Book Groups and Symmetry A Guide to Discovering Mathematics

Download or read book Groups and Symmetry A Guide to Discovering Mathematics written by David W. Farmer and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1996 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematics is discovered by looking at examples, noticing patterns, making conjectures, and testing those conjectures. Once discovered, the final results get organized and put in textbooks. The details and the excitement of the discovery are lost. This book introduces the reader to the excitement of the original discovery. By means of a wide variety of tasks, readers are led to find interesting examples, notice patterns, devise rules to explain the patterns, and discover mathematics for themselves. The subject studied here is the mathematics behind the idea of symmetry, but the methods and ideas apply to all of mathematics. The only prerequisites are enthusiasm and a knowledge of basic high-school math. The book is only a guide. It will start you off in the right direction and bring you back if you stray too far. The excitement and the discovery are left to you.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computational Complexity Theory is the study of how much of a given resource is required to perform the computations that interest us the most. Four decades of fruitful research have produced a rich and subtle theory of the relationship between different resource measures and problems. At the core of the theory are some of the most alluring open problems in mathematics. This book presents three weeks of lectures from the IAS/Park City Mathematics Institute Summer School on computational complexity. The first week gives a general introduction to the field, including descriptions of the basic mo.

Download or read book Polynomials written by Cheon Seoung Ryoo and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2019-05-02 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polynomials are well known for their ability to improve their properties and for their applicability in the interdisciplinary fields of engineering and science. Many problems arising in engineering and physics are mathematically constructed by differential equations. Most of these problems can only be solved using special polynomials. Special polynomials and orthonormal polynomials provide a new way to analyze solutions of various equations often encountered in engineering and physical problems. In particular, special polynomials play a fundamental and important role in mathematics and applied mathematics. Until now, research on polynomials has been done in mathematics and applied mathematics only. This book is based on recent results in all areas related to polynomials. Divided into sections on theory and application, this book provides an overview of the current research in the field of polynomials. Topics include cyclotomic and Littlewood polynomials; Descartes' rule of signs; obtaining explicit formulas and identities for polynomials defined by generating functions; polynomials with symmetric zeros; numerical investigation on the structure of the zeros of the q-tangent polynomials; investigation and synthesis of robust polynomials in uncertainty on the basis of the root locus theory; pricing basket options by polynomial approximations; and orthogonal expansion in time domain method for solving Maxwell's equations using paralleling-in-order scheme.

Book Algebras Lattices Varieties

Download or read book Algebras Lattices Varieties written by Ralph N. McKenzie and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2018-07-09 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the foundations of a general theory of algebras. Often called “universal algebra”, this theory provides a common framework for all algebraic systems, including groups, rings, modules, fields, and lattices. Each chapter is replete with useful illustrations and exercises that solidify the reader's understanding. The book begins by developing the main concepts and working tools of algebras and lattices, and continues with examples of classical algebraic systems like groups, semigroups, monoids, and categories. The essence of the book lies in Chapter 4, which provides not only basic concepts and results of general algebra, but also the perspectives and intuitions shared by practitioners of the field. The book finishes with a study of possible uniqueness of factorizations of an algebra into a direct product of directly indecomposable algebras. There is enough material in this text for a two semester course sequence, but a one semester course could also focus primarily on Chapter 4, with additional topics selected from throughout the text.

Book Frobenius Manifolds Quantum Cohomology and Moduli Spaces

Download or read book Frobenius Manifolds Quantum Cohomology and Moduli Spaces written by I︠U︡. I. Manin and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1999 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first monograph dedicated to the systematic exposition of the whole variety of topics related to quantum cohomology. The subject first originated in theoretical physics (quantum string theory) and has continued to develop extensively over the last decade. The author's approach to quantum cohomology is based on the notion of the Frobenius manifold. The first part of the book is devoted to this notion and its extensive interconnections with algebraic formalism of operads, differential equations, perturbations, and geometry. In the second part of the book, the author describes the construction of quantum cohomology and reviews the algebraic geometry mechanisms involved in this construction (intersection and deformation theory of Deligne-Artin and Mumford stacks). Yuri Manin is currently the director of the Max-Planck-Institut für Mathematik in Bonn, Germany. He has authored and coauthored 10 monographs and almost 200 research articles in algebraic geometry, number theory, mathematical physics, history of culture, and psycholinguistics. Manin's books, such as Cubic Forms: Algebra, Geometry, and Arithmetic (1974), A Course in Mathematical Logic (1977), Gauge Field Theory and Complex Geometry (1988), Elementary Particles: Mathematics, Physics and Philosophy (1989, with I. Yu. Kobzarev), Topics in Non-commutative Geometry (1991), and Methods of Homological Algebra (1996, with S. I. Gelfand), secured for him solid recognition as an excellent expositor. Undoubtedly the present book will serve mathematicians for many years to come.

Book Portraits of the Earth

    Book Details:
  • Author : Timothy G. Feeman
  • Publisher : American Mathematical Soc.
  • Release : 2002
  • ISBN : 0821832557
  • Pages : 141 pages

Download or read book Portraits of the Earth written by Timothy G. Feeman and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2002 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ``Every map is a tool, a product of human effort and creativity, that represents some aspects of our world or universe ... [This] course was powered by the belief that by exploring the mathematical ideas involved in creating and analyzing maps, students would see how mathematics could help them to understand and explain their world.'' -from the Preface Portraits of the Earth exemplifies the AMS's mission to bring the power and vitality of mathematical thought to the nonexpert. It isdesigned to teach students to think logically and to analyze the technical information that they so readily encounter every day. Maps are exciting, visual tools that we encounter on a daily basis: from street maps to maps of the world accompanying news stories to geologic maps depicting theunderground structure of the earth. This book explores the mathematical ideas involved in creating and analyzing maps, a topic that is rarely discussed in undergraduate courses. It is the first modern book to present the famous problem of mapping the earth in a style that is highly readable and mathematically accessible to most students. Feeman's writing is inviting to the novice, yet also interesting to readers with more mathematical experience. Through the visual context of maps andmapmaking, students will see how contemporary mathematics can help them to understand and explain the world. Topics explored are the shape and size of the earth, basic spherical geometry, and why one can't make a perfect flat map of the planet. The author discusses different attributes that maps can have anddetermines mathematically how to design maps that have the desired features. The distortions that arise in making world maps are quantitatively analyzed. There is an in-depth discussion on the design of numerous map projections-both historical and contemporary-as well as conformal and equal-area maps. Feeman looks at how basic map designs can be modified to produce maps with any center, and he indicates how to generalize methods to produce maps of arbitrary surfaces of revolution. Also includedare end-of-chapter exercises and laboratory projects. Particularly interesting is a chapter that explains how to use MapleR add-on software to make maps from geographic data points. This book would make an excellent text for a basic undergraduate mathematics or geography course and would beespecially appealing to the teacher who is interested in exciting visual applications in the classroom. It would also serve nicely as supplementary reading for a course in calculus, linear algebra, or differential geometry. Prerequisites include a solid grasp of trigonometry and basic calculus.
