Book Family Class and Ideology in Early Industrial France

Download or read book Family Class and Ideology in Early Industrial France written by Katherine A. Lynch and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Katherine Lynch's study of the French state's response to a crisis of working-class families illustrates a new sophistication in our understanding of the complex origins of social policy. She looks at middle-class reformers' formulation of social policy affecting illegitimacy, child abandonment, and child labor and examines the implementation of these policies in three major factory towns--Lille, Mulhouse, and Rouen--in the quarter century before the revolution of 1848. . . . This is a most valuable book that seeks to understand both the politics of reform and the ways in which reformist policies change in the process of implementation. It presents a sophisticated exploration of important issues."--Journal of Economic History

Download or read book Orphans and Abandoned Children in European History written by Nicoleta Roman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-08 with total page 469 pages. Over the centuries, State, Church and individuals have all attempted to tackle the issue, but can we trace any change over the course of time when it comes to the welfare system intended for these disadvantaged children and acts of philanthropy? What kind of social policies did States follow and what were the main differences between countries and regions? Drawing on historical evidence across several centuries and a range of European countries, the contributors to this volume provide a transnational overview.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its founding, Martinique played an integral role in France's Atlantic empire. Established in the mid-seventeenth century as a colonial outpost against Spanish and English dominance in the Caribbean, the island was transformed by the increase in European demand for sugar, coffee, and indigo. Like other colonial subjects, Martinicans met the labor needs of cash-crop cultivation by establishing plantations worked by enslaved Africans and by adopting the rigidly hierarchical social structure that accompanied chattel slavery. After Haiti gained its independence in 1804, Martinique's economic importance to the French empire increased. At the same time, questions arose, both in France and on the island, about the long-term viability of the plantation system, including debates about the ways colonists—especially enslaved Africans and free mixed-race individuals—fit into the French nation. Sweet Liberty chronicles the history of Martinique from France's reacquisition of the island from the British in 1802 to the abolition of slavery in 1848. Focusing on the relationship between the island's widely diverse society and the various waves of French and British colonial administrations, Rebecca Hartkopf Schloss provides a compelling account of Martinique's social, political, and cultural dynamics during the final years of slavery in the French empire. Schloss explores how various groups—Creole and metropolitan elites, petits blancs, gens de couleur, and enslaved Africans—interacted with one another in a constantly shifting political environment and traces how these interactions influenced the colony's debates around identity, citizenship, and the boundaries of the French nation. Based on extensive archival research in Europe and the Americas, Sweet Liberty is a groundbreaking study of a neglected region that traces how race, slavery, class, and gender shaped what it meant to be French on both sides of the Atlantic.

Book Children Poverty and Nationalism in Lithuania 1900 1940

Download or read book Children Poverty and Nationalism in Lithuania 1900 1940 written by Andrea Griffante and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-05 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the emergence of care for orphaned, abandoned and poor children in Lithuania from the early twentieth century to the beginning of the Second World War. In particular, it focuses on how such practices were influenced by nationalist and political discourses, and how orphanages became privileged institutions for nation building. Emerging during the humanitarian crisis following the First World War, the Lithuanian orphaned and destitute children’s assistance network had an eminently ethno-national character, and existed in parallel with, and was challenged by, Polish poor child assistance institutions. By analysing such care for children, this book explores concepts such as the nation state and citizenship, as well as the connections between poverty, childhood and nationalism.
