Download or read book The Business of Watercolour written by Simon Fenwick and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1997, this volume will revolutionise the study of watercolour painting in Britain. The Royal Watercolour Society archive constitutes a major academic resource covering two hundred years of the history of watercolour painting in Britain. The rediscovery in 1980 of ‘the Jenkins Papers’, the early records of the Society, was a major find for the history of British art. The archives are substantial and remarkably comprehensive. Minutes of annual general meetings, Council and committees, are all intact; extraordinarily, the Society’s catalogues for its own exhibitions have also survived, with details of who bought the pictures and for how much. It contains biographical information on several hundred artists who practised throughout the United Kingdom from the end of the eighteenth century to the present day. Prepared by the archivist to the RWS, Simon Fenwick, this is not just a work of reference, but an absorbing book to dip into again and again. The Society of Painters in Water Colours, as it was then titled, was founded in 1804 to promote the interests of painters using watercolour and to provide a platform for members to sell their work. As such, its archives provide an excellent insight into the evolving debate on the status of the artists and their medium, and an authoritative account of the way in which watercolour paintings were sold, distributed and acquired. The substantial introduction by Greg Smith surveys some of the purposes and practices of watercolour from 1750 to the present day and highlights key issues, many yet to be examined, relating to the study of watercolour. His survey is arranged around a number of topics including the notion of watercolour as a British art, collecting and display, book illustration, architectural drawing, map-making and topography, antiquarian studies, decorative arts, printmaking, portrait miniatures and drawings, amateur practices and the changing status of the sketch.

Download or read book On this Island written by Billy Morrow Jackson and published by Sports Publishing LLC. This book was released on 2005 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the ferry leaves Woods Hole and Martha's Vineyard slowly rises on the horizon, something inside you changes. The air is cleaner, the sky seems more blue and the water clearer. Then you realize it is not the water or the air or the sky that change, but that something inside you changes as you leave the mainland and draw closer to the Island. Martha's Vineyard may be just a few miles off the coast of Cape Cod, but to those who love the Island, she is world away. The Wampanoag name for the Vineyard, Noepe means Island in the Streams and comes close to capturing the essence of Martha's Vineyard. To describe Martha's Vineyard historically and geographically is easy. It was formed nearly 12,000 years ago, was first settled by the Wampanoag Indians and was discovered in 1602 by English mariner Bartholomew Gosnold. It is 100 square miles and consists of six distinct towns. But to capture the spirit of the Island is a much greater challenge. Acclaimed artists Billy Morrow Jackson, a Vineyard resident and visitor for over fifty years, and his wife, Siti Maria Jackson, provide an artist's view of this unique Island in the Streams. On this Island includes original paintings, including classic works depicting the Gay Head Cliffs and Menemsha to the down Island towns of Vineyard Haven, Oak Bluffs and Edgartown. The artists focus not only on the land that is Martha's Vineyard, but they also capture the life and spirit of the people of the Island. On this Island: An Artist's View of Martha's Vineyard offers a rare view of the Island captured by two artists who know and appreciate all that the Island is.

The drawings and watercolors in particular reflect his activity outside the portrait studio: his sojourns in Spain, Morocco and elsewhere in North Africa, and in the Middle East; his enduring fascination with Venice; his holidays in the Italian lake district and the Alps; his tours of North America, including Florida and the Rocky Mountains; his visit as an official war artist to the western front in 1918; and his work as a muralist at the Boston Public Library, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and Harvard University's Widener Library."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Download or read book The Complete Catalogue of Known and Documented Work by William Merritt Chase 1849 1916 written by Ronald G. Pisano and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first in a beautiful four-volume complete catalogue of all known works by the beloved American artist William Merritt Chase A perennial favorite of museum visitors, the works of William Merritt Chase (1849-1916) embody the quintessential characteristics of American Impressionism: outdoor landscapes, a colorful palette, and an energetic brushstroke. He was also a portrait painter of the first rank, a master of still life, a renowned teacher, and a leader of artists' societies. This gorgeous book, the first of a four-volume definitive catalogue, features Chase's stunning paintings in pastel, which constitute a major and previously understudied body of work by the artist; monotypes; painted tiles and plates; watercolors; and prints. Reconstructing Chase's oeuvre is a daunting task, as the artist left few records of any kind, and no documentation of his individual works exists. Furthermore, Chase's paintings and pastels have been forged in great numbers throughout the years, and many of these works still surface on the art market. Making this long-awaited volume even more valuable is a list of every known exhibition of Chase's work during the artist's lifetime, selected examples of major post-1917 exhibitions, and an essay on Chase's innovative pastel technique.
