Book 2015 Discard Estimation Precision and Sample Size Analyses for 14 Federally Managed Species Groups in the Waters Off the Northeastern United States

Download or read book 2015 Discard Estimation Precision and Sample Size Analyses for 14 Federally Managed Species Groups in the Waters Off the Northeastern United States written by Susan E. Wigley and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This report describes the analyses associated with the discard estimation of 14 federally managed fish and invertebrate species groups during the July 2013 through June 2014 time period and the expected coverage needed by at-sea observers for northeastern US fisheries for the April 2015 through March 2016 period using the Standardized Bycatch Reporting Methodology. An estimated 64,795 mt (142,848,902 lb) of federally regulated species were discarded during the July 2013 through June 2014 time period. The predominant species groups discarded are skates (Rajidae) and spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias). Across all species groups examined, 'No Market' is the reason reported for the majority of discards. Analyses also revealed that observer coverage within a fleet corresponded with the spatial and temporal patterns of fishing activity in terms of kept weight of all species for fleets with observer coverage. The discards reported in this document may not necessarily correspond directly with the discard estimates derived for individual stock assessments because of differences in stratification and data. Hence, the discard estimates are not definitive, but indicative of where discarding is occurring among commercial fleets and for which species groups. The sea days needed to achieve a precision-based performance standard (30% coefficient of variation of the discard estimate) were estimated to be 11,204 sea days for the 14 fish and invertebrate species groups across 56 fleets. The sea day analyses used a standardized protocol to account for the importance of the discarded species relative to the amount of discards by a fleet and total fishing mortality"--Executive Summary. This book was released on 2012 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This report describes the analysis of the expected coverage needed by at-sea observers for Northeast fisheries for the April 2012 through March 2013 period using the Standardized Bycatch Reporting Methodology. Refinements to the procedure for filtering the needed sea days have been made based on analyses conducted for the 2011 3-year Review Report. The sea days needed to achieve the precision-based performance standard (30% coefficient of variation of the discard estimate) were updated using July 2010 through June 2011 data. To monitor 14 federally managed fish and invertebrate species groups across 55 fleets, a total of 18,822 sea days are needed. The discards reported in this document may not necessarily correspond directly with the discard estimates derived for individual stock assessments due to differences in stratification and data. Hence, the discard estimates are not definitive, but indicative of where discarding is occurring among commercial fleets and for which species groups. Based upon this analysis, the predominant species groups discarded are skates and dogfish. Across all species groups examined, "No Market" is the reason reported for the majority of discards"--Executive summary.

Book Discards in the World s Marine Fisheries

Download or read book Discards in the World s Marine Fisheries written by Kieran Kelleher and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2005 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication gives an updated review of the quantity of discards in the world's marine fisheries, using information from a broad range of fisheries in all continents. A number of policy issues are discussed including a 'no discards' approach to fisheries management, the need for balance between bycatch reduction and bycatch utilisation initiatives, and concerns arising from incidental catches of marine mammals, birds and reptiles. The report also highlights the need for more robust methods of estimating discards, and the development of bycatch management plans.

Book A Brief Description of the Discard Estimation for the National Bycatch Report

Download or read book A Brief Description of the Discard Estimation for the National Bycatch Report written by Susan E. Wigley and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "NOAA Fisheries is currently preparing a National Bycatch Report summarizing estimates of discards, by species, which occurred in 2005 in all federally managed fisheries in the United States. This document briefly describes the methods used to estimate the discards of finfish and shellfish in 2005 in fisheries in the Northeast Region, which will be included in the National Bycatch Report. The regional analysis involved 33 species and 77 fleets. Stock components were not considered in the analyses, and only fleets for which discard estimates could actually be derived will be included in the National Bycatch Report. The discard estimation process used a stratification approach broad enough to encompass all species, and employed a combined ratio method using a discard-to-kept weight ratio. The discard estimates derived will not necessarily directly correspond with those contained in individual stock assessments due to differences in stratification and estimation methods. However, the various estimates should be of the same order of magnitude"--Introduction.

Book excerpt: Fifteen years in the making, this updated edition raises the high standard of Bigelow and Schroeder's 1953 reference by drawing from a much larger base of information. Thirty-eight experts in fisheries biology and ichthyology clearly distill the enormous amount of knowledge gained during the past fifty years, including distribution figures from thirty years of annual trawl surveys; food habit accounts from surveys of the stomach contents of more than 30,000 fishes; and egg distribution data from a survey exceeding 10,000 samples. The contributors update Bigelow and Schroeder's 1953 material while presenting a wealth of new information, including thirty-three additional species accounts. By adding fifty percent more material and focusing the volume on data, the editors address the needs of today's biologists, the commercial fishing industry, and marine enthusiasts, and ensure that Bigelow and Schroeder's Fishes of the Gulf of Maine, Third Edition, will become the standard work in the field for the next fifty years.

Book Review of the Marine Recreational Information Program

Download or read book Review of the Marine Recreational Information Program written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-08-24 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is responsible for collecting information on marine recreational angling. It does so principally through the Marine Recreational Information Program (MRIP), a survey program that consists of an in-person survey at fishing access sites and a mail survey, in addition to other complementary or alternative surveys. Data collected from anglers through MRIP supply fisheries managers with essential information for assessing fish stocks. In 2006, the National Research Council provided an evaluation of MRIP's predecessor, the Marine Recreational Fisheries Statistics Survey (MRFSS). That review, Review of Recreational Fisheries Survey Methods, presented conclusions and recommendations in six categories: sampling issues; statistical estimation issues; human dimensions; program management and support; communication and outreach; and general recommendations. After spending nearly a decade addressing the recommendations, NMFS requested another evaluation of its modified survey program (MRIP). This report, the result of that evaluation, serves as a 10-year progress report. It recognizes the progress that NMFS has made, including major improvements in the statistical soundness of its survey designs, and also highlights some remaining challenges and provides recommendations for addressing them.

Book Pain Management and the Opioid Epidemic

Download or read book Pain Management and the Opioid Epidemic written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-09-28 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drug overdose, driven largely by overdose related to the use of opioids, is now the leading cause of unintentional injury death in the United States. The ongoing opioid crisis lies at the intersection of two public health challenges: reducing the burden of suffering from pain and containing the rising toll of the harms that can arise from the use of opioid medications. Chronic pain and opioid use disorder both represent complex human conditions affecting millions of Americans and causing untold disability and loss of function. In the context of the growing opioid problem, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) launched an Opioids Action Plan in early 2016. As part of this plan, the FDA asked the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to convene a committee to update the state of the science on pain research, care, and education and to identify actions the FDA and others can take to respond to the opioid epidemic, with a particular focus on informing FDA's development of a formal method for incorporating individual and societal considerations into its risk-benefit framework for opioid approval and monitoring.

Download or read book World Wildlife Crime Report 2020 written by United Nations Publications and published by UN. This book was released on 2021-03-31 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report presents the latest assessment of global trends in wildlife crime. It includes discussions on illicit rosewood, ivory, rhino horn, pangolin scales, live reptiles, tigers and other big cats, and European eel. The COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic has highlighted that wildlife crime is a threat not only to the environment and biodiversity, but also to human health, economic development and security. Zoonotic diseases - those caused by pathogens that spread from animals to humans - represent up to 75% of all emerging infectious diseases. Trafficked wild species and the resulting products offered for human consumption, by definition, escape any hygiene or sanitary control, and therefore pose even greater risks of infection.
