Book Estimating the Missing People in the Uk 1991 Population Census

Download or read book Estimating the Missing People in the Uk 1991 Population Census written by Dr. H.M. Wasiul Islam and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-12-21 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to assess the coverage and the quality of the census data of the 1991 census, the Census Validation Survey (CVS) was carried out by the Social Survey Division of OPCS. The survey produced estimates of household spaces, households, and persons together with 95 percent confidence intervals. The CVS estimated the census undercount from six different samples, five of which were drawn from the census records and hence dependent. From the comparison between 1991 census results and demographic estimates, it was felt that CVS failed to estimate the true undercount figure of the 1991 census. Moreover, the CVS methodology was unable to estimate the undercount by age, sex, race, and geographic categories. This book presents methods for estimating population by age, sex, and race, as well as geographic categories. Three different estimators, Chandra-Sekar, Greenfield, and El-Sayed Nour, using information from two different sources (census and survey), are discussed. Adjustment factors are generally computed as the ratios of these estimates to the census counts. Average estimates from these three estimators may produce better adjustment factors. Models to produce more accurate estimates of the size of the closed population by using a second sample by matching with census and survey are also discussed. The models we present provide a mechanism for separating out the dependence between census and survey data induced by individual heterogeneity. The resulting data take the form of 2x2x2 table, in which only one of the eight cells is unknown. Using log-linear quasi-symmetry models we describe how to estimate the expected values of the observable cells of this table. To estimate the populations for local authorities (LA), a regression method is presented. The resulting estimates are found to be more accurate than the CVS estimates and were also close to the 1991 demographic estimates. We describe a methodology for estimating the accuracy of the dual systems estimates of population with the help of hypothetical data. The methodology is based on decompositions of the total error into components, such as sampling error, matching error, and other nonsampling errors. An imputation method and some recommendations are also discussed.

Book Tracing Your Ancestors Using the Census

Download or read book Tracing Your Ancestors Using the Census written by Emma Jolly and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2013-09-19 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pen & Sword guide to the census is detailed, accessible and authoritative, and it is one of the most comprehensive on the market. It has been written with the family historian in mind, and it is packed with advice on how to explore and get the most from the census records. As well as describing the modern censuses, it provides information on the less-known censuses dating from before 1841, and it covers the records of all the constituent parts of the British Isles. It is an essential introduction and tool for anyone who is researching the life and times of an ancestor. Emma Jolly describes how and why census records came to be created, then looks in detail at how to search the main censuses from 1841 to 1911. Each chapter covers the relevant historical context, compares online and other sources, identifies problems like lost or damaged records, and shows how the specific information in the census concerned can be interpreted effectively. While the censuses of England and Wales, Scotland, Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man are all examined, the main focus is on the English and Welsh census, with differences noted for other areas. An extensive appendix and bibliography, which, for ease of access, gathers together all the key resources in one place, is also provided.

Book Britain s rural Muslims

Download or read book Britain s rural Muslims written by Sarah Hackett and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-06 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immigration has long been associated with the urban landscape, from accounts of inner-city racial tension and discrimination during the 1960s and 1970s and studies of minority communities of the 1980s and 1990s, to the increased focus on cities amongst contemporary scholars of migration and diaspora. Though cities have long provided the geographical frameworks within which a significant share of post-war migration has taken place, Sarah Hackett argues that that there has long existed a rural dimension to Muslim integration in Britain. This book offers the first comprehensive study of Muslim migrant integration in rural Britain across the post-1960s period, examining the previously unexplored relationship between Muslim integration and rurality by using the county of Wiltshire in the South West of England as a case study. Drawing upon a range of archival material and oral histories, it challenges the long-held assumption that local authorities in more rural areas have been inactive, and even disinterested, in devising and implementing migration, integration and diversity policies, and sheds light on smaller and more dispersed Muslim communities that have traditionally been written out of Britain’s immigration history.
