Download or read book Integration of Electric Vehicles and Battery Storage Systems written by Hrvoje Pandžić and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-04-22 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Achieving the goal of green and environmentally friendly energy systems is not possible without the concept of energy storage. Such storage should charge when renewable generation, e.g., photovoltaics and wind farms, is abundant and discharge during periods of its scarcity. Although pumped hydropower plants have been widely used as extremely large capacity energy storage, the recent technological developments in lithium-based batteries have made them economically feasible. The major advantages of batteries over a conventional energy storage system, i.e., hydropower, include its modularity and ease of integration with the transport system. This Special Issue is thus focused on both stationary batteries and mobile batteries in electric vehicles. Both should be used to provide flexibility and balancing services to power systems. While stationary batteries are focused solely on the power system, the batteries within electric vehicles need to primarily fulfill the task of providing energy for transportation. This is why their use in power systems is secondary. However, due to generally long parking periods, they can become a detrimental asset in terms of balancing the power system.

Download or read book Bridging the Gap written by Grazia Brunetta and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-06-10 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of resilience has arisen as a “new way of thinking”, becoming a response to both the causes and effects of ongoing global challenges. As it strongly stresses cities’ transformative potential, resilience’s final purpose is to prevent and manage unforeseen events and improve communities’ environmental and social quality. Although the resilience theory has been investigated in depth, several methodological challenges remain, mainly related to the concept’s practical sphere. As a matter of fact, resilience is commonly criticised for being too ambiguous and empty of meaning. At the same time, turning resilience into practice is not easy to do. This will arguably be one of the most impactful global issues for future research on resilience. The Special Issue “Bridging the Gap: The Measure of Urban Resilience” falls under this heading, and it seeks to synthesise state-of-the-art knowledge of theories and practices on measuring resilience. The Special Issue collected 11 papers that address the following questions: “What are the theoretical perspectives of measuring urban resilience? What are the existing methods for measuring urban resilience? What are the main features that a technique for measuring urban resilience needs to have? What is the role of measuring urban resilience in operationalising cities’ ability to adapt, recover and benefit from shocks?”

Download or read book Smart Robust Operation and Trading of Integrated Energy Systems with Low Pollution Goals written by Kaiping Qu and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-09-23 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To mitigate two major environmental concerns of global warming and air pollution, renewable energies with uncertainty are increasingly deployed in power systems, which challenge the system's secure operation. A single system usually has limited adjusting ability. In contrast, integrated energy systems such as electricity-gas, electricity-traffic, electricity-heat, and transmission-distribution coordinated systems enhance the regulating ability of renewable energy accommodation and environmental protection. The operation of integrated energy systems will meet three essential requirements: low-pollution attribute, robustness, and cooperativity. However, the diversity of uncertainty conditions, the complementarity of new energy accommodation among systems, the conflict of interest between systems, and the dispatch autonomy of systems challenge the requirements mentioned above. The main goal of this Research Topic includes: 1. Propose more effective trading mechanisms or control strategies for carbon and air pollutant emissions. 2. Fully use complementary effects between electric power, natural gas, heat, hydrogen, and traffic systems. 3. Realize the coordinated operation of integrated energy systems with limited information interaction and ensured dispatch autonomy. 4. Improve the robustness of integrated energy systems under diversified uncertainty conditions. 5. Apply data-based reinforcement learning methods for the dynamic decision of smart integrated energy systems under complex environments.
