Book excerpt: In a domed granite chamber deep beneath the Giza Plateau, a proto-pyramidical beacon pulses a warning into the cosmos for millennia while dark spectral forces conspire to terminate the signal by removing its infinite power, the golden ellipse. * * * In 1944, a German spy unwittingly looted the golden ellipse, but in the fog of world war, it ended up in the hands of a brash American fighter pilot who buried the prized contraband in the desert before his paranormal demise on a daring air raid in the south of France. * * * In 2044, a young couple fresh off a space tourism touchdown in Toulouse is hijacked from their honeymoon onto a heart-pounding odyssey to locate the legendary gold relic and restart the beacon’s signal before time runs out. It’s just the fate of the world. No pressure. Book One in THE POWERS THAT BE trilogy, THE GOLDEN ELLIPSE, is an epic sci-fi action adventure introducing Rachel and Owen Haig—intrepid newlyweds in a tech-driven near-future world of 2044 replete with AI and humanoid replicants. Their perilous quest culminates in a harrowing pitch-black descent beneath the Giza Plateau, where fates collide as alien invaders tear open Earth’s skies. Drawing parallels between the Great Pyramid's mysterious origin and Fermi's paradox, The Golden Ellipse is an epoch-spanning story rich in history and paranormal intrigue with an eclectic cast of 3-dimensional characters, gritty dialogue, dark humor, and a clandestine organization known simply as The Powers That Be, chartered to foster humankind's destiny in a crowded universe. Includes an excerpt from THE LOST SHIP The Powers That Be Book Two

Book Cat People Human Cat Interrelatedness in the Cat Fancy

Download or read book Cat People Human Cat Interrelatedness in the Cat Fancy written by Emily Stone and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-07-31 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the social world of the cat fancy, or the leisure activity of breeding and exhibiting pedigree cats. Based on multispecies ethnographic fieldwork and interviews in the United Kingdom, it explores the process and performance of exhibiting cats at shows, the breeding practices and discourses integral to the creation of pedigree breeds, and the relations that these practices generate between human guardians, the pedigree cat population, and non-pedigree cats. Through observation with cat fanciers and their interactions with their cats, the author investigates the social dynamics and relationships that form within the fancy, considering the interconnections between biopower and eugenics in pedigree breeding, the practices of pet keeping and the complexities of more-than-human care, and the implications of involvement for the cats themselves. As such, Cat People: Human–Cat Interrelatedness in the Cat Fancy will appeal to scholars from across the social sciences and humanities interested in human–animal interactions, multispecies leisure, anthrozoology, and more-than-human care.

Book Analyzing the Marvel Universe

Download or read book Analyzing the Marvel Universe written by Douglas Brode and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2024-10-30 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marvel, like other media "universes," is a collection of highly profitable and audience-satisfying products that exist not only as individual items of popular culture but coalesce to form a unique and all-encompassing identity. Within media studies, elements of popular culture once dismissed as low-brow entertainment are now studied with the seriousness that has always been afforded classics like Shakespeare's plays and ancient myth. Indeed, DC and Marvel might be thought of as competing myth systems. This book is a collection of diverse essays covering all aspects of the Marvel Universe, from in-print graphic novels to film and television variations. Contributors present in-depth, original and inclusive interpretations of numerous individual elements of Marvel, including analysis of key characters, themes and aesthetic elements. They also offer a vision of the essential "meaning" of Marvel, including aspects that set it apart from the DC Universe and other media. Individual readings apply feminist, ethnic, and queer theory, among others, and deal with the lesser known aspects of Marvel's offerings in order to provide the definitive collection on this subject. Beginning with an introduction by the editor that provides a complete overview of the Marvel canon, this book offers the broadest and most in-depth collection on the subject to date.

Book Other Rivers

    Book Details:
  • Author : Peter Hessler
  • Publisher : Penguin
  • Release : 2024-07-09
  • ISBN : 0593655346
  • Pages : 327 pages

Download or read book Other Rivers written by Peter Hessler and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2024-07-09 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An intimate and revelatory account of two generations of students in China’s heartland, by an author who has observed the country’s tumultuous changes over the past quarter century More than two decades after teaching English during the early part of China’s economic boom, an experience chronicled in his book River Town, Peter Hessler returned to Sichuan Province to instruct students from the next generation. At the same time, Hessler and his wife enrolled their twin daughters in a local state-run elementary school, where they were the only Westerners. Over the years, Hessler had kept in close contact with many of the people he had taught in the 1990s. By reconnecting with these individuals—members of China’s “Reform generation,” now in their forties—while teaching current undergrads, Hessler gained a unique perspective on China’s incredible transformation. In 1996, when Hessler arrived in China, almost all of the people in his classroom were first-generation college students. They typically came from large rural families, and their parents, subsistence farmers, could offer little guidance as their children entered a brand-new world. By 2019, when Hessler arrived at Sichuan University, he found a very different China, as well as a new kind of student—an only child whose schooling was the object of intense focus from a much more ambitious cohort of parents. At Sichuan University, many young people had a sense of irony about the regime but mostly navigated its restrictions with equanimity, embracing the opportunities of China’s rise. But the pressures of extreme competition at scale can be grueling, even for much younger children—including Hessler’s own daughters, who gave him an intimate view into the experience at their local school. In Peter Hessler’s hands, China’s education system is the perfect vehicle for examining the country’s past, present, and future, and what we can learn from it, for good and ill. At a time when anti-Chinese rhetoric in America has grown blunt and ugly, Other Rivers is a tremendous, essential gift, a work of enormous empathy that rejects cheap stereotypes and shows us China from the inside out and the bottom up. As both a window onto China and a mirror onto America, Other Rivers is a classic from a master of the form.
