The Cartulary-Chronicle of St-Pierre of Bèze is both a history of the monastery and a collection of its 331 charters, from its seventh-century foundation until the middle of the twelfth century. Bèze was a Benedictine house whose history included at least six incidents of sacking and destruction – and according to its twelfth-century chronicler it always recovered and emerged stronger than ever. Combining the history of Burgundy and Francia with the history of his house, John, the chronicler, created a past for Bèze as he wanted it to be remembered. Based on John’s autograph manuscript, The Cartulary-Chronicle of St-Pierre of Bèze is published here in full for the first time. While the monks of Bèze have often been overshadowed by their more famous neighbours, the monks of Dijon, this edition recounts the history of one of the oldest houses in Burgundy and gives it its proper due.

Its cartulary, put together in the 1120s at the height of the monastery's prestige and wealth, is a crucial source of information for the history of west Francia before the twelfth century and is here published in full for the first time. Constance Brittain Bouchard begins the edition with a concise history of the monastery, codicological information on the cartulary and the other manuscripts that contain copies of charters from Montier-en-Der, and a close discussion of the polytpyque and the forged charters found within the cartulary. The Latin text of each charter is preceded by a summary of its contents, including notes identifying place names and individuals. The edition also includes a chronology for the charters, a bibliography of works on the abbey, and several maps. ENGLISH HISTORICAL REVIEW The fifteenth-century cartulary of the Benedictine nunnery of Chatteris Abbey in Cambridgeshire (founded in the early eleventh century) has important implications for the study of women religious, especially in the light of the small number of surviving cartularies from English nunneries, yet until now it has received little attention, perhaps due to its damage in the Cotton Library fire of 1731. This critical edition of the manuscript, which contains documents copied into it from the mid-twelfth to the fifteenth centuries, offers a full transcription, together with historical notes and apparatus. The introduction draws on the cartulary itself, as well as manorial and episcopal records, to analyse the nunnery's relationship with its patron, the bishop of Ely, and the development and management of its estates; it also examines the location and layout of the abbey, the social and geographical origins of the nuns, and the production and organisation of the cartulary. The edition is accompanied by an annotated listof all known abbesses, prioresses and nuns. CLAIRE BREAYgained her Ph.D. at the Institute for Historical Research at the University of London; she is currently a curator of medieval manuscripts at the British Library.

Book excerpt: An in-depth exploration of documentary forgery at the turn of the first millennium Forgery and Memory at the End of the First Millennium takes a fresh look at documentary forgery and historical memory in the Middle Ages. In the tenth and eleventh centuries, religious houses across Europe began falsifying texts to improve local documentary records on an unprecedented scale. As Levi Roach illustrates, the resulting wave of forgery signaled major shifts in society and political culture, shifts which would lay the foundations for the European ancien régime. Spanning documentary traditions across France, England, Germany and northern Italy, Roach examines five sets of falsified texts to demonstrate how forged records produced in this period gave voice to new collective identities within and beyond the Church. Above all, he indicates how this fad for falsification points to new attitudes toward past and present—a developing fascination with the signs of antiquity. These conclusions revise traditional master narratives about the development of antiquarianism in the modern era, showing that medieval forgers were every bit as sophisticated as their Renaissance successors. Medieval forgers were simply interested in different subjects—the history of the Church and their local realms, rather than the literary world of classical antiquity. A comparative history of falsified records at a crucial turning point in the Middle Ages, Forgery and Memory at the End of the First Millennium offers valuable insights into how institutions and individuals rewrote and reimagined the past.
