Book excerpt: Imagine the presumably pacifist Quaker physician surviving the wilds of frontier Louisiana only to see his descendants marry into families of battle-hardened warriors. One survived being bayoneted nine times in the Revolutionary War; one was tomahawked to death in the Indian Wars, and his heart was eaten by the redskins to carry on his bravery; brothers served as Andrew Jackson’s aides-de-camp at the Battle of New Orleans; and one was a seventeen-year-old marching off to the Civil War with his slave by his side. For a storyteller, this family is fertile ground, and for the reader, it is fascinating.
Download or read book Martha Maxwell Rocky Mountain Naturalist written by Maxine Benson and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ?See, there she is!? cried one visitor to the Centennial Exposition. ?Just think! She killed all them animals,? echoed another. ?There, that?s her!? All during the hot Philadelphia summer of 1876, throngs of people pushed and shoved their way into the Kansas-Colorado Building, eager to catch a glimpse of the small, dark-haired woman responsible for creating the extraordinary display of bears, deer, and other mammals cavorting over a Rocky Mountain landscape. Curious, skeptical, friendly?on and on they came, until the policemen stationed at the doors were hard-pressed to maintain control. The fairgoers were intent on seeing for themselves the ?modern Diana? who had come all the way from the wilds of Colorado. Maxine Benson?s finely crafted biography of Martha Maxwell illuminates the little-known but important career of a remarkable woman. Naturalist, taxidermist, museologist, artist?Maxwell pioneered in a number of fields new for women. Born in Pennsylvania in 1831 and educated in the Midwest, she traveled to the gold fields of Colorado with her husband in 1860. A chance encounter with a German taxidermist determined her lifework, and Maxwell soon devoted her boundless energy to hunting and mounting all forms of Rocky Mountain wildlife, which she displayed in unusual habitat settings in her museum in Boulder and later in Denver. Her spreading fame led to an invitation to exhibit her collection at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition, where she achieved international renown. As Maxwell?s major scientific and artistic contributions to natural history taxidermy and display were recognized, her influence carried to the Smithsonian Institution. Separated from her husband and alienated from her daughter, however, she became increasingly unhappy as her professional accomplishments grew. Her tragic and lonely death in 1881 revealed something of the price she paid for daring to be different. Like that of other accomplished women of her era, Maxwell?s fame did not keep pace with the significant influence she had on her profession. Thanks to Maxine Benson, Martha Maxwell now takes her rightful place in the history of the West and of the nation.

Download or read book Dictionary Of British And Irish Botantists And Horticulturalists Including plant collectors flower painters and garden designers written by Ray Desmond and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-12-23 with total page 866 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past four centuries botanists and gardeners in the British Isles have gathered, maintained and propagated many varying species of plants. Their work has been documented in innumerable books and articles which are often difficult to trace. The Dictionary of British and Irish Botanists and Horticulturalists represents a time-saving reference source for those who wish to discover more about the lives and achievements of the horticulturalists listed. The dictionary's utility comes not only from indicating the major publications of the named authors, but also the location of their herbaria and manuscripts.; The previous 1977 edition of the Dictionary has for many years been a much used source of information for botanists, botanic artists and archivists. In this revised edition the scope has been expanded to include among its 13,000 entries flower painters in addition to botanical artists over 1400 entries and, for the first time, garden designers.; Finally the Dictionary should have international appeal since so many botanists and gardeners worked on collective plants overseas, in particular in North America and the British Commonwealth.; Each entry gives, wherever possible, details of dates and places of birth and death, educational qualifications, professional posts, honours and awards, publications, location of plant collections, manuscripts, drawings and portraits. Its main function, however, is to provide further biographical references to books and periodicals. Comprehensive classified indices facilitate access by professions and activities, countries, and plant interests.

Download or read book The History of the Harwood Families of Darwen Lancashire written by Michael Harwood and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-11-22 with total page 738 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives an insight into how our Lancashire ancestors lived and interacted with the environment in which they existed, over the centuries. Apart from a general history of Darwen life, this volume covers not only the very first ancestral tree but follows the story of one particular family branch through to the twentieth century and into living memory. The story includes detailed information of many other families which whom the Harwoods have intermingled over the centuries, and it would be a rare Darwener, who could not find some connection to his own ancestors within these pages. “Enthusiasm, in-depth research, and a unique authorial voice: this book is what genealogy should result in. It locates the Harwood family in a specific historical place and then watches them grow up and move out. Family journeys are explored from the paper mills of Kent to the goldfields of Ballarat and Maori massacres. “The sheer numbers of documents illustrated show both their value as evidence and the breadth of Mike’s research. There are fruitful and informative diversions into work, leisure, and religion, with excursions into the history of education, nonconformity, and workhouses, among many other things. It’s a story of Lancashire, and a Lancashire in the world. And it’s hard to argue with its announcement of itself not as a history but as the history of the Lancashire Harwoods. They are both typical and unique, and in tracing the development of Lancashire from a rural to an industrial economy, Mike never loses focus on his ancestors’ place in it.” —Neil Sayer, archive access manager, Lancashire Archives
