Book The Jews of Windsor 1790 1990

Download or read book The Jews of Windsor 1790 1990 written by Jonathan V. Plaut and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 2007-05-30 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with the first Jewish settler, Moses David, the important role that Windsor Jews played in the development of Ontario’s south is mirrored in this 200-year chronicle. the founding pioneer families transformed their Eastern European shtetl into a North American settlement; many individuals were involved in establishing synagogues, schools, and an organized communal structure in spite of divergent religious, political, and economic interests. Modernity and the growing influences of Zionism and Conservative/Reform Judaism challenged the traditional and leftist leanings of the community’s founders. From the outset, Jews were represented in city council, actively involved in communal organizations, and appointed to judicial posts. While its Jewish population was small, Windsor boasted Canada’s first Jewish Cabinet members, provincially and federally, in David Croll and Herb Gray. As the new millennium approached, jews faced shrinking numbers, forcing major consolidations in order to ensure their survival.

Book excerpt: "Racism, Eh? is the first publication that examines racism within the broad Canadian context. This anthology brings together some of the visionaries who are seeking to illuminate the topics of race and racism in Canada through the analysis of historical and contemporary issues, which address race and racism as both material and psychic phenomena. Fundamentally interdisciplinary in nature, this text will be an invaluable resource for undergraduate and graduate students, academics studying or practicing within the Humanities and the Social Sciences, and anyone seeking information on what has been a little explored and poorly understood Canadian issue."--pub. desc.

Book The Journey from Tollgate to Parkway

Download or read book The Journey from Tollgate to Parkway written by Adrienne Shadd and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 2010-12-14 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Lincoln Alexander Parkway was named, it was a triumph not only for this distinguished Canadian, but for all African Canadians, It had indeed been a long journey from the days in the 1880s when a Blacks woman named Julia Berry operated one of the tollgates leading up to Hamilton Mountain. The Journey from Tollgate to Parkway examines the history of Blacks in the Hamilton-Wentworth area, from their status as slaves in Upper Canada to their settlement and development of community, their struggle for justice and equality, and their achievements, presented in a fascinating and meticulously researched historical narrative. Adrienne Shadd's original research offers new insights into urban Black history, filling in gaps on the background of families and individuals, while also exploding stereotypes of poverty and underachievement of early Black Hamiltonians. For the very first time, their contributions to the building and development of the city are heralded and take centre stage.

Book The Court of Queen s Bench of Manitoba 1870 1950

Download or read book The Court of Queen s Bench of Manitoba 1870 1950 written by Dale Brawn and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2006-12-15 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of the Manitoba judiciary is not only the first biographical history to examine an entire provincial bench, it is also one of the first studies to offer an internal view of the political nature of the judicial appointment process. Dale Brawn has penned the biographies of the first thirty-three men appointed to Manitoba's Court of Queen's Bench. The relative youth of Manitoba as a province and the small size of its legal profession makes possible an exceptionally detailed investigation of the background of those appointed to the province's highest trial court. The biographical data that Brawn has collected for this book highlights the extent to which judicial candidates underwent a socialization process designed to produce a legal elite whose members shared remarkably similar views and ways of thinking. In addition, these biographies suggest that until at least 1950, seats on provincial benches were rewards for political services rendered. Many lawyers became judges not because of their legal ability, but because they had made themselves known in the communities in which they practiced. This fascinating study offers an intimate look at personalities ranging from prime ministers to members of the bench and both senior levels of government.

Book In the Shadow of Detroit

Download or read book In the Shadow of Detroit written by David Roberts and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Roberts intertwines McGregor's corporate, civic, and personal lives to trace his pioneering role in the automobile industry. Some themes from McGregor's career that are considered here include company growth, the technical and cultural concept of the automobile, the impact of automotive transportation, technological reliance on Detroit, parent-branch relations, the effects of border proximity, industrial and political lobbying, labor relations, secondary manufacturing, public involvement, and the Great War. In addition, Roberts probes McGregor's often-subservient relationship with the enigmatic Henry Ford and examines how McGregor drew praise and political ire in calling for regional governance in the "Border Cities" opposite Detroit. In the years before his premature death, McGregor and his company dominated and defined the growing automotive industry in Windsor-Detroit, and their story deserves to be more widely known.".
