This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers published in this book were presented and dis cussed on occasion of the celebration of Albert Kervyn de Lettenhove's retirement on 29-30 May 1986. This conference was made feasible through the participation of a large au dience and the generous financial support of the Commission of the European Communities. The sessions were organised under three topics, as are the papers in this book. The first session, chaired by Massimo Russo, Director-General, Commission ofthe European Com munities was devoted to an evaluation of past and current debates of central macro-economic problems, those of growth and business cycle stabilization. The second session, chaired by Jean Godeaux, Governor of Belgium's National Bank, looked at innovations in the conduct of monetary pol icy and the opportunities offered and problems associated with innovations in fiancial markets. The last session, chaired by Baron Michel Woitrin, formerly Professor of Eco nomics and Head Administrator of the Universite Catholi que de Louvain, contains several empirical analyses and pol icy proposals. I 30 years ago growth theory was a very promising research field, at the center of macroeconomics and macroeconomics was at the center of economics. Robert Solow -one of the major contributors to growth theory -reexamines the perti nence of that body of theory to problems of our times. A. Steinherr and D. Download or read book Resister written by Bruce Dancis and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2014-02-25 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bruce Dancis arrived at Cornell University in 1965 as a youth who was no stranger to political action. He grew up in a radical household and took part in the 1963 March on Washington as a fifteen-year-old. He became the first student at Cornell to defy the draft by tearing up his draft card and soon became a leader of the draft resistance movement. He also turned down a student deferment and refused induction into the armed services. He was the principal organizer of the first mass draft card burning during the Vietnam War, an activist in the Resistance (a nationwide organization against the draft), and a cofounder and president of the Cornell chapter of Students for a Democratic Society. Dancis spent nineteen months in federal prison in Ashland, Kentucky, for his actions against the draft. In Resister, Dancis not only gives readers an insider's account of the antiwar and student protest movements of the sixties but also provides a rare look at the prison experiences of Vietnam-era draft resisters. Intertwining memory, reflection, and history, Dancis offers an engaging firsthand account of some of the era’s most iconic events, including the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, the Abbie Hoffman-led "hippie invasion" of the New York Stock Exchange, the antiwar confrontation at the Pentagon in 1967, and the dangerous controversy that erupted at Cornell in 1969 involving African American students, their SDS allies, and the administration and faculty. Along the way, Dancis also explores the relationship between the topical folk and rock music of the era and the political and cultural rebels who sought to change American society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Challenges conventional thinking and top-down definitions, instead drawing on the library user's perspective to argue that the public library's most important function is providing commonplace reading materials and public space. Challenges a professional ethos about public libraries and their responsibilities to fight censorship and defend intellectual freedom. Demonstrates that the American public library has been (with some notable exceptions) a place that welcomed newcomers, accepted diversity, and constructed community since the end of the 19th century. Shows how stories that cultural authorities have traditionally disparaged- i.e. books that are not "serious"- have often been transformative for public library users.

Download or read book A Spirit of True Learning written by Matthew Jordan and published by UNSW Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Written to commemorate the University of New England's fiftieth year as an independent institution, A Spirit of True Learning tells the story of the University's early struggles, its commitment to country students and the surrounding community, its rapid growth after autonomy, its development of a strong tradition of teaching and research, and its experiences over the last decade within the context of government reform and rationalisation." "This is also the story of a unique university. Like the Australian National University, UNE was founded during the great age of Australian nation-building and Keynesian optimism. Opened as an affiliate college of the University of Sydney in 1938, New England became autonomous in 1954. Its founders saw it as a deliberate attempt to bring the special advantages and the special problems of rural life in Australia under the spotlight of higher learning."--BOOK JACKET.

Download or read book The Chequered Past written by David Anderson Charters and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the forty-year period between 1951 and 1991, Canadian sports car competition underwent a massive change, transforming itself from an amateur recreational pastime to a commercialized profession and from an individual sport to a spectacle for mass consumption. The Chequered Past is the story of the struggle over power and purpose within the Canadian auto sport that led to this transformation. The first comprehensive history of sports car racing and rallying in Canada, The Chequered Past traces the efforts of the national governing body - the Canadian Auto Sport Clubs (CASC) - to bring its sports car competition up to a 'world class' level, and to manage the consequences of those efforts in the second half of the twentieth century. David Charters traces the social origins of the sport and the major trends that shaped it: professionalism, technological change, rising costs, and the influence of commercial sponsors. Charters argues that while early enthusiasts set the sport on a course toward professionalism that would eventually produce world-class Canadian events and racers, that course would also ultimately change the purpose of the sport: from personal recreation to mass entertainment. As technological innovations drove up the costs of competing at the top ranks, racers were forced to rely on sponsors, who commercialized and ultimately gained control of the sport. The end result, Charters argues, was the marginalization of the amateur competitor and of the CASC itself. Based on extensive research into the CASC's records and dozens of interviews with former competitors and officials, The Chequered Past opens a window into the rich but virtually unknown history of the auto sport, and claims for it a place in Canadian sports history.
