Much has been written on the Great Ejection, but nothing is more important than to hear the ejected speak for themselves. Book The Tragedy of 1662

Download or read book The Tragedy of 1662 written by Lee Gatiss and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these days of spiritual ignorance in the country and doctrinal laxity in the church, many Anglicans look back to former times with a certain degree of wistfulness. One date lingers in the collective Anglican memory as suggestive of a golden era: 1662. Yet 1662 was not a good year for those to whom the gospel and a good conscience were more precious than the institutional church. Hundreds of 'evangelical' puritan ministers were forced to leave the Church of England. Persecution of "dissenters" such as Richard Baxter, John Bunyan, and John Owen continued for a quarter of a century as they were banned from preaching and their like-minded congregations forbidden to meet. This study examines the reasons for the Great Ejection and Persecution, and the things modern day Anglicans and Free Churches can learn from these easily neglected events. Lee Gatiss is Associate Minister of St. Helen's, Bishopsgate in the City of London and Editor of The Theologian: The Internet Journal for Integrated Theology at www.theologian.org.uk. Having read Modern History at New College, Oxford and trained for Anglican ministry at Oak Hill Theological College he completed a curacy in Northamptonshire before moving to London. He is a member of the Latimer Trust Theological Work Group and the Editorial Board of the journal Churchman.

Book The Godly Home Introduction by J I Packer

Download or read book The Godly Home Introduction by J I Packer written by Richard Baxter and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2010-01-08 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In twenty-first century America, at a time when the family structure is crumbling, divorce rates are at an all-time high, and respect for parents is diminishing, The Godly Home serves as a balm for those seeking God's plan for the family. With an introduction by J. I. Packer, this book includes topics for those passionate about families or those teaching on the characteristics of a godly family. Richard Baxter covers topics such as marriage, children, and family worship methodically and comprehensively through both hypothetical and real-life questions and concerns that arise in family dynamics. He uses arguments, objections, and frequent Scripture to help husbands, wives, and children to live godly lives. More than three centuries ago, Puritan church leader Baxter compiled a 1,143-page tome entitled Christian Directory, which included a section on family life. The Godly Home is the only stand-alone version of that section of Christian Directory. Editor Randall Pederson has updated the language and syntax to make this seventeenth-century collection of words one that will continue on for generations to come.

Book Puritans and Puritanism in Europe and America 2 volumes

Download or read book Puritans and Puritanism in Europe and America 2 volumes written by Francis J. Bremer and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2005-12-19 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This exhaustive treatment of the Puritan movement covers its doctrines, its people, its effects on politics and culture, and its enduring legacy in modern Britain and America. Puritanism began in the 1530s as a reform movement within the Church of England. It endured into the 18th century. In between, it powerfully influenced the course of political events both in Britain and in the United States. Puritanism shaped the American colonies, particularly New England. It was a key ingredient in literature, from authors as diverse as John Milton and Nathaniel Hawthorne. Although Puritanism as a formal movement has been gone for more than 300 years, its influence continues on the mores and norms of America and Britain. This ambitious work contains nearly 700 entries covering people, events, ideas, and doctrines—the whole of Puritanism. Exhaustive and authoritative, it draws on the work of more than 80 leading scholars in the field. Impeccable scholarship combines with eminent readability to make this a valuable work for all readers and researchers from secondary school up.

Book Anglicans and Puritans

Download or read book Anglicans and Puritans written by Peter Lake and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-05 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1988, this was the first full and scholarly account of the formal Elizabethan and Jacobean debates between Presbyterians and conformists concerning the government of the church. This book shed new light on the crucial disagreements between puritans and conformists and the importance of these divisions for political processes within both the church and wider society. The originality and complexity of Richard Hooker’s thought is discussed and the extent to which Hooker redefined the essence of English Protestantism. The book will be of interest to historians of the late 16th and 17th Centuries and to those interested in church history and the development of Protestantism.
