This book was released on 2015 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This report provides an evaluation of the economic and social performance of active limited access Northeast groundfish vessels for the 2013 fishing year (May 2013 through April 2014). Table 1 contains a summary of major trends for the fishery for the period 2010 - 2013. The report focuses on trends from 2010 onward and on changes that occurred between 2012 and 2013. An important difference in this year's report from previous reports is that all monetary metrics are presented in constant dollars that have been adjusted for inflation, using 2010 as the base year, rather than in nominal terms. Revenue and price metrics for the 2013 fishing year in Table 1 , Table 2 , and Table 3 have been presented in nominal terms (in addition to real, or constant, terms)"--Executive summary.

Book 2010 Final Report on the Performance of the Northeast Multispecies Groundfish Fishery May 2010 April 2011

Download or read book 2010 Final Report on the Performance of the Northeast Multispecies Groundfish Fishery May 2010 April 2011 written by Andrew Kitts and published by . This book was released on 2011-10-27 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report provides an evaluation of the economic and social performance of active limited access Northeast groundfish vessels for the 2010 fishing year (May 2010 through April 2011) and provides additional analyses to those contained in the Report for Fishing Year 2010 on the Performance of the Northeast Multispecies (Groundfish) Fishery (May 2010 April 2011) (Kitts et al. 2011). The additional analyses in this report are: (1) inclusion of vessel and sector costs in an evaluation of nominal net revenue change; (2) incorporation of new vessel ownership information; (3) more revenue distribution metrics; (4) a measure of vessel productivity; (5) an evaluation of Annual Catch Entitlement trading; and (6) a qualitative discussion of potential changes in the number of crew and other jobs. These new analyses revealed some notable changes in the fishery between 2007 and 2010; some of these are recent, while others reflect ongoing trends. Three clear changes were evident in 2010 compared with the 2007, 2008 and 2009 fishing years. Combined yearly average nominal prices for all species were higher in 2010 than any other year in the time series. Even though groundfish gross nominal revenues continued to decline in 2010, higher nominal prices resulted in 2010 gross nominal revenues from all species landed being higher than in 2008 or 2009, and nearly equal to 2007. Economic performance, as indicated by gross nominal revenue per unit effort and vessel owners' share of nominal net revenue per day, improved in 2010. Tables and figures. This is a print on demand report.

Book Biology and Ecology of Atlantic Cod

Download or read book Biology and Ecology of Atlantic Cod written by Nataliia Kulatska and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-10-31 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atlantic cod is an important fish species in human history and continues to be a major influence on North Atlantic fisheries management, as stock collapses and recoveries impact coastal communities and shelf sea food webs. This book provides an overview of Atlantic cod biology and ecology, focussing on regional differences in life-history and stock dynamics that affect productivity and the challenges faced by management. By comparing the success of management approaches and the local influence of changing climate and food webs, the book highlights the different pressures facing stocks and identifies knowledge gaps across the species’ range.

Book Human Ecodynamics in the North Atlantic

Download or read book Human Ecodynamics in the North Atlantic written by Ramona Harrison and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2014-10-08 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Human Ecodynamics in the North Atlantic: A Collaborative Model of Humans and Nature through Space and Time, Ramona Harrison and Ruth A. Maherhave compiled a series of separate research projects conducted across the North Atlantic region that each contribute greatly to anthropological archaeology. This book assembles a regional model through which the reader is presented with a vivid and detailed image of the climatic events and cultures which have occupied these seas and lands for roughly a 5000-year period. It provides a model of adaptability, resilience, and sustainability that can be applied globally. First, visiting the Northern Isles of Scotland in the Orkney Islands, the reader is taken through the archaeology from the Neolithic Period through World War II in the face of sea-level rise and rapidly eroding coastlines. The Shetland Islands then reveal a deep-time study of one large-scale Iron Age excavation. On to the northern coasts of Norway, where information about late medieval maritime peoples is explained. Iceland explores human–environment interaction and implications of climate change presented from the Viking Age through the Early Modern Era. Rounding out the North Atlantic Region is Greenland, which sheds light on the Norse in the late Viking Age and the Middle Ages.

Book Innovations in Fishing Technology Aimed at Achieving Sustainable Fishing

Download or read book Innovations in Fishing Technology Aimed at Achieving Sustainable Fishing written by Alessandro Lucchetti and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-11-20 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last fifty years, human exploitation of marine resources has become more efficient as the understanding of the habits and behaviour of the various species available in the sea gradually increased. Thus, technologies have developed naturally over time and fishing gears and practices have become more sophisticated. These technical advances in fishing gear have generally led to more efficient economic fishing operations and better access to resources. However, fishing implies the harvesting of marine organisms directly from their natural environment, therefore general awareness of environmental problems due to the exploitation of fishery resources has also increased. In particular, the poor selectivity of some gears is responsible for the capture of juveniles, immature and undersized specimens of many species, with negative consequences on the state of stocks. In addition, bycatch in marine fisheries is a major source of human-caused mortality of marine megafauna, often leading to the capture of vulnerable species. Finally, many bottom-towed gears are responsible for high impacts on bottom communities and habitats, with cascading consequences on the entire marine ecosystem. All these impacts can lead to changes in the structure, function and integrity of ecosystems, including effects on the food webs and multispecies predator-prey relationships.
