Book 20 Mule Team Days in Death Valley

Download or read book 20 Mule Team Days in Death Valley written by Harold O. Weight and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2018-02-27 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The saga of the great mule teams and giant wagons that are today’s romantic symbol of Death Valley began long before the first muleskinner piloted his lumbering borax freighters out of the Big Sink. Its roots were in that night when Aaron and Rosie Winters crouched in their darkened camp at Furnace Creek and read their future in the green-flickering flame of burning borax. But its seed went farther back.” First published in 1955, this is a wonderful book on the mule team days in California’s Death Valley during the 19th century. It contains observations on the natural history of mules and muleskinners, and the mining of desert borax. There is also a reprint of Henry G. Hanks’ Report on Death Valley from 1883.

Book excerpt: The twenty mule team is an iconic legend of the Death Valley territory and Mojave Desert. Its operation was short-lived, but during that time, this team of animals, humans, and wagons became forever etched into the romantic psyche of all who learned about it. Common citizens who had no association with the desert used products that had their beginnings in the mystique of Death Valley and the team. Even today, most every supermarket in the United States carries products with the well known twenty mule team silhouette on them. These borax related cleaning products are likely found worldwide. Rarely has such an obscure operation gained such fame as the impressive twenty mule team. This book tells the story behind the legend, revealing also what it was like to have worked as a laborer to extract the borax for transport to market. It is a time forever lost to the shroud of history, but the spirit lives on, and is celebrated regularly by enthusiasts who relive the glory of those days at planned desert events. Next time you see a desert dust devil approaching, imagine the colossal wagons and team lumbering along.Borax is a compound of boron, also known as sodium borate, and it brought in more money for a few entrepreneurs than all the other mining activities (gold, silver, lead, copper, etc.) combined - this prized salt is what really put the Death Valley territory on the map of common public awareness. Borax was so valuable, it was also known as white gold. It is part of what is left on the valley floor after many years of mineral evaporation in the scorching summer heat, and the miners who sought precious metals such as gold and silver overlooked its value. Humble but useful, borax is what led to the operation of Death Valley's famous twenty mule team, and was what thousands of Americans used during the mid-twentieth century to wash their hands and clothing. These giant wagons and rugged men responsible for hauling borax across the arid and merciless desert and through Wingate Wash in the 1880s are now legend, and have become an integral part of Old West Americana. Visitors to Furnace Creek can still view these wagons today.Choosing to do his own hauling from the Harmony Borax Works when borax prices dropped, William Coleman initiated this new method to get his borax to Mojave. Each team was comprised of 18 mules and 2 draft horses, the horse's heavier weight being used at the lead wagon for making turns easier. The two wooden borax wagons each carried over 10 tons of the powder in a volume of 4 by 6 by 16 feet. The rear wheels were 7 feet high, and the front were 5 feet. They had iron tires 8 inches wide and 1 inch thick. The third wagon was a metal cylinder carrying 1,050 gallons of precious water for crew and animals to survive the arduous 20 day round-trip desert journey (there are some accounts that state the water capacity of this cylinder was 500 gallons). The team moved along at an average speed of two miles per hour. The fully loaded rig weighed in excess of 30 tons. One twenty mule team left the Harmony Borax Works every 4 days, but the runs from this location ceased during the scorching summer months, with production continuing at the cooler Amargosa Borax Works until the fall of each year. It was a lot of back-breaking work that did not last long, but history shall never forget what happened here. Also included in this book is the story of Death Valley, as written by John Randolph Spears. In 1892, a book called "Illustrated Sketches of Death Valley and Other Borax Deserts of the Pacific Coast" was published by Rand, McNally & Company, written by John Randolph Spears, and destined to become a long-time authority on the Death Valley territory. "The Story of Death Valley" is the first chapter of that book. John was among the first to write of this territory, thus the accounts of his visit were seen as noteworthy, although his stories are laced with some unsubstantiated tales amidst the factual backdrop and history.

Download or read book Death Valley written by Robert P. Palazzo and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Death Valley, its harsh and rugged landscape established a national monument in 1933 and named a national park in 1994, has long held a fascination for visitors, even before it became tourist friendly. Shortly after the first visit of nonnative inhabitants, a party of forty-niners looking for a shortcut to the goldfields of California crossed this land with tragic results, inadvertently giving the valley its moniker. Despite the immense suffering in their midst, prospectors began exploring the area looking for mineral wealth. Boomtowns formed, prospered, and died all within a few years, most disappearing completely into the desert. Adding to Death Valley's mystique was the shameless self-promotion of Death Valley Scotty, which lasted for a period spanning more than 50 years.

Book Tear Down This Myth

Download or read book Tear Down This Myth written by Will Bunch and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2009-02-03 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this provocative new book, award-winning political journalist Will Bunch unravels the story of how a right-wing cabal hijacked the mixed legacy of Ronald Reagan, a personally popular but hugely divisive 1980s president, and turned him into a bronze icon to revive their fading ideology. They succeeded to the point where all the GOP candidates for president in 2008 scurried to claim his mantle, no matter how preposterous the fit. With clear eyes and an ever-present wit, Bunch reveals the truth about the Ronald Reagan legacy, including the following: Despite the idolatry of the last fifteen years, Reagan's average popularity as president was only, well, average, lower than that of a half-dozen modern presidents. More important, while he was in office, a majority of Americans opposed most of his policies and by 1988 felt strongly that the nation was on the wrong track. Reagan's 1981 tax cut, weighted heavily toward the rich, did not cause the economic recovery of the 1980s. It was fueled instead by dropping oil prices, the normal business cycle, and the tight fiscal policies of the chairman of the Federal Reserve appointed by Jimmy Carter. Reagan's tax cut did, however, help usher in the deregulated modern era of CEO and Wall Street greed. Most historians agree that Reagan's waste-ridden military buildup didn't actually "win the Cold War." And Reagan mythmakers ignore his real contributions -- his willingness to talk to his Soviet adversaries, his genuine desire to eliminate nuclear weapons, and the surprising role of a "liberal" Hollywood-produced TV movie. George H. W. Bush's and Bill Clinton's rolling back of Reaganomics during the 1990s spurred a decade of peace and prosperity as well as the reactionary campaign to pump up the myth of Ronald Reagan and restore right-wing hegemony over Washington. This effort has led to war, bankrupt energy policies, and coming generations of debt. With masterful insight, Bunch exposes this dangerous effort to reshape America's future by rewriting its past. As the Obama administration charts its course, he argues, it should do so unencumbered by the dead weight of misplaced and unearned reverence.

The Pacific Coast Borax Company first used the Death Valley Railroad to transport its ore to market and then to transport Death Valley tourists to its Furnace Creek Resort. "Death Valley Scotty's" leap to national fame came as a direct result of his chartering a private train to break the Los Angeles to Chicago speed record. The Carson & Colorado Railroad on the west and the Tonopah & Tidewater Railroad on the east provided support to Death Valley's mining activity, its associated boomtowns, and early tourism.

Book Extraction Politics

Download or read book Extraction Politics written by Nicholas S. Paliewicz and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2024-01-29 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation into one of the largest and most lucrative mineral mining companies in the world, Rio Tinto, Extraction Politics reveals how the company constructs a presence in the places it operates and shapes meanings and orientations toward the environment. Taking readers on a “rhetorical pilgrimage” across the American Southwest, Nicholas Paliewicz shows how Rio Tinto creates adaptable corporate identities. From Ronald Reagan’s frontiersman advertisements for the Borax Mine in California to the pioneer Mormon persona at Bingham Canyon Mine in Salt Lake City and the folksy, paternalistic perspective toward the San Carlos Apache at the proposed mine at Oak Flat, Arizona, the company appropriates local history to embed itself as a valued member of the public—without having to settle in those ecological communities and bear the costs of extraction. This does not occur without resistance, however. Paliewicz also shows how activists use these same tactics to expose Rio Tinto as an exploitative, colonialist polluter. In an era of surging demand for dwindling supplies of minerals and metals, this book previews what the future of extractivism may look like. Extraction Politics will appeal to scholars and students of environmental communication and activist politics as well as general readers interested in the climate crisis.
