Download or read book GIS written by Michael F. Worboys and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1995-10-30 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This aims to make the computing principles underlying geographic databases understandable and accessible to current and potential users of such systems. It overviews database system philosophy; describes database concepts eg storage, retrieval, architecture, conceptual modelling, and database querying. It then focuses on the characteristics of GIS, spatial data and spatial databases, concluding with a discussion of current/future research trends.
Download or read book GIS written by Matt Duckham and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-07-30 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes an entirely new chapter on AI and GIS, including ontologies and the Semantic Web, knowledge representation (KR) and spatial reasoning, machine learning and spatial analysis, and neural networks and deep learning. Presents new material reflecting the advances made in cloud computing, stream computing, and sensor networks, as well as extensively revised and updated content on cartography, visualization, and interaction design. Connects the technology to the social aspects and implications of GIS, including privacy and fair information practices, FATE (fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics), and codes of conduct for responsible use of GIS. Integrates the necessary background to foundational areas, such as databases and data structures, algorithms and indexes, system architecture and AI, provided in context so readers new to those topics can still understand the concepts being discussed. Incorporates over 20 carefully explained spatial algorithms; over 60 inset boxes with in-depth material that enriches the central topics; and more than 300 color figures to support the reader in mastering key concepts. Welcomes a new coauthor, Qian (Chayn) Sun, to the third edition who brings her expertise in topics such as web mapping, cloud computing, critical geography, and machine learning with big spatial data.
Download or read book History of Cartography written by Elri Liebenberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-05 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume comprises the proceedings of the 2010 International Symposium of the ICA Commission on the History of Cartography. The nineteen papers reflect the research interests of the Commission which span the period from the Enlightenment to the evolution of Geographical Information Science. Apart from studies on general cartography, the volume, which reflects some co-operation with the ICA Commission on Maps and Society and the United States Geological Survey (USGS), contains regional studies on cartographic endeavours in Northern America, Brazil, and Southern Africa. The ICA Commission on Maps and Society participated as its field of study often overlaps with that of the ICA Commission on the History of Cartography. The USGS which is the official USA mapping organisation, was invited to emphasise that the ICA Commission on the History of Cartography is not only interested in historical maps, but also has as mandate the research and document the history of Geographical Information Science. Download or read book Approaches to Human Geography written by Stuart C. Aitken and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2014-12-01 with total page 623 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The book covers some of the (traditionally) most obtuse and difficult-to-grasp philosophical ideas that have influenced geographers/geography. The fact that these are presented in an inclusive and accessible manner is a key strength. Many students have commented that the chapters they have read have encouraged them to read more in this field, which is fantastic from a lecturer′s perspective." - Richard White, Sheffield Hallam University A new edition of the classic Approaches text for students, organised in three sections, which overviews and explains the history and philosophy of Human Geographies in all its applications by those who practise it: Section One – Philosophies: Positivist Geography / Humanism / Feminist Geographies / Marxisms / Structuration Theory / Human Animal / Realism / Postmodern Geographies/ Poststructuralist Theories / Actor-Network Theory, / Postcolonialism / Geohumanities / Technologies Section Two – People: Institutions and Cultures / Places and Contexts / Memories and Desires / Understanding Place / Personal and Political / Becoming a Geographer / Movement and Encounter / Spaces and Flows / Places as Thoughts Section Three – Practices: Mapping and Geovisualization / Quantification, Evidence, and Positivism / Geographic Information Systems / Humanism / Activism / Feminist Geographies / Poststructuralist Theories / Psychoanalysis / Environmental Inquiry / Contested Geographies and Culture Wars Fully updated throughout and with eight brand new chapters - this is the core text for modules on history, theory, and practice in Human Geography.
Download or read book Data Structures for Raster Graphics written by Laurens R.A. Kessener and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raster graphics differs from the more traditional vector or line graphics in the sense that images are not made up from line segments but from discrete elements orderly arranged in a two-dimensional rectangular region. There are two reasons for the growing popularity of raster graphics or bit-mapped displays: I) the possibilities they offer to show extremely realistic pictures 2) the dropping prices of those displays and associated processors and memories. With the rise of raster graphics, all kinds of new techniques, methods, algorithms and data representations are associated -such as ray tracing, raster operations, and quadtrees-bringing with them a lot of fruitful research. As stated above raster graphics allows to create extremely realistic (synthesized) pictures. There are important applications in such diverse areas as industrial deSign, flight Simulation, education, image processing and animation. Unfortunately many applications are hampered by the fact that with the present state of the art they reqUire an excessive amount of computing resources. Hence it is worthwhile to investigate methods and techniques which may be of help in redudng computer costs associated with raster graphics applications. Since the choice of data srtuc tures influences the efficiency of algorithms in a crudal way, a workshop was set up in order to bring together a (limited) number of experienced researchers to dis cuss this topic. The workshop was held from 24 to 28 June 1985 at Steensel, a tiny village in the neighbourhood of Eindhoven, the Netherlands.
