Book The gestating and lactating sow

Download or read book The gestating and lactating sow written by Chantal Farmer and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-09-04 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last book on the lactating sow was published over 15 years ago. This new book brings us up to date in current knowledge on the gestating and lactating sow. It covers new and important topics such as conditioning of gilts for optimal reproductive performance, feeding high fibre diets to gestating sows and providing various fat sources in gestation and lactation. It also describes the several key success factors to group-housing systems in gestation, which is a must due to the current move towards group-housing. The new concept of transition feeding for sows is discussed, as well as the factors involved in mammary development of gilts and sows, both of which are instrumental for maximum colostrum and/or milk yields. The impact of the human-animal interactions on sow welfare and performance is discussed with focus on new handling practices that could be developed to overbalance the negative interactions inherent to pig management systems. Updates on must-have topics, such as amino acid and energy requirements of sows, colostrum and milk yield and composition, and sow health are also provided. The subjects covered in this book will assist animal scientists, nutritionists, veterinarians and swine producers in learning the most recent information on relevant and current topics affecting sow production, and in knowing which areas are in need of further research efforts.

Book Antimicrobial growth promoters

Download or read book Antimicrobial growth promoters written by D. Barug and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It is widely acknowledged that the inclusion of antimicrobial growth promoters (AGPs) in the diet of livestock increases growth rate. However, many questions arise on whether the benefits outweigh the risks, or vice versa. Recent legislative developments in the European Union and USA, recommendations by the World Health Organization, initiatives taken by the food chain, and consumer concerns all point to a widespread (voluntary) removal of antibiotic feed additives for animal growth promotion. In particular, Regulation (EC) 1831/2003 lays down provisions phasing out the authorisations of AGPs in the European Union as from 1 January 2006. This book discusses how this will affect the use/non-use practice of AGPs. Attention is given to the current status and rational design of developments and strategies for animal feeding without the inclusion of AGPs. Topics covered include benefits and risks of AGPs, risk assessment, consumer concerns and demands, regulatory aspects and international developments, mode of action and innovative alternatives, and recent advances in the analysis of AGPs and related products. This book contains peer-reviewed papers presented at the international conference ""Antimicrobial Growth Promoters: Worldwide Ban on the Horizon?"". The book is filled with valuable information on the pros and cons of use of AGPs as well as on alternative nutritional solutions. It is aimed at professionals and researchers in the feed and food industry."

Download or read book Pork written by Paulo E.S. Munekata and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-09-02 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The processing of pork is a common technological practice that modifies the taste, flavor, texture and color of raw pork meat. Due to pork’s accessible price and versatility, the manufacture of pork products to offer a variety of options to consumers is an important strategy of the meat industries in this sector to improve profits and expand into new markets at the local, regional and international levels. The diversity of pork products reflects the diversity and history of many local cultures around the world, as well as a growing interest in preserving traditional processing practices. Pork: Meat Quality and Processed Meat Products delves into the various kinds of pork and the methods used to prepare it for consumption, including fresh meat products, fermented sausages, dry-cured products, blood sausages and cooked sausages. Each category starts with a specific raw material (entire cut vs. minced pork meat) to which is added a unique combination of ingredients (e.g., sodium chloride, starter cultures, blood, seasoning and spices). The method of processing (such as salting, drying, thermal processing and fermenting) takes consumer tastes and storage needs into account, as well as how each product will be consumed (cooked, sliced, spread and as an ingredient in other dishes, for instance). Consequently, a wide range of products made from pork are currently being produced worldwide. Added to this is the increasing importance of ingredients and health factors to consumers; the resulting demand for products that address specific health concerns is having a significant impact on research into and the production of pork meat products. Key Features: Comprehensively presents and discusses the wealth of information about pork products Includes specific details about the processing, quality of final products and innovation in the industry Presents innovative, health-oriented approaches to making traditional and commercial pork products Discusses healthier pork meat products that address consumer trends and government recommendations The production of health-oriented pork products is an emerging and promising investigation area with a direct impact on the currect market for meat products.

Book Dynamics in chains and networks

Download or read book Dynamics in chains and networks written by H.J. Bremmers and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Companies in food- and agribusiness chains and networks are facing ever-faster changes in the business environment, to which they must respond through continuous innovation. Societal concerns regarding animal welfare and environmental issues have to be met in a very competitive, increasingly global environment. The growing concern of consumers regarding the quality, traceability and environmental friendliness of products and processes call for fundamentally new ways of developing, producing and marketing products. New ways of organizing food supply networks, with new ties between firms and even between formerly separate sectors -such as the health and the food sector- are needed to cope with these new demands. This publication focusses on the dynamic response to these changes in chains and networks. Important topics include among others: critical success factors for design and control of innovative chains and networks, globalization of the business environment, effects of institutional and policy change, governance structures, technologies for managing interaction and design of information architectures for chains and networks."

Book Gaining the edge in pork and poultry production

Download or read book Gaining the edge in pork and poultry production written by J. Taylor-Pickard and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globally, pork and poultry production has become an extremely competitive industry. There is now more pork consumed in the world than any other meat, yet there is still intense competition for the industry to attract and retain consumers. Consumers continue to demand safe, high quality pork and poultry products at competitive prices compared to other high protein food alternatives. To ensure sustainability of both the pig and poultry industries, producers must endeavour to seek new technologies to improve production efficiency whilst lowering the cost of production and producing a quality product. This edited collection of articles is taken from a series of seminars that brought together some of the world’s leading authorities in the field of pig and poultry nutrition and production. The fundamental theme is to re-examine the current trends in productivity within the pig and poultry industries, and to identify nutritional and managerial means to improve competitiveness as well as the quality of the end product. The importance of animal health together with novel strategies for disease control and ways to minimise the environmental impact of pig and poultry production are covered. ‘Gaining the edge in pork and poultry production’ is aimed at nutritionists and animal producers as well as students and researchers studying animal and applied biological sciences.
