This book was released on 2019-10-28 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents innovative research on soil nitrogen cycling and nitrate leaching with a view to improving soil management and fertiliser nitrogen use efficiency and reducing nitrogen leaching losses. In this regard, nitrogen-15 (15N)-labelled fertiliser was used as a biochemical and physical stable isotope tracer in laboratory and field experiments. The major outcome of the research was the development, validation and application of a new compound-specific amino acid 15N stable isotope probing method for assessing the assimilation of fertiliser nitrogen by soil microbial biomass. The novelty of the method lies in its tracing of incorporated nitrogen into newly biosynthesised microbial protein in time-course experiments using gas chromatography-combustion-isotope ratio mass spectrometry. The approach provides previously unattainable insights into the microbial processing of different nitrogen fertilisers in different soils. Further, it identifies the mechanistic link between molecular-scale processes and observations of field-scale fertiliser nitrogen immobilisation studies. The method and the results presented here will have far-reaching implications for the development of enhanced recommendations concerning farm-based soil management practices for increasing soil productivity and reducing nitrogen losses, which is essential to minimising environmental impacts.

Download or read book Soil Nitrogen Uses and Environmental Impacts written by Rattan Lal and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nitrogen (N) is potentially one of the most complex elements on the Earth. It is necessary for all biological activity, but creates negative impacts on water and air quality. There is a balancing act between deficiency and surplus and the forms of N available further complicate our understanding of the dynamics. Biological fixation provides some plants with N supply while others are totally dependent upon N being available in the soil profile for the roots to extract. Nevertheless, the demand for N will increase because the human population with its increasing growth requires more protein and thus more N. Understanding the global N cycle is imperative to meeting current and future nitrogen demands while decreasing environmental impacts. This book discusses availability, production, and recycling of N in air, water, plants, and soils. It features information on N impacts to soil and water quality, management of N in agroecosystems, and techniques to maximize the use efficiency while minimizing the risks of leakage of reactive N into the environment. This volume in the Advances in Soil Science series is specifically devoted to availability, production, and recycling of N with impact on climate change and water quality, and management of N in agroecosystems in the context of maximizing the use efficiency and minimizing the risks of leakage of reactive N (NO-3, N¬2O) into the environment.

Download or read book Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy written by Frank A. Bovey and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1988-11-01 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy, Second Edition focuses on two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, high resolution NMR of solids, water suppression, multiple quantum spectroscopy, and NMR imaging. The selection first takes a look at the fundamental principles and experimental methods. Discussions focus on the NMR phenomenon, dipolar broadening and spin-spin relaxation, nuclear electric quadrupole relaxation, saturation, magnetic shielding and chemical shift, magnetic field, transitions between the nuclear energy levels, and resolution and sensitivity considerations. The manuscript then ponders on chemical shift, coupling of nuclear spins, and nuclear relaxation and chemical rate processes. Topics include spin lattice relaxation, spin-spin relaxation, spin decoupling and associated techniques, and description and analysis of spin systems. The text examines two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy, macromolecules, and NMR of solids, including magic angle spinning, cross polarization, proton dipolar broadening, biopolymers, and chain motion in macromolecules. The selection is a valuable source of data for readers interested in nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the years since NMR was first applied to solve problems in structural biology, it has undergonedramaticdevelopmentsinbothNMRinstrumenthardwareandmethodology. While it is established that NMR is one of the most powerful tools for understanding biological p- cesses at the atomic level, it has become increasingly difficult for authors and instructors to make valid decisions concerning the content and level for a graduate course of NMR in str- turalbiology. BecausemanyofthedetailsinpracticalNMRarenotdocumentedsystematically, students entering the field have to learn the experiments and methods through communication with other experienced students or experts. Often such a learning process is incomplete and unsystematic. This book is meant to be not only a textbook, but also a handbook for those who routinely use NMR to study various biological systems. Thus, the book is organized with experimentalists in mind, whether they are instructors or students. For those who have a little or no background in NMR structural biology, it is hoped that this book will provide sufficient perspective and insight. Those who are already experienced in NMR research may find new information or different methods that are useful to their research. Because understanding fundamental principles and concepts of NMR spectroscopy is essential for the application of NMR methods to research projects, the book begins with an introduction to basic NMR principles. While detailed mathematics and quantum mechanics dealing with NMR theory have been addressed in several well-known NMR books, Chapter 1 illustrates some of the fundamental principles and concepts of NMR spectroscopy in a more descriptiveandstraightforwardmanner.
