Book Islam in Africa South of the Sahara

Download or read book Islam in Africa South of the Sahara written by Pade Badru and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2013-05-23 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Islam in Africa South of the Sahara: Essays in Gender Relations and Political Reform draws together contributions from scholars that focus on changes taking place in the practice of the religion and their effects on the political terrain and civil society. Contributors explore the dramatic changes in gender relations within Islam on the continent, occasioned in part by the events of 9/11 and the response of various Islamic states to growing negative media coverage. These explorations of the dynamics of religious change, reconfigured gender relations, and political reform consider not only the role of state authorities but the impact of ordinary Muslim women who have taken to challenging the surbodinate role assigned to them in Islam. Essays are far-ranging in their scope as the future of Islam in sub-Saharan Africa falls under the microscope, with contributing addressing such topics as the Islamic view of the historic Arab enslavement of Africans and colonialist ventures; studies of gender politics in Gambia, northern Nigeria, and Ghana; surveys of the impact of Sharia law in Nigeria and Sudan; the political role of Islam in Somalia, South Africa, and African diaspora communities. Islam in Africa South of the Sahara is an ideal reader for students and scholars of international politics, comparative theology, race and ethnicity, comparative sociology, African and Islamic studies.

Book Regional Policy and Regional Planning in Ghana

Download or read book Regional Policy and Regional Planning in Ghana written by Sam Ofori and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2002: This work is about the socio-economic and spatial impacts of planning policy aimed at improving the living standards and well-being of the regional communities of Ghana. Implicit, the effectiveness assessment of regional planning practice. It is set within the context of the new national planning system and offers strategic opportunities and challenges. Characteristically, the national and regional policies and contacts are probed and the lack of formal regional plan-making stressed. The author critically analyzes the problem of socio-economic and spatial disparities, over the mid-60s to the early 1990s, explaining the observed changes. The latter is, differentiatingly, done in terms of relevant theories and the empirics undertaken. These include the fashion of perception and conceptualization of development. Change is based on one-off micro-projects at the regional level and a meso-regional project within a sub-regional context. Dr Ofori equally stresses the implementations and local management of the planning policies and programmes. Inclusive in the dynamics behind the processes is the role of partnership. A further distinctive contribution is the identification of opportunities for planning intervention and policy recommendations for a better change in the future: towards making things happen.

Book Development in Unity Volume Two

Download or read book Development in Unity Volume Two written by Daasebre Prof. (Emeritus) Oti Boateng and published by Partridge Africa. This book was released on 2015-12-11 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Development in Unity Volume Two represents an eclectic repertoire of over forty years exploits and profile of a renowned international scholar and an eminent cultural African leader, Daasebre Professor (Emeritus) Oti Boateng, to inspire a new generational philosophy of development. In this treatise, the author, a distinguished authority in statistics , a United Nations Commissioner, and recipient of several national and international awards, including recognition by the American Biographic Institute as one of the five hundred best thinkers of the twenty-first century, seeks to blend scholarship and culture as mutually inclusive prerequisites to underpin contemporary models in addressing pertinent development challenges. The book pioneers an alternative innovative root-based development model to harness the potential of indigenous institutions of governance in ensuring self-sustaining inclusive local economic development as a hedge against poverty, insurgency mobilization, migration, and radicalization in response to the demands of contemporary global development challenges. It elucidates the truth that development has manifold aspects, dealing with every aspect of human life, and addresses its intrinsic challenges from an eclectic and multidisciplinary perspective. In this respect, the book covers diverse areas ranging from entrepreneurial collaboration for sustainable micro progress, gender sensitive statistics to democratic governance through credible elections. Other areas include harmonization of tradition and modernity in the chieftaincy institution, integration of ECOWAS statistical systems, space science and satellite technology, oil and gas exploration, construction of poverty profiles, religion, and the cocoa industry. Every section of the book is filled with leadership lessons to inspire a new development approach and intellectual assertiveness. This very penetrating book fills an important knowledge gap between theory and experiential learning in the development process. It is a melting pot of lessons for all readers.

Book The Demography of Africa

Download or read book The Demography of Africa written by Bloomsbury Publishing and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1996-11-25 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written lucidly and simply to serve as an introduction to the study of the African continent from a human population perspective, this book demonstrates important factors in the ebb and flow of group size and structure using the example of the fastest growing region in the world. From a total original population of less than a quarter million in prehistoric times to the present count of 642 million people in 1990, Africa is now demonstrating an annual growth rate of 3.0%, the highest on the planet. While the rest of the world's population is expected to increase by 60%, Africa's is expected to increase by 100%, doubling by the year 2025 to a projected total of 1.6 billion people. The major factor creating the high growth rate is the drop in death rates while the fertility rates remain high. Stress on the population has been related to urbanization which has increased since African countries attained independence in the 1960s. Employment opportunities in cities are inadequate and slum conditions have appeared around most major cities. Since agriculture remains the major industry and occupation, rural development policies are seen to hold the most promise for stemming urban migration and reducing famine and poverty.
