Book Philosophy of Physics

Download or read book Philosophy of Physics written by Jeremy Butterfield and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2007 with total page 1481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ambition of this volume is twofold: to provide a comprehensive overview of the field and to serve as an indispensable reference work for anyone who wants to work in it. For example, any philosopher who hopes to make a contribution to the topic of the classical-quantum correspondence will have to begin by consulting Klaas Landsman's chapter. The organization of this volume, as well as the choice of topics, is based on the conviction that the important problems in the philosophy of physics arise from studying the foundations of the fundamental theories of physics. It follows that there is no sharp line to be drawn between philosophy of physics and physics itself. Some of the best work in the philosophy of physics is being done by physicists, as witnessed by the fact that several of the contributors to the volume are theoretical physicists: viz., Ellis, Emch, Harvey, Landsman, Rovelli, 't Hooft, the last of whom is a Nobel laureate. Key features - Definitive discussions of the philosophical implications of modern physics - Masterly expositions of the fundamental theories of modern physics - Covers all three main pillars of modern physics: relativity theory, quantum theory, and thermal physics - Covers the new sciences grown from these theories: for example, cosmology from relativity theory; and quantum information and quantum computing, from quantum theory - Contains special Chapters that address crucial topics that arise in several different theories, such as symmetry and determinism - Written by very distinguished theoretical physicists, including a Nobel Laureate, as well as by philosophers - Definitive discussions of the philosophical implications of modern physics - Masterly expositions of the fundamental theories of modern physics - Covers all three main pillars of modern physics: relativity theory, quantum theory, and thermal physics - Covers the new sciences that have grown from these theories: for example, cosmology from relativity theory; and quantum information and quantum computing, from quantum theory - Contains special Chapters that address crucial topics that arise in several different theories, such as symmetry and determinism - Written by very distinguished theoretical physicists, including a Nobel Laureate, as well as by philosophers

Book Einstein s Unfinished Symphony

Download or read book Einstein s Unfinished Symphony written by Marcia Bartusiak and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2017-06-27 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This updated edition of the New York Times Notable Book recounts the long hunt for Einstein’s predicted gravitational waves—and celebrates their discovery. In February 2016, astronomers announced that they had verified the last remaining prediction of Einstein’s general theory of relativity—vibrations in space-time, called gravitational waves. Humanity can now tune in to a cosmic orchestra. We have heard the chirp of two black holes dancing toward a violent union. We will hear the cymbal crashes from exploding stars, the periodic drumbeats from swiftly rotating pulsars, and maybe even the echoes from the Big Bang itself. More than a decade earlier, Marcia Bartusiak chronicled the gamble taken by astronomers who were determined to prove Einstein right. In their quest to detect gravitational waves, they built the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) detectors, the most accurate measuring devices ever created. In this updated edition, Bartusiak brings the story to a thrilling close with the triumphant discovery of gravitational waves made with the LIGO. "An important, multifaceted scientific story…part theoretical physics, part astronomy, part experimental physics, part engineering."—James Ryerson, New York Times Book Review

Download or read book Eighth Marcel Grossmann Meeting The On Recent Developments In Theoretical And Experimental General Relativity Gravitation And Relativistic Field Theories Proceedings Of The Meeting In 2 Parts written by Tsvi Piran and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1999-05-14 with total page 1776 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1975, the Marcel Grossmann Meetings have been organized to provide opportunities for discussing recent advances in gravitation, general relativity and relativistic field theories, emphasizing mathematical foundations, physical predictions and experimental tests. The objective of these meetings is to facilitate exchange among scientists that may deepen our understanding of space-time structures and to review the status of ongoing experiments aimed at testing Einstein's theory of gravitation from either the ground or space. The Eighth Marcel Grossmann Meeting took place on 22-27 June, 1997, at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel. The scientific program included 25 plenary talks and 40 parallel sessions during which 400 papers were presented. The papers that appear in this book cover all aspects of gravitation, from mathematical issues to recent observations and experiments.

Book Omnidirectional Gravitational Radiation Observatory Proceedings Of The First International Workshop

Download or read book Omnidirectional Gravitational Radiation Observatory Proceedings Of The First International Workshop written by Walter Ferreira Velloso Jr and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1997-08-12 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gravitational wave detection is certainly one of the most challenging goals for today's physics. For three decades detectors have improved in sensitivity in order to confirm the existence of these waves, which are predicted by general relativity and other theories of gravitation. Besides testing these theories themselves the detection of gravitational waves will open a new window to observe the Universe — gravitational astronomy — which will be responsible for a great number of the new discoveries in physics, astrophysics and cosmology, and major technological advances in the next millennium. The last generation of detectors is under study now, and it will probably consist of several antennas sensitive to all directions, forming an “omnidirectional gravitational radiation observatory”. This book is a compilation of the papers presented at a recent workshop for this kind of observatory. It includes original works from some of the most active physicists in the field, both experimentalists and theorists, and the present status of the different detectors around the world.

Book Gravitational Waves Sources And Detectors Proceedings Of The International Conference

Download or read book Gravitational Waves Sources And Detectors Proceedings Of The International Conference written by Francesco Fidecaro and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1997-04-19 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The construction of large interferometers for gravitational wave detection is now in progress in Europe and in the United States. To stimulate theoretical and experimental work a conference was organised in Cascina (Italy), where the Virgo interferometer is being built. Review talks discussed the expected signals, covering general relativity and astrophysical aspects (binary coalescence, supernovae, neutron stars, cosmological background). Experimental talks gave the current status of the running experiments (resonant bars, prototype interferometers, satellite tracking) and of the planned ones (large interferometers, ultra cryogenic resonating bars and spheres, space missions).
