Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book emphasizes the interdisciplinary interaction in problems involving geometry and partial differential equations. It provides an attempt to follow certain threads that interconnect various approaches in the geometric applications and influence of partial differential equations. A few such approaches include: Morse-Palais-Smale theory in global variational calculus, general methods to obtain conservation laws for PDEs, structural investigation for the understanding of the meaning of quantum geometry in PDEs, extensions to super PDEs (formulated in the category of supermanifolds) of the geometrical methods just introduced for PDEs and the harmonic theory which proved to be very important especially after the appearance of the Atiyah-Singer index theorem, which provides a link between geometry and topology.

Book Eco efficient Materials for Mitigating Building Cooling Needs

Download or read book Eco efficient Materials for Mitigating Building Cooling Needs written by F. Pacheco-Torgal and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2015-02-27 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change is one of the most important environmental problems faced by Planet Earth. The majority of CO2 emissions come from burning fossil fuels for energy production and improvements in energy efficiency shows the greatest potential for any single strategy to abate global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the energy sector. Energy related emissions account for almost 80% of the EU's total greenhouse gas emissions. The building sector is the largest energy user responsible for about 40% of the EU's total final energy consumption. In Europe the number of installed air conditioning systems has increased 500% over the last 20 years, but in that same period energy cooling needs have increased more than 20 times. The increase in energy cooling needs relates to the current higher living and working standards. In urban environments with low outdoor air quality (the general case) this means that in summer-time one cannot count on natural ventilation to reduce cooling needs. Do not forget the synergistic effect between heat waves and air pollution which means that outdoor air quality is worse in the summer aggravating cooling needs. Over the next few years this phenomenon will become much worse because more people will live in cities, more than 2 billion by 2050 and global warming will aggravate cooling needs. - An overview of materials to lessen the impact of urban heat islands - Excellent coverage of building materials to reduce air condtioning needs - Innovative products discussed such as Thermo and Electrochromic materials

Book Complex Analytic Methods for Partial Differential Equations

Download or read book Complex Analytic Methods for Partial Differential Equations written by Heinrich G. W. Begehr and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1994 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an introductory text for beginners who have a basic knowledge of complex analysis, functional analysis and partial differential equations. Riemann and Riemann-Hilbert boundary value problems are discussed for analytic functions, for inhomogeneous Cauchy-Riemann systems as well as for generalized Beltrami systems. Related problems such as the Poincar‚ problem, pseudoparabolic systems and complex elliptic second order equations are also considered. Estimates for solutions to linear equations existence and uniqueness results are thus available for related nonlinear problems; the method is explained by constructing entire solutions to nonlinear Beltrami equations. Often problems are discussed just for the unit disc but more general domains, even of multiply connectivity, are involved.

Book Fields Medallists Lectures

Download or read book Fields Medallists Lectures written by Michael Atiyah and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1997-10-13 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the Fields Medal does not have the same public recognition as the Nobel Prizes, they share a similar intellectual standing. It is restricted to one field - that of mathematics - and an age limit of 40 has become an accepted tradition. Mathematics has in the main been interpreted as pure mathematics, and this is not so unreasonable since major contributions in some applied areas can be (and have been) recognized with Nobel Prizes. The restriction to 40 years is of marginal significance, since most mathematicians have made their mark long before this age.A list of Fields Medallists and their contributions provides a bird's eye view of mathematics over the past 60 years. It highlights the areas in which, at various times, greatest progress has been made. This volume does not pretend to be comprehensive, nor is it a historical document. On the other hand, it presents contributions from 22 Fields Medallists and so provides a highly interesting and varied picture. The contributions themselves represent the choice of the individual Medallists. In some cases the articles relate directly to the work for which the Fields Medals were awarded. In other cases new articles have been produced which relate to more current interests of the Medallists. This indicates that while Fields Medallists must be under 40 at the time of the award, their mathematical development goes well past this age. In fact the age limit of 40 was chosen so that young mathematicians would be encouraged in their future work. The Fields Medallists' Lectures is now available on CD-ROM. Sections can be accessed at the touch of a button, and similar topics grouped together using advanced keyword searches.

  • Release : 1996-06-30
  • ISBN : 9780792338215
  • Pages : 586 pages

Download or read book Tropical Animal Health written by H.S.H Seifert and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1996-06-30 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, Tropical Animal Health, describes the problems of animal diseases in the tropics, in the tropical environment, and in relation to particular production systems. In Part I, those basic scientific facts of the special host defence mechanism and of the host-pathogen relationship in the tropics, which hardly play any part in animal husbandry in temperate climates, are explained. Of special importance are the resistance mechanisms of autochthonous breeds and in contrast to them, the high susceptibility of exotic breeds in the tropics. It is explained how immuno- and chemoprophylaxis can be used as instruments for animal health measures if they are adapted to the socio-economic and ecological conditions of both the tropics and developing countries. Scientific details of immunology are presented as far as they are necessary to understand the epizo otiology of tropical diseases and diagnostic techniques for recognizing tropical diseases as well as the execution of prophylactic measures. Vector-borne diseases are the disease complexes most difficult to control since they are bound to the tropical environment, thanks to the biology of their vectors. Therefore, a special chapter has been dedicated to the description of biology and eradication of vectors of vector-borne diseases. The extent of the description varies according to the importance of the specific vector. The acaricides, insecticides and alternative methods used to control vectors are dis cussed in detail. The author has tried to present a world-wide picture, but it is not possible to cover every aspect completely.

Book Random Walks Of Infinitely Many Particles

Download or read book Random Walks Of Infinitely Many Particles written by Pal Revesz and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1994-09-12 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author's previous book, Random Walk in Random and Non-Random Environments, was devoted to the investigation of the Brownian motion of a simple particle. The present book studies the independent motions of infinitely many particles in the d-dimensional Euclidean space Rd. In Part I the particles at time t = 0 are distributed in Rd according to the law of a given random field and they execute independent random walks. Part II is devoted to branching random walks, i.e. to the case where the particles execute random motions and birth and death processes independently. Finally, in Part III, functional laws of iterated logarithms are proved for the cases of independent motions and branching processes.
