Download or read book Alcohol guidelines written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Science and Technology Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2012-01-09 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report raises concerns about the Government's advice on sensible drinking and recommends that alcohol guidelines are reviewed. In 1987, the "sensible limits" for drinking were defined as 21 units of alcohol a week for men and 14 for women. By the early 1990s, scientific evidence suggesting that alcohol consumption might reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, prompted a review of the guidelines, and the drinking guidelines were then couched in daily terms: men should not regularly drink more than three to four units a day and women no more than two to three units a day. The Committee is sceptical about using the purported health benefits of alcohol as a basis for daily guidelines for all the adult population, particularly as any protective effects would only apply to men over 40 years and post-menopausal women. Evidence suggests that the guidelines should not be increased and that people should take at least two drink-free days a week. While public awareness of the existence of guidelines is high, a deeper understanding of what the guidelines were and of what a unit of alcohol looked like is lacking. Through the Public Health Responsibility Deal, the Government is working with the drinks industry to ensure that over 80% of alcoholic products on shelf will have labels with alcoholic unit content and the drinking guidelines by 2013. But the Government should remain mindful that sensible drinking messages may conflict with the business objectives of drinks companies and exercise proper scrutiny and oversight.

Book War The Impact on Minority and Indigenous Children

Download or read book War The Impact on Minority and Indigenous Children written by CATHERINE BARNES and published by Minority Rights Group. This book was released on 1997-11-01 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While children who are members of minority and indigenous communities suffer discrimination at the hands of the majority community, in today’s armed conflicts – where most are fought internally, pitching one group against another – this discrimination frequently turns to violence, with such children seen as ‘legitimate targets’ despite the wealth of international law to the contrary. MRG’s Report War: The Impact on Minority and Indigenous Children focuses on three recent or current armed conflicts and, through interviews with children and others, pieces together the effect these wars have had on: the Jumma children of the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh, the Maya children of Guatemala, and minority children of Somalia. The Report shows that these children have often come to be seen as ‘the enemy’, being murdered, raped, or tortured in the course of the war. Others have been forced to watch the killing or abuse of their parents and other members of their communities. Some have been forced to join militias where they have killed or been killed. Yet more have had to flee their homes, often without their families, and live as internally displaced people or as refugees; many have little hope of ever being reunited with their families or of being able to return home. A special feature of this Report is its recommendations which aim to help minimize the risks and threats to minority and indigenous children in armed conflicts. Each section offers a series of recommendations to the relevant governments and international bodies concerned, and these are complemented by a general set of recommendations at the end of the Report.

Book Community Care Practice and the Law

Download or read book Community Care Practice and the Law written by Michael Mandelstam and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 1999 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition of Community Care Practice and the Lawhas been substantially rewritten and restructured to reflect the rapid change affecting community care in legislation, the law courts, policy and practice. The book bridges the gap between law and practice by juxtaposing fully and systematically legislation, legal judgments in the courts, local ombudsman and health service ombudsman findings, Parliamentary debates and answers, and numerous reports about practice from the Department of Health, voluntary organisations, professional associations and academics. Distinctive features of the book include: two large digests of cases containing well over three hundred legal judgments and local ombudsman investigations; a chapter consisting of a practical checklist of questions - for managers, practitioners and users of services and their advisors - to check the lawfulness of policies, eligibility criteria and individual decisions; two overview, stand-alone chapters, one summarising the system, the other highlighting underlying themes and mechanisms; an inclusive approach embracing not only a range of both residential and non-residential care services, but also equipment and home adaptations, carers, direct payments, NHS services generally and continuing care, moving and handling law, legislation and guidance (old and new) underlying joint working and joint finance; avoidance of jargon.

Book Aboriginal Child Welfare Self Government and the Rights of Indigenous Children

Download or read book Aboriginal Child Welfare Self Government and the Rights of Indigenous Children written by Sonia Harris-Short and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-16 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses the contentious and topical issue of aboriginal self-government over child welfare. Using case studies from Australia and Canada, it discusses aboriginal child welfare in historical and comparative perspectives and critically examines recent legal reforms and changes in the design, management and delivery of child welfare services aimed at securing the 'decolonization' of aboriginal children and families. Within this context, the author identifies the limitations of reconciling the conflicting demands of self-determination and sovereignty and suggests that international law can provide more nuanced and culturally sensitive solutions. Referring to the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, it is argued that the effective decolonization of aboriginal child welfare requires a journey well beyond the single issue of child welfare to the heart of the debate over self-government, self-determination and sovereignty in both national and international law.
