Book World s Great Bombers

Download or read book World s Great Bombers written by Christopher Chant and published by Chartwell Books. This book was released on 2005-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its first use in 1914 to bomb Zeppelin sheds to its current use as a means of enforcing peace, the bomber has become one of the world's most effective and feared weapons. In World War I bombers flew as tactical weapons on the battlefield due to its short range and lack of power. By the mid 1930s there came a major change as the bomber's capabilities were dramatically increased. Engines became more powerful, and sleek all-metal monoplanes with enclosed cockpits and internal bombloads, like the Heinkel He III and Dornier Do 17, were deployed, proving their effectiveness in the early campaigns of World War II. Yet while the Germans concentrated on tactical bombing, the Allied nations made strategic bombing a major part of their war effort. Losses were heavy as the German air defences took their toll, but by 1944 the bombing efforts by Boeing B-17s and Avro Lancasters were seriously degrading Germany's ability to wage the war. The dropping of two atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 finally turned the bomber into a weapon of grand strategic capability. Throughout the Cold War, the United States and Soviet Union produced ever more capable turbine-powered bombers, like the giant B-52 and Tupolev Tu-95 Bear, that later added missile launching to their repertoire. Today only the US can afford to continue development, production, and deployment of strategic bombers like the highly advanced B-2 Stealth aircraft. Magnificently illustrated throughout with photographs and full-color artworks, The World's Great Bombers details the development, unique features, and operational capabilities of the major bomber types. Each artwork is accompanied by the relevant technical specifications for the aircraft, including armament, powerplant, performance, and dimensions. The book provides a mass of information on one of the most decisive weapons of the last 100 years. Book jacket.

Book excerpt: At the beginning of World War I, the English were more fascinated than frightened by the gigantic, silently floating Zeppelins. Using their flashlights they sought them through the fog unthinking that they were guiding them to drop bombs over London. At Pearl Harbor the Japanese samurai damaged or destroyed all the ships on Battleship Row almost destroying the harbor's usefulness for the duration of the war. Over Ploesti, Rumania, the American Fifteenth Air Force never did succeed in destroying Hitler's primary source of oil for his tanks. Colonel Paul Tibbets pulled the Enola Gay back on her tail and aimed her skyward to take off from the carrier Hornet to bomb Tokyo. THE BOMBER BOYS is the story of all those raids and more. Author Mona Sizer is noted for her exciting scenes and careful research.

Book excerpt: Captain Stephen Wynn Vickers joined the Cheshire Regiment in August 1914, but after being badly wounded he remustered to the RFC (Royal Flying Corps). While other young pilots were killed or injured almost as soon as they got their wings, Captain Vickers survived numerous crash and forced landings. He joined 101 Squadron in 1917 and completed seventy-three sorties over enemy territory before being repatriated in May 1918 and awarded the newly inaugurated DFC, as well as the MC. With the war drawing to a close, he became a flying instructor at an RAF station in Lincolnshire, but he did not live long enough to receive either his medals or the distinction that he deserved. Making use of an array of unpublished material, including original images and information collected directly from Vickers' family, former RAF air traffic controller Joe Bamford recounts on of the final original stories of the First World War night bombers.

Book Wings That Stay on

Download or read book Wings That Stay on written by Edward V. Coggins and published by Turner Publishing Company. This book was released on 2000-05-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Preface: This book was required. As a former professor of military history at the American Military University (AMU) and a retired USAF Colonel, I wanted to teach a course on the effects of fighter aviation in war. In addition, I wanted to create a course that was a "hands-on" approach to fighter aviation history. Having flown USAF fighters for more than 20 years, I felt I had a good working knowledge of fighter aviation, but when I researched the subject I found I would have to ask my students to read scores of books to provide the background they would need. There was no "single-source" book that covered everything I wanted to cover. I determined to write that book. I wanted to write a straightforward book in plain language that would not bore fighter pilots and at the same time that would be simple enough to be attractive to laymen as well as air power historians. That is what I have done, I have covered some detailed thoughts about fighter flying in what Southern Americans might call "biscuits and gravy" language. The overriding premise of the text, is that the fighter has been the key element in the air power equation and continues in that role today although this role may be changing with the advent of good, reliable, beyond visual range air-to-air missies. This view has not been universally held over the years; however, it is a view that has been held by fighter pilots since the advent of the fighter. More and more historians are beginning to support this view. Table of Contents: World War I; Fighter Development Between Wars; The Air Wars Between World Wars; Fighter Development In World War II; The Korean War; The Fighter In The Vietnam War; The Arab-Israeli Wars; The India-Pakistani Conflicts; The Air War In The Falklands; Soviet Experience In Afghanistan; The Persian Gulf War; The Future; Summary And Conclusions.\; Appendices Definitions.
