Book excerpt: Harriet Jarreau cannot bear the thought of the end of her marriage to Peter, who married for her substantial fortune. No longer able to tolerate an oppressive marriage, he decides to leave her. His relief at this decision is palpable even though he is aware of the luxurious life he is about to give up...unless somehow she were gone. Stephen, Harriet's nephew, is a beneficiary of her Will. He also constantly cajoles her into implementing the meager allowance she gives him as Trustee of an inheritance from his late mother. Beneath his affable facade, however, he feels a burning resentment toward her and her control over him in denying what is rightfully his. Andr, Stephen's significant other, is forbidden to enter Harriet's home because of his "disgraceful" relationship with her nephew. He despises her and reminds Stephen of the luxurious life they could enjoy if only Harriet weren't around. Katy, the housemaid, is in love with Peter. She is naive in her belief that he returns her feelings because of his occasional flattering remarks. Her disdain toward Harriet is unrestrained, and she unequivocally believes she would be the next Mrs. Jarreau if only Harriet didn't exist. Faced with these unacceptable circumstances in their lives, who will be desperate enough to escape...by a death?

Book excerpt: Thirty short short stories about twists in ephemeral truth, the way small amounts of time are dissected and put back together wrong, if at all. "Each of the stories in Ryan Werner's "Shake Away These Constant Days" ends with a sentence that's a fist to the ribs. The collection builds into repeated shots to the soft part of your guts, a beautiful pummeling. By the end of "Shake Away These Constant Days," you won't even notice the bruises, the missing teeth, the pain. You'll only want to go another round." - Sarah Rose Etter, author of "Tongue Party" "Ryan Werner's debut marks the arrival of an important new voice: quirky, world-wise, and as joyfully rambunctious as your favorite punk rock song. Listen up. You'll be glad you did." - Tom Cooper, author of "Phantasmagoria" and "Barataria"

Download or read book The Gestalts of Mind and Text written by Chanita Goodblatt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-05-13 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gestalts of Mind and Text bridges literary studies and cognitive psychology to provide a unique contribution to the field of Cognitive Literary Studies. The book presents an investigation of metaphor in poetic texts, adopting and developing empirical methods used by Gestalt Psychology, while integrating concepts informed by Gestalt Psychology. The title indicates an intellectual tradition, to be termed the Gestalt of the Mind, that begins with the Würzburg School of Psychology and its subsequent development into Gestalt Psychology, which provides a rich heritage for the field of Cognitive Literary Studies. The title further indicates an intellectual and creative tradition, to be termed the Gestalt of the Text, applied to various literary schools (Medieval, Early Modern, Modernist). Finally, the Gestalt-Interaction Theory of Metaphor delineates the potentialities for different types of readings of poetic metaphor. This book further makes three significant contributions: the first is the focus on the empirical investigation of metaphor in poetic texts; the second is the integration of the aspects of problem-solving, bidirectionality of metaphor, embodied cognition and the grotesque, in analyzing poetic texts and verbal protocols; and the third is the focus on various literary traditions, spanning languages and periods. The goal of this book is to present an interdisciplinary study of the Gestalts of Mind and Text. This will be of interest to a varied audience, including cognitive psychologists, literary scholars, researchers in aesthetics, scholars of metaphor and those with an interest in intellectual history.
Download or read book Common Worship Lectionary written by Leslie Houlden and published by SPCK. This book was released on 2024-05-16 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the Common Worship Lectionary first came into use, many short preaching aids have been published. They have ranged from brief notes to almost complete sermons. This new companion offers an understanding of some points of significance in each lection for every Sunday and for other major days. It combines the latest scholarship with the conviction that the text should address today's world, squarely facing up to the difficulties that some passages may present to modern congregations. It does not aim to provide a substitute for sermon preparation, but to stimulate reflection among those engaged in this work. This is a serious academic commentary on the readings, by scholars who are also aware of the demands and purposes of preaching. The book provides the academic background knowledge essential for interpreting the texts; does not shirk difficult questions; stimulates the prospective preacher to see new ways of reading the text; covers the Anglican variations not dealt with in American commentaries.

Download or read book Venezuela ALBA and the Limits of Postneoliberal Regionalism in Latin America and the Caribbean written by Asa K. Cusack and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-13 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive analysis of the implementation, functioning, and impact of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA), cornerstone of Venezuelan foreign policy and standard-bearer of “postneoliberal” regionalism during the “Left Turn” in Latin America and the Caribbean (1998-2016). It reveals that cooperation via ALBA’s regionalised social missions, state multinationals, development bank, People’s Trade Agreement, SUCRE virtual currency, and Petrocaribe soft-loan scheme has often been hampered by complexity and conflict between the national political economies of Ecuador, Dominica, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Antigua and Barbuda, and especially Venezuela. Shared commitments to endogenous development, autonomy within mutlipolarity, and novel sources of legitimacy are undermined by serious deficiencies in control and accountability, which stem largely from the defining influence of Venezuela’s dysfunctional economy and governance. This dual dependency on Venezuela leaves the future of ALBA hanging in the balance.

Download or read book Modern Cellular Automata written by Kendall Preston Jr. and published by Springer. This book was released on 1985-02-28 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is with great pleasure that I present this fourth vol ume in the series "Advanced Applications in Pattern Recognition." It would be difficult to find two authors better versed in the design and application of parallel image processing systems, due to both their own many years of pioneering in the field and their encyclopedic knowledge of what is going on in uni versity and industrial laboratories around the world. The monograph is unique in its parallel presentation of orthogonal and hexagonal dissections, and the wealth of graphic illustration of algorithmic procedures for processing and analyz ing images in the various known implementations of parallel im age-processing architectures. This volume should find a place on the bookshelf of every practitioner of pattern recognition, image processing, and compu ter graphics. Morton Nadler General Editor vii PREFACE This book endeavors to introduce the reader to the subject of cellular logic and cellular automata and is devoted particu larly to those parts dealing with the manipulation of pictorial data. The study of cellular automata owes much to the pioneer ing work of John von Neumann during the 1950s. Von Neumann was interested in general problems in the behavior of computing structures and was immensely impressed by the complexity and performance of the human brain, which he felt must point to wards successful designs for automatic computing machines.
