This book was released on 2011 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Search for the Legacy of the USPHS Syphilis Study at Tuskegee is a collection of essays that seeks to redefine the "legacy" of the infamous Tuskegee Syphilis Study in light of recent findings from other scientific studies that challenge the long-standing, widely-held understanding of the study. These essays are written with thoughtful attention to fully integrate the essayists' perspectives on the impact of the study on the lives of Americans today and place the legacy of the study within the evolving picture of racial and ethnic relations in the United States. Each essayist looks through his or her own personal and professional prism to give an account of what constitutes that legacy today. Contributors include the two leading historians of the Tuskeegee Syphilis Study and two former Surgeons General of the United States as well as other prominent scholars from the fields of public health, bioethics, psychology, biostatistics, medicine, dentistry, journalism, medical sociology, medical anthropology, and health disparities research.

Now the Bible is my ultimate appeal in all matters of faith and practice, and it is to this test I am anxious to bring the subject at issue between us. Let us then begin with Adam and examine the charter of privileges which was given to him. "Have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth."

Download or read book The Life and Afterlife of Gay Neighborhoods written by Alex Bitterman and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-19 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book examines the significance of gay neighborhoods (or ‘gayborhoods’) from critical periods of formation during the gay liberation and freedom movements of the 1960s and 1970s, to proven durability through the HIV/AIDS pandemic during the 1980s and 1990s, to a mature plateau since 2000. The book provides a framework for contemplating the future form and function of gay neighborhoods. Social and cultural shifts within gay neighborhoods are used as a framework for understanding the decades-long struggle for LGBTQ+ rights and equality. Resulting from gentrification, weakening social stigma, and enhanced rights for LGBTQ+ people, gay neighborhoods have recently become “less gay,” following a 50-year period of resilience. Meanwhile, other neighborhoods are becoming “more gay,” due to changing preferences of LGBTQ+ individuals and a propensity for LGBTQ+ families to form community in areas away from established gayborhoods. The current ‘plateau’ in the evolution of gay neighborhoods is characterized by generational differences—between Baby Boom pioneers and Millennials who favour broad inclusivity—signaling various possible trajectories for the future ‘afterlife’ of these important LGBTQ+ urban spaces. The complicating impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic provides a point of comparison for lessons learned from gay neighborhoods and the LGBTQ+ community that bravely endured the onset of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. This book will be of interest to students and scholars in various disciplines—including sociology, social work, anthropology, gender and sexuality, LGTBQ+ and queer studies, as well as urban geography, architecture, and city planning—and to policymakers and advocates concerned with LGBTQ+ rights and social justice.

Download or read book A Year in the Woods written by Torbjørn Ekelund and published by Greystone Books Ltd. This book was released on 2021-10-12 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the acclaimed author of In Praise of Paths comes a humorous and modest Walden for modern times. As nature becomes ever more precious, we all want to spend more time appreciating it. But time is often hard to come by. And how do we appreciate nature without disruption? In this sensitively-written book, Torbjørn Ekelund, an acclaimed Norwegian nature writer, shares a creative and non-intrusive method for immersing oneself in nature. And the result is nothing short of transformative. Evoking Henry David Thoreau and the four-season structure of Walden, Ekelund writes about communing with nature by repeating a small, simple ritual and engaging in quiet reflection. At the start of the book, he hatches a plan: to leave the city after work one day per month, camp near the same tiny pond in the forest, and return to work the next day. He keeps this up for a year. His ritual is far from rigorous and it is never perfect. One evening, he grows so cold in his tent that he hikes out before daybreak. But as Ekelund inevitably greets the same trees and boulders each month, he appreciates the banality of their sameness alongside their quiet beauty. He wonders how long they have stood silently in this place—and reflects on his own short existence among them. A Year in the Woods asks us to reconsider our relationship with the natural world. Are we anxious wanderers or mindful observers? Do we honor the seasons or let them pass us by? At once beautifully written, accessible, and engaging, A Year in the Woods is the perfect book for anyone who longs for a deeper connection with their environment, but is realistic about time and ambition.

Download or read book Operation written by Margaret Kay and published by Sisters Romance. This book was released on 2021-07-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Michaela 'Tech Goddess' Karras went to work for Shepherd Security, she closed the door on her past life and everyone in it. It is a life that haunts her, a past she has kept secret from most. She was a loner, a natural beauty who hid behind a standoffish tomboy persona. She kept to herself until Angel joined the agency and they became close friends. Her circle at the agency grew over the years and she now has a life she loves, a life she never dreamed possible before joining Shepherd Security. And that is all thanks to Sam 'Big Bear' Shepherd. He knows her past. He saved her from it. He is one of the few people that Michaela trusts. Landon 'Lambchop' Johnson, one of Shepherd's men, is another. They became friends. For years, he accepted her insistence that they would remain just friends, even though Michaela knew he had stronger feelings for her. That changed when a group trip put them together on a romantic beach where the fact that their relationship had deepened could no longer be ignored. When her past invades her present, she realizes she must confront her ghosts so they will not threaten her future with Landon. But as the team mental health professional, Joe Lassiter, has warned her, old patterns of coping are easy to fall back into. Michaela finds herself alone and in trouble. She knows Landon and Shepherd can help her, but that help will require that she have the most trust she has ever had in another. But the question is, will they trust her again when it's over? She's not so sure. Shepherd Security recruits only the best. They can protect someone in trouble like no other because they work in the shadows, invisible, and outside the system where the rules don't apply-just the oath they took. They don't exist. That's also why they can break any suspect and can get answers out of anyone accused. That's when they're called in, when someone must be protected at all costs, or when answers must be obtained, by any means necessary. Warning, this story is realistic, with adult language and content on the way to the HEA. This is book 10 in the Shepherd Security Series. Even though the story does continue from book to book, each is a stand-alone story except for this installment of the series. Book #8, Operation Beach Angel, and Book #9, Operation Healing Angel should be read before this book to fully understand the story in this book. Overall, the entire series is best enjoyed in order.
