Book excerpt: The First Census of the United States (1790) comprised an enumeration of the inhabitants of the present states of Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, and Virginia. Unfortunately, during the War of 1812, when the British burned the Capitol at Washington, the returns for several states were destroyed, including those for Virginia, of which Kentucky was a part. In 1940, this "First Census" of Kentucky: 1790, was published, being developed from tax lists from the nine counties which comprised the entire State in 1790. Individuals are listed alphabetically, and following each name is the county of residence and the date of the return. The cumulative returns for Kentucky are included on page one. Also included at the end of the book are the "Land and Tax List of King George County [VA], 1782;" "Personal Tax List of Fayette County, 1788;" "Personal Tax List No. 2 of Fayette County, 1787;" "Land Tax List of Prince William County [VA], 1784;" and the "Land Tax List of Charles City County, 1787." They were the parents of four children: Marean, Sarah Price, Priscilla and Thomas Hickison. Their son Marean married Elizabeth West of Montgomery Co. in 1788 in Baltimore Co., MD and moved to Kentucky by 1799. The only other Mockbee men that were in Frederick Co., MD during the 1771-1780 period were James and Jeremiah Mockbee. They located in Bracken Co., KY. It is believed that Henson Mockbee and Hickerson Mockbee were their sons. By 1830, they were living in Brown Co., Ohio. Several generations of descendants are given.

Established in 1832 by the union of two Christian groups led by Alexander Campbell and Barton W. Stone, their descendent churches are now referred to by religious scholars as the Stone-Campbell movement. In the state’s best tradition, this historic movement soon acquired its own larger-than-life legend: Raccoon John Smith, the flamboyant frontier preacher of the southern Kentucky mountains. Smith moved to the lowland Bluegrass and braved considerable odds to preach and establish the self-described “pure, nondenominational” Christianity of Stone and Campbell throughout the state and beyond. The 1832 union of Stone and Campbell’s churches was in fact formalized not by Stone and Campbell, but by Stone together with Smith, who represented Campbell’s constituency in Kentucky.
