Book excerpt: Filling a notable gap in scholarship on 2 Peter and Jude, Peter Davids artfully unpacks these two neglected but fascinating epistles that deal with the confrontation between the Greco-Roman world and the burgeoning first-century Jesus communities.Davids firmly grasps the overall structure of these oft-maligned epistles and presents a strong case for 2 Peter and Jude as coherent, consistent documents. Marked by exceptional exegesis, sharp, independent judgments, a singular combination of rhetorical and narrative analysis, and timely application to the concerns of the local church, Davids's work not only connects with the latest scholarship but also transforms scholarly insights into helpful conclusions benefiting all believers.

Book excerpt: "First Peter could also be called "The Epistle (or even Gospel) of God's Grace." The letter is fairly brief, just five chapters, but it touches on several key doctrines including the Christian life, the requirements of holiness, and the duties of husbands and wives to one another. It was one of Martin Luther's favorites. The theme of 2 Peter is Beware False Teachers! Peter explains that false teaching and other attacks will take on many forms and come from many different directions. So teach the people you love about their Lord."--Back cover

Book excerpt: 2 Peter is one of the most powerful books in the Bible to prepare you for these last days. For many years now, I have been living in the truths of this little book perhaps more than any other in the Bible. The message of the book is very simple; yet, very profound. There are two things that are coming - false teachers and the judgments of God. In fact, the judgments of God are coming because of the false teachers! And Christian believers must prepare for both.2 Peter gives an amazing revelation of how the Lord empowers and equips Christians to discern the false teachers who are here now and who are coming later. They have deceived, defeated, and even destroyed God's people (2:1-3) in the past, of which, Balaam is a prime example (2:15). They are the "scoffers" and "mockers" who "will come in the last days" (3:3). Through God's "divine power" (1:3) and "exceedingly great and precious promises" (1:4), Christians actually become "partakers of the divine nature" (1:4). This is how we "escape" the "corruption that is in the world through lust" (1:4) and the "corruptions" of false teachers (2:19-20). Christians make their "call and election sure" (1:10) by adding virtues to their lives (1:5-8) and "growing in the grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ" (3:18).God always judges false teachers and their heresies. Such "heresies" are "destructive" and bring "swift destruction" (2:1), and, unfortunately, "many will follow these destructive ways" (2:2), but "their destruction does not slumber" (2:3). The false prophets are "like natural brute beasts made to be caught and destroyed" (2:12). There are even those who "twist the Scriptures" to "their own destruction" (3:16).To show God's judgments against false teachers and those who live "ungodly" lives, He has already judged the "angels who sinned" (2:4), the "world of the ungodly" at the time of "Noah" and "the flood" (2:5, 3:6), and "Sodom and Gomorrah," which were "condemned to destruction" (2:6). These massive judgments are set forth as "examples" of what He will do "to those who afterward would live ungodly" lives (2:6). Jude also highlights God's judgments on the "angels" (v6) and "Sodom and Gomorrah" (v7), but adds God's own "people who were saved out of the land of Egypt", but "afterward He destroyed those who did not believe" (v5). God's judgments bring destruction. The biggest judgment will come on the last day - "the Day of the Lord" (3:10). This "Day of Judgment" will cause everything in the heavens and earth to be "dissolved," "burned up," "melt," and "pass away" (3:10-12). The "scoffers" (3:4) deny and don't believe this judgment will ever come. But God's delay doesn't mean God's denial. The delay is so that more will "come to repentance" (3:9). We are assured that "the heavens and the earth" "are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men" (3:7).Christians don't live in fear but in faith. We are "looking for," "look for," and "looking forward" (3:12-14) to the "new heavens and the new earth" (3:13) because we have been "diligent" to be "found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless" (3:14) because of our "holy conduct and godliness" (3:12).This commentary opens with an introduction that takes a close look at this important apostle - Simon Peter. We also explain why Peter is the author. What follows is a verse-by-verse teaching on the three chapters of 2 Peter. We conclude with homework questions of each chapter for personal or group Bible study, a detailed bibliography review for those seeking other resources, and a Scripture index for easy referencing.

Book Technology and Globalisation

Download or read book Technology and Globalisation written by David Pretel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-13 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the role of experts and expertise in the dynamics of globalisation since the mid-nineteenth century. It shows how engineers, scientists and other experts have acted as globalising agents, providing many of the materials and institutional means for world economic and technical integration. Focusing on the study of international connections, Technology and Globalisation illustrates how expert practices have shaped the political economies of interacting countries, entire regions and the world economy. This title brings together a range of approaches and topics across different regions, transcending nationally-bounded historical narratives. Each chapter deals with a particular topic that places expert networks at the centre of the history of globalisation. The contributors concentrate on central themes including intellectual property rights, technology transfer, tropical science, energy production, large technological projects, technical standards and colonial infrastructures. Many also consider methodological, theoretical and conceptual issues.

Book Envisioning the World Mapping and Making the Global

Download or read book Envisioning the World Mapping and Making the Global written by Sandra Holtgreve and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2021-03-31 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The »global« is permanently made and remade by how it is envisioned in political projects, in language, and in literature. Through a range of case studies, this book shows how practices of referring to the world actually constitute the global in its many facets. It aims to provide a sense in readers of how the global is not something »out there«, but that it is embedded in a wide range of the seemingly »everyday«. The contributions appeal to a readership from a background in Sociology, History, Political Science, Literary Studies, and Social Work.

Book Microbes at Work

    Book Details:
  • Author : Heribert Insam
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2009-12-07
  • ISBN : 3642040438
  • Pages : 329 pages

Download or read book Microbes at Work written by Heribert Insam and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-12-07 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the goals of environmentally sound waste treatment is the recycling of organic wastes. The most practiced options are composting and anaerobic digestion, both processes being carried out by microorganisms. This book provides an overview of the various ways microbes are doing their job and gives the reader an impression of their potential. The sixteen chapters of this book summarize the advantages and disadvantages of treatment processes, whether they are aerobic like composting or work without oxygen like anaerobic digestion for biogas (methane) production. These chapters show the potential of microorganisms to create valuable resources from otherwise wasted materials. These resources include profitable organic, humus-like soil conditioners or fertilizer components which are often suppressive to plant diseases. Composts may thus improve soil carbon sequestration, or support sustainable agriculture by reducing the need for mineral fertilizers or pesticides. If anaerobic digestion is used, the biogas produced may replace fossil fuels. Thus, proper biological waste treatment with the help of microorganisms should contribute to a reduction of anthropogenic greenhouse gas production.

Book Handbook of Downstream Processing

Download or read book Handbook of Downstream Processing written by E. Goldberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 745 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last two decades have seen a phenomenal growth of the field of genetic or biochemical engineering and have witnessed the development and ultimately marketing of a variety of products-typically through the manipulation and growth of different types of microorganisms, followed by the recovery and purification of the associated products. The engineers and biotechnologists who are involved in the full-scale process design of such facilities must be familiar with the variety of unit operations and equipment and the applicable regulatory requirements. This book describes current commercial practice and will be useful to those engineers working in this field in the design, construction and operation of pharmaceutical and biotechnology plants. It will be of help to the chemical or pharmaceutical engineer who is developing a plant design and who faces issues such as: Should the process be batch or continuous or a combination of batch and continuous? How should the optimum process design be developed? Should one employ a new revolutionary separation which could be potentially difficult to validate or use accepted technology which involves less risk? Should the process be run with ingredients formulated from water for injection, deionized water, or even filtered tap water? Should any of the separations be run in cold rooms or in glycol jacketed lines to minimize microbial growth where sterilization is not possible? Should the process equipment and lines be designed to be sterilized in-place, cleaned-in-place, or should every piece be broken down, cleaned and autoclaved after every turn?

Download or read book Race for Justice written by Richard Reddie and published by Monarch Books. This book was released on 2022-02-18 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2020 Britain marks the 25th anniversary of Racial Justice Sunday. This movement was established at a time when the UK was having to face up to both overt and subversive forms of racism, characterised by the tragic killing of black teenager, Stephen Lawrence, in Eltham in 1993. This murder, and other racist attacks, gave mainstream visibility to the struggle of many Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic people to obtain equality and justice. Race for Justice brings together a collection of voices on this vital issue from across the Christian denominations. Each contributor to this volume serves as their particular denomination’s racial justice, equalities, diversity or inclusion officers. Equipped with frontline experience in the fight against racism, they each give their perspective on the successes and failures of race relations over the last quarter of a century, as well as addressing contemporary challenges and their hopes for the future.

Book Harmony and Unity The Life of Niels Bohr

Download or read book Harmony and Unity The Life of Niels Bohr written by Niels Blaedel and published by Plunkett Lake Press. This book was released on 2019-08-09 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Blaedel has addressed himself to the task of writing a full-length biography that covers all facets of his subject and that emphasizes that they form part of one harmonious unity. I think that on the whole he has succeeded remarkably well. He gives an accurate picture of the man theorists of my generation both admired and loved. And not only of the physicist: Bohr’s relations with his family and in particular with his wife, an admirable woman, are drawn with sympathy and understanding. Blaedel’s sketch of the atmosphere at Bohr’s institute in Copenhagen... is true to life; it will raise nostalgic memories among those who, like myself, experienced it... [Blaedel] has produced a fitting tribute to a great scientist and a noble man.” — H.B.G. Casimir, Nature “The book is intended primarily for nonphysicists; nevertheless it offers extensive (albeit nontechnical) accounts of all aspects of Bohr’s scientific work. The consistent emphasis, however, is on Bohr as a person—his character, interests andWeltanschauung. Niels Blaedel was able to draw on matchless resources, both human and material: Bohr’s family (especially his widow, Margrethe Bohr, who shared both her memories and her correspondence), Bohr’s former friends and colleagues, and a rich supply of documentary and photographic material from Danish collections, as well as from the AIP Niels Bohr Library in New York. The result is a lavishly illustrated and affectionate account of Bohr from his earliest years until his death... as a general picture of Bohr and his work this book can be warmly recommended.” — Anthony P. French, Physics Today “Niels Bohr is generally regarded as a giant of twentieth-century physics... Bohr was securely entrenched in a Danish culture that is difficult for many historians to penetrate. It is important, then, that at last a biography has been written by a Dane with wide knowledge of the society in which Bohr lived and moved... The author had unprecedented access to Bohr’s family correspondence, primarily with his wife Margrethe, who, before she died at ninety-four in 1984, read Blaedel many letters from her husband... Blaedel’s book, written on commission for the Bohr centennial and published in Danish in 1985, contains valuable insights on Bohr, particularly as they relate to his previously unavailable family correspondence and his place in Danish culture.” — Finn Aaserud, Isis: A Journal of the History of Science “Though Niels Bohr is best known as a distinguished citizen of the international community of science, he was also a leading citizen of Denmark. This is the first biography of Bohr to deal with both of these dimensions to his life, without which it is hard to fully understand either the man or his work.” — Robert March, University of Wisconsin-Madison, author of Physics for Poets “... the book can be read without any background knowledge in physics. But its overwhelming number of photographs and rich use of letters and recollections make Niels Blaedel’s book closely resemble the great standard biography — a literary monument to Niels Bohr.” — Flemming Christian Nielsen, Jyllands-Posten “Niels Blaedel has solved an almost insoluble problem... thereby clarifying the life of Niels Bohr... a well-constructed piece of documentation and a coherent piece of scientific history.” — Jens Kistrup, Berlingske Tidende

Book Redirecting Science Niels Bohr Philanthropy and the Rise of Nuclear Physics

Download or read book Redirecting Science Niels Bohr Philanthropy and the Rise of Nuclear Physics written by Finn Aaserud and published by Plunkett Lake Press. This book was released on 2019-08-17 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How and why do complex scientific disciplines such as physics change emphasis from one sub-discipline to another? Do such transitions stem entirely from developments within the discipline itself or also from external factors? This book addresses these questions by examining the transition from atomic to nuclear physics, theoretically and experimentally, at Niels Bohr’s Institute for Theoretical Physics in Copenhagen in the 1930s. On the basis of extensive archival research, Finn Aaserud shows that the “Copenhagen spirit,” the playful research atmosphere under Bohr’s fatherly guidance that permeated the Institute, thrived because of extra-scientific circumstances that Bohr exploited to the fullest, such as the need to help Jewish physicists out of Hitler’s Germany and the changing funding policies of private foundations, notably those of the Rockefeller Foundation which made it opportune to introduce research in experimental biology at the Institute. “A clear, carefully developed and substantially convincing argument... Aaserud gives a detailed and impressively documented account of the direction of Bohr’s scientific interests... Aaserud is... to be congratulated for his original, clear — indeed, didactic — work of scholarship and enlightenment.” — Paul Forman, Physics Today “A professional historian’s study of the happenings at the Niels Bohr Institute in the decisive years 1930 to 1940... In particular, the... support of the Institute by Danish and other foundations, mainly the Rockefeller Foundation, are treated in great detail, revealing many interesting aspects of these relationships... The detailed accounts... of Bohr’s negotiations are a testimony to Bohr’s uncanny ability to get what he wanted from the various foundations... Aaserud’s book is an invaluable source of information [showing] that Bohr was not only an inspiring physicist and philosopher but also a cunning negotiator who knew how to make use of his great reputation for the benefit of science.” — Victor F. Weisskopf, Science “Aaserud elucidates Bohr’s skills not only as mentor and guiding hand behind the ‘Copenhagen spirit,’ but also as financial negotiator.” — Neil Wasserman, Isis, A Journal of the History of Science Society “This book teaches us that running such [a truly elite] institution required entrepreneurial skills as well as scientific genius. Bohr had an abundance of both.” — Jeremy Bernstein, Nature “Redirecting Science is the history of Bohr’s institute during the 1930s when it experienced a drastic change in its research priorities, from a laissez-faire mode of work and lack of clearly defined research programme to a concerted research effort in nuclear physics and experimental biology... Aaserud gives a highly interesting account of the interaction between physics and biology... Aaserud’s carefully documented work is an excellent example of how institutional history may transcend social and institutional limitations and integrate also conceptual history of science.” — Helge Kragh, Centaurus “By showing that a new research programme at one of the most important scientific institutes in the world was triggered, and pushed forward, by social and financial considerations, this book delivers yet another blow to the tired old idea that scientific knowledge is driven by its own internal, inexorable logic. It also throws valuable light on Bohr’s activities and strategies as a fundraiser and institution builder.” — John Krige, The British Journal for the History of Science
