Download or read book The Secret Doorway written by Paul Hutchins and published by Imagination Publishing. This book was released on 2008-11 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pictorial drama of the creation of Heaven and Earth based upon the awe-inspiring photo images from the Hubble and Spitzer space telescopes. Author, Paul Hutchins uncovers a grand drama on a universal scale that has been playing out since the invention of the telescope. He poses the question, is this grand drama merely in response to an ancient invitation recorded in the Book of Isaiah? It states in Isaiah 40:26, ""Look up into the heavens."" Who created all the stars? Through the use of his imagination and the invention of the telescope, man has discovered a once secret doorway to a world beyond imagination. He has now, in this age of cutting edge technology developed flying space telescopes in his quest to know, how did we get here? What he has found has astounded him. Hutchins farther poses the question; if it took over 400 years of man’s imagination from when the telescope was invented, and countless other inventions including the Hubble and Spitzer space telescopes, to merely take photo images of the universe, then who’s imagination is responsible for the reality those photo images represent? As we peer through this doorway to the heavens and look upon these heavenly cosmic bodies, we find ourselves awed by their grandeur. The pressing question becomes too large to ignore. Who is responsible for all these things? Could it be that we are now peering into the mind of a supreme architect with an imagination far beyond that of mere mortals? Could we be peering into the mind of imagination supreme? Could it be that we have been brought to this point in history unbeknownst to ourselves and given this technology by the one who extended that ancient invitation recorded by Isaiah 2700 years ago?

Download or read book Zora Neale Hurston written by Deborah G. Plant and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2007-08-30 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new biography takes into account the whole woman—not just the prolific author of such great works as Their Eyes Were Watching God , Moses, Man of the Mountain, Jonah's Gourd Vine, Mules and Men, as well as essays, folklore, short stories, and poetry—but the philosopher and the spiritual soul, examining how each is reflected in her career, fiction and nonfiction publications, social and political activity, and, ultimately, her death. When we ask what animated the woman who achieved all that she did, we must necessarily probe further. Not one of the other existing biographies discusses or analyzes Hurston's spirituality in any sustained sense, even though this spirituality played a significant role in her life and works. As author Deborah G. Plant shows, Zora Neale Hurston's ability to achieve and to endure all she did came from the courage of her convictions—a belief in self that was profoundly centered and anchored in spirituality.

Book excerpt: Best known for his popular crime fiction, Boston novelist George V. Higgins (1939-1999) should stand among the top ranks of the American literary canon. In his 26 novels and dozens of short stories, Higgins chronicled the lives of Boston's Irish with his trademark hard-boiled dialog, exploring the criminal underworld, American democracy, Boston politics, personal redemption and New England life in the tradition of Hawthorne and Thoreau. This intimate biography explores his turbulent life and career, including his working-class Irish Catholic roots, his two stormy marriages, his ambivalence toward the city of his birth, his passion for the limelight, and his drinking, which disrupted his family life and led to his early death at age 59. Discussions of Higgins's individual works and excerpts from his correspondence, writings, and thoughts on literature complete this revealing portrait.

Download or read book The Fatal Gift of Beauty written by Nina Burleigh and published by Crown. This book was released on 2012-07-10 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Award-winning author and journalist Nina Burleigh’s mesmerizing literary investigation of the murder of Meredith Kercher, the controversial prosecution, the conviction and twenty-six-year sentence of Amanda Knox, the machinations of Italian justice, and the underground depravity and clash of cultures in one of central Italy’s most beloved cities. The sexually violent murder of twenty-one-year-old British student Meredith Kercher in Perugia, Italy, on the night of November 1, 2007, became an international sensation when one of Kercher’s housemates, twenty-year-old Seattle native Amanda Knox, as well as her Italian boyfriend and a troubled local man Knox said she “vaguely” knew, was arrested and charged with the murder. When Perugia authorities concluded that the murder was part of a dark, twisted rite—a “sex game”—led by the American with an uncanny resemblance to Perugia’s Madonna, they unleashed a media frenzy from Rome to London to New York and Seattle. The story drew an international cult obsessed with “Foxy Knoxy,” a pretty honor student on a junior year abroad, who either woke up one morning into a nightmare of superstition and misogyny—the dark side of Italy—or participated in something unspeakable. The investigation begins in the old stone cottage overlooking bucolic olive groves where Kercher’s body was found in her locked bedroom. It winds through the shadowy, arched alleys of Perugia, a city of art that is also a magnet for tens of thousands of students who frequent its bars, clubs, and drug bazaar on the steps of the Duomo. It climaxes in an up-close account of Italy’s dysfunctional legal system, as the trial slowly unfolds at the town’s Tribunale, and the prosecution’s thunderous final appeal to God before the quivering girl defendant resembles a scene from the Inquisition. To reveal what actually happened on that terrible night after Halloween, Nina Burleigh lived in Perugia, attended the trial, and corresponded with the incarcerated defendants. She also delved deeply into the history, secrets, and customs of Perugia, renowned equally for its Etruscan tunnels, early Christian art, medieval sorcerers, and pagan roots. A New York Times bestseller, The Fatal Gift of Beauty is the thoughtful, compelling examination of an enduring mystery, an ancient, storied place, and a disquieting facet of Italian culture: an obsession with female eroticism. By including the real story of Rudy Guede, it is also an acute window into the minds and personalities of the accused killers and of the conservative Italian magistrate striving to make sense of an inexplicable act of evil. But at its core is an indelible portrait of Amanda Knox, the strangely childlike, enigmatic beauty, whose photogenic face became the focal point of international speculation about the shadow side of youth and freedom.
