The exhibition will include sixty works: paintings, drawings and sculpture from the 1930s through the 1980s. max bill, 's work is rarely seen and a solo gallery exhibition has not occurred in London for nearly thirty years.Architect, sculptor, painter, typographer, draftsman, curator and professor, Bill spent his early and formative years at the Bauhaus where he studied under Klee, Kandinsky and Albers between 1927- 1929. Moving shortly thereafter to Paris, the young Bill exhibited with the group Abstraction-Creation, along with Mondrian, Brancusi and Arp. He was engaged with several British artists also affiliated with this group such as Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson, and formed a lasting friendship with Marlow Moss.He is one of the seminal figures in Concrete Art and helped to form the Allianz group in 1937, which held a strong emphasis on colour theory that Bill carried throughout his work since his time at the Bauhaus.Notable in the current exhibition are the painted works that juxtapose colours from subtle to explosive in a way that makes one entirely rethink the spectrum. Coupled with Bill's extraordinary skills of geometric abstraction, which flow especially into his sculpture, the show is a dynamic interaction with some of the core principles of 20th century art

Educated by such prominent teachers as Paul Klee, Wassily Kandisky, and Walter Gropius at the Bauhaus, at the start of his career in the 1930s. In the 1950s he teamed up with Inge Scholl and Otl Aicher to found the legendary Ulm College of Design in Ulm, Germany, of which he became the first director. In his work, Max Bill carried on the legacy of the Bauhaus, both as an artist and a teacher, and made a decisive and lasting contribution to twentieth-century cultural life. "Max Bill" accompanies an exhibition at the Museum MARTa Herford in Herford, Germany, held to mark the centenary of this exceptional artist. The exhibition displays Bill s wide-ranging work, and it also sets him in the context of his cultural milieu by featuring works by his contemporaries, such as Kurt Schwitters, Wassily Kandinsky, and Donald Judd. This book offers a number of alternative readings, and demonstrates strategic uses of figuration and abstraction across East and West. Encompassing sites of memory (including war memorials and Holocaust memorials), state, civic and corporate sculpture, as well as temporary and unexecuted projects, the book shows that persuasive advocates of figuration were to be found in the West, while in the East imaginative experiments in abstraction were proposed in the name of Social Realism. Presenting fresh insights into sculptural practice in the period between 1945 and 1968, this book brings together a wide range of authors, some of whom have never before been published in English. The facsimiled cards are slipped like bookmarks into a book by several authors on the history of the use of calling cards, the social context in which they were produced, and related historical and fictional narratives. The often unexpected graphic qualities of these personalized objects, each designed to capture an individual identity within the narrow confines of a tiny rectangle card, implicitly recount a history of taste and typographic codes in the West. But this calling card collection also lays the foundations for a microhistory of art, inspired by the Italian microstoria, or a looser narrative that breaks free from geographic contexts and historical periods. We can imagine how social networks were formed before the advent of Facebook, and how artists defined themselves in the social sphere, whether they were students or teachers, dean of the art school or museum curator, founder of a journal, firm, restaurant or political party, and so on.
