Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifth edition of the Glossary of Geology contains nearly 40,000 entries, including 3.600 new terms and nearly 13,000 entries with revised definitions from the previous edition. In addition to definitions, many entries include background information and aids to syllabication. The Glossary draws its authority from the expertise of more than 100 geoscientists in many specialties who reviewed definitions and added new terms.

Download or read book Glossary of Geology written by Robert Latimer Bates and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third edition of the Glossary of Geology contains approximately 37,000 terms, or 1,000 more than the second edition, as well as 650 emendations and corrections. In addition, it includes for the first time the division of cited terms in syllables, with accents to aid in pronunciation. Approximately 150 references have been added to the 2,000 in the second edition. Literature cited ranges from the early 1790s to 1986. New entries are especially numerous in the fields of carbonate sedimentology, hydrogeology, marine geology, mineralogy, ore deposits, plate tectonics, snow and ice, and stratigraphic nomenclature. Many of the definitions provide background information. Thus the reader will learn the difference between sylvanite and sylvinite, and many other look-alike pairs; the origin of such terms as charnockite and lottal; the meaning of BHP, LVL, MORB, and more than 100 other abbreviations now common in the geoscience vocabulary; and the dates when many terms were first used, the meaning of certain common prefixes, and the preferred term of two or more synonyms. The authority of this new edition - like that of its predecessors - rests on the expertise of geoscientists from many specialties, who have reviewed definitions, added new terms, and cited references. Their contributions make the Glossary an essential reference work for all in the geoscience community. Printed on recycled, acid-free paper.

Download or read book Phosphate Minerals written by J.O. Nriagu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature on the geology, chemistry, and biochemistry of phosphorus generally takes its mineralogy for granted. The in cidental information on phosphate minerals given in these texts is often obsolescent and inaccurate. The few mineralogical texts that have dealt comprehensively with the phosphate minerals have now become outdated, and typically present the essential information in a manner unsuitable for nongeological readers. This volume is intended as a ready reference for workers who require good basic information on phosphate minerals or their synthetic equivalents. The topics covered should appeal to geologists and geochemists, lithologists, environmental scientists and engineers, chemists and biochemists who have any interest in the intricate world of phosphorus. The hard tissues of many vertebrates and the many pathological calcifications consist mostly of phosphate minerals. The precipita tion of these compounds also plays a major role in the ecological cycling of phosphorus, and occasionally even dominates the behavior of many trace metals in many geochemical and biolog ical systems. Indeed, many pegmatitic phosphate minerals have acquired some notoriety because of the rarer trace metals which they tend to accumulate. With the commercialization of phosphate fertilizers since the early part of the 19th century, phosphate minerals have assumed an important role in industrial chemistry and agriculture. Clearly, the study of phosphate minerals is important from the economic, agricultural, environmental and (human and animal) health viewpoint.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 5 of Reviews in Mineralogy emphasizes the crystal chemistry and related physical properties of the major rock-forming orthosilicates. Though in some chapters more attention is given to phase equilibria and paragenesis than in others, these are for the most part cursorily treated with references to the more important papers and to review articles (also see Deer, Howie and Zussman, 1962, Rock-forming Minerals, Vol. 1, Ortho- and Ring Silicates).
