Book International Encyclopedia of Linguistics

Download or read book International Encyclopedia of Linguistics written by William J. Frawley and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2003-05-01 with total page 2218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Encyclopedia of Linguistics, 2nd Edition encompasses the full range of the contemporary field of linguistics, including historical, comparative, formal, mathematical, functional, and philosophical linguistics with special attention given to interrelations within branches of linguistics and to relations of linguistics with other disciplines. Areas of intersection with the social and behavioral sciences--ethnolinguistics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and behavioral linguistics--receive major coverage, along with interdisciplinary work in language and literature, mathematical linguistics, computational linguistics, and applied linguistics. Longer entries in the International Encyclopedia of Linguistics, ranging up to four thousand words, survey the major fields of study--for example, anthropological linguistics, history of linguistics, semantics, and phonetics. Shorter entries treat specific topics within these fields, such as code switching, sound symbolism, and syntactic features. Other short entries define and discuss technical terms used within the various subfields or provide sketches of the careers of important scholars in the history of linguistics, such as Leonard Bloomfield, Roman Jakobson, and Edward Sapir. A major portion of the work is its extensive coverage of languages and language families. From those as familiar as English, Japanese, and the Romance languages to Hittite, Yoruba, and Nahuatl, all corners of the world receive treatment. Languages that are the subject of independent entries are analyzed in terms of their phonology, grammatical features, syntax, and writing systems. Lists attached to each article on a language group or family enumerate all languages, extinct or still spoken, within that group and provide detailed information on the number of known speakers, geographical range, and degree of intelligibility with other languages in the group. In this way, virtually every known language receives coverage. For ease of reference and to aid research, the articles are alphabetically arranged, each signed by the contributor, supported by up-to-date bibliographies, line drawings, maps, tables, and diagrams, and readily accessible via a system of cross-references and a detailed index and synoptic outline. Authoritative, comprehensive, and innovative, the 2nd edition of the International Encyclopedia of Linguistics will be an indispensable addition to personal, public, academic, and research libraries and will introduce a new generation of readers to the complexities and concerns of this field of study.

Book How to Learn and Memorize Vietnamese Vocabulary

Download or read book How to Learn and Memorize Vietnamese Vocabulary written by Anthony Metivier and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-01-09 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to Learn and Memorize Vietnamese Vocabulary ... Using a Memory Palace Specifically Designed for Vietnamese (and adaptable to many other languages too) If you'd like to improve your ability to learn Vietnamese vocabulary by as much as 100%, 200%, even 300% (or more) ... using simple memory techniques that you can learn in 15-20 minutes (or less), then this may be the most important book that you will ever read. Believe it or not, it really doesn't matter if you think you have a good memory or not. The information in this book will teach you: * Why memory is like a bicycle everyone can ride (with some minor personal adjustments). * The real reason why no one should ever be squeamish about memorization or learning a language. * Why and how some of the most famous memory skills are applicable to learning any language, especially Vietnamese. * How you can easily create a "letter location" memory system based on the Vietnamese alphabet. * How to quickly and easily learn and memorize the sounds of the Vietnamese alphabet * Unique techniques that will have you literally "tuning in" on the Vietnamese language. * How to separate Vietnamese words in the most effective manner for memorization. * Two secret ways you can use relaxation to aid the memorization process. These two methods alone are worth the price of this book because they will literally eliminate your stress and apprehension as you learn Vietnamese. * And much, much more ... These techniques have been used by real language learners, most of whom previously considered themselves owners of a "bad memory," to make real strides in learning Vietnamese vocabulary. Don't worry! None of these techniques involve brain surgery! Frankly, if you can memorize a short email address or the name of a movie, then you can use this system to memorize a language as rich and diverse as Vietnamese. Plus, everything you'll learn in this book applies to every other language that shares the same alphabet with English. And with a little imagination, the ideas are easily transferable to other alphabet systems too. But there's really no time to lose. Every day that you are not using this simple vocabulary memorization system, you are literally stealing from yourself the joy of being able to read, speak and recall an abundance of Vietnamese vocabulary as you easily expand the natural abilities of your mind.

Book Asian Classics on the Victorian Bookshelf

Download or read book Asian Classics on the Victorian Bookshelf written by Alexander Bubb and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-03-14 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interest among Victorian readers in classical literature from Asia has been greatly underestimated. The popularity of the Arabian Nights and The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam is well documented. Yet this was also an era in which freethinkers consulted the Quran, in which schoolchildren were given abridgements of the Ramayana to read, in which names like 'Kalidasa' and 'Firdusi' were carved on the façades of public libraries, and in which women's book clubs discussed Japanese poetry. But for the most part, such readers were not consulting the specialist publications of scholarly orientalists. What then were the translations that catalysed these intercultural encounters? Based on a unique methodology marrying translation theory with empirical techniques developed by historians of reading, this book shines light for the first time on the numerous amateur translators or 'popularizers', who were responsible for making these texts accessible and disseminating them to the Victorian general readership. Asian Classics on the Victorian Bookshelf explains the process whereby popular translations were written, published, distributed to bookshops and libraries, and ultimately consumed by readers. It uses the working papers and correspondence of popularizers to demonstrate their techniques and motivations, while the responses of contemporary readers are traced through the pencil marginalia they left behind in dozens of original copies. In spite of their typically limited knowledge of source-languages, Asian Classics argues that popularizers produced versions more respectful of the complexity, cultural difference, and fundamental untranslatability of Asian texts than the professional orientalists whose work they were often adapting. The responses of their readers, likewise, frequently deviated from interpretive norms, and it is proposed that this combination of eccentric translators and unorthodox readers triggered 'flights of translation', whereby historical individuals can be seen to escape the hegemony of orientalist forms of knowledge.
