Book In Memory of Self and Comrades

Download or read book In Memory of Self and Comrades written by Michael K. Shaffer and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 2019-09-24 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas W. Colley served in one of the most active and famous units in the Civil War, the 1st Virginia Cavalry, which fought in battles in the Eastern Theater, from First Manassas/Bull Run to the defense of Petersburg. Colley was born November 11, 1837, outside Abingdon, Virginia, and grew up knowing the daily demands of life on a farm. In May 1861, along with the other members of the Washington Mounted Rifles, he left his home in Washington County and reported to camp in Richmond. During the war, Colley received wounds on three different occasions: first at Waterloo Bridge in 1862, again at Kelly’s Ford in 1863, and finally at Haw’s Shop in 1864. The engagement at Haw’s Shop resulted in the amputation of his left foot, thereby ending his wartime service. The first modern scholarly edition of Colley’s writings, In Memory of Self and Comrades dramatizes Colley’s fate as a wounded soldier mustered out before the war’s conclusion. Colley’s postwar reflections on the war reveal his struggle to earn a living and maintain his integrity while remaining somewhat unreconciled to his condition. He found much of his solace through writing and sought to advance his education after the war. As one of an estimated 20,000 soldiers who underwent amputation during the Civil War, his memoirs reveal the challenges of living with what many might recognize today as post-traumatic stress disorder. Annotations from editor Michael K. Shaffer provide further context to Colley’s colorful and insightful writings on both his own condition and the condition of other veterans also dealing with amputations

Book Opportunities Gained And Lost J E B Stuart s Cavalry Operations In The Seven Days Campaign

Download or read book Opportunities Gained And Lost J E B Stuart s Cavalry Operations In The Seven Days Campaign written by Major James R. Smith and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study evaluates Confederate cavalry operations 12 June to 3 July 1862, as a prelude to and as a part of the “Seven Days Campaign.” General Robert E. Lee’s Seven Days Campaign succeeded in defeating a Union offensive aimed at Richmond, Virginia and served as an important turning point in the American Civil War. The thesis seeks to determine the substantive contributions General J. E. B. Stuart’s cavalry brigade made to this Confederate victory, as well as to assess the strengths and shortcomings of his particular style of mounted employment Stuart launched an armed reconnaissance 12-15 June 1862 known thereafter as the “Chickahominy Raid” that provided intelligence vital to General Lee’s success in the campaign and helped to bolster sagging Confederate morale. This was the first of the Confederate cavalry leader’s renowned “raids,” a style of operation that would be adopted by other Confederate mounted units and the Union cavalry as well. Stuart also attempted to strike out independently during the Seven Days Campaign itself, but his activities in this regard were not well synchronized with the rest of Lee’s army. As a result, Stuart missed opportunities to play a more decisive role in the battles outside Richmond.

Book U S Colored Troops Defeat Confederate Cavalry

Download or read book U S Colored Troops Defeat Confederate Cavalry written by Edwin W. Besch and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2017-03-27 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wilson's Wharf was the first major clash between U.S. Colored Troops and the Army of Northern Virginia. The 1st and 10th USCT infantry regiments, supported by two cannon and two U.S. Navy gunboats, faced 11 detachments of veteran Confederate cavalry who were under orders to "kill every man." Union commander General Edward Wild, a one-armed abolitionist, refused General Fitzhugh Lee's demand for surrender, telling Lee to "go to Hell." The battle resulted in a victory for the mainly black Union force. This book describes the action in detail and in the larger context of the history of black U.S. servicemen, including the British recruitment of runaway slaves during the Revolutionary War, the black Colonial Marines who joined the British in torching Washington in the War of 1812, and the South's attempts to enlist slaves in the final months of the Civil War.
