Book 101 Single Wing Plays

Download or read book 101 Single Wing Plays written by Tom Lewis and published by Coaches Choice Books. This book was released on 2009 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coaches looking for a deceptive, powerful offense that is difficult to defend will find plenty of options in 101 Single Wing Plays. The plays are divided up into chapters based on the style of the series being run. Straight power plays are found in chapter one, while all the full spinner plays are in chapter three. Because the book is divided into chapter, the coach looking for a specific type of single wing play can easily find it and others similar to it. The diagrams found in this book are drawn up versus a very common 5-3 defense. The blocking for the most part is zone or gap zone, which allows the plays to be ran against various defenses. The player assignments are easy to follow and allow the coach to implement the play directly from the book.

Book excerpt: Following the release and huge success of my first book, I went to work testing some theories I had developed. I had experimented and played around with these concepts and schemes for a long time, but never really explored all of the variations and many possibilities they offered. This past season I got a chance to really test them, stress them, and push them to their respective limits; to see if they were sound, and more importantly, functional within the Youth Double Wing system. It was very important to me that the concepts in this book be functional and easily adapted into the system with minimal time and effort. I have found that, as youth coaches, we have very little time to install extra components. Therefore, we need to maximize our efforts toward developing a philosophy and system wherein everything we do integrates easily otherwise our ability to execute the offense at a high level will be compromised. This book is designed to be used in conjunction with my first book Youth Double Wing: A Winning Youth Offense but the concepts can be easily adapted into any offense with a series based philosophy. Obviously the main focus of the book is the use of direct snap components that have made the single wing straight series so successful throughout football history. In fact, because of their fundamental soundness, there has been a recent reemergence of these concepts at the Division I and NFL levels. From the editor Michael Moreno: "Here we see an elegant expansion of ideas previously set forth, as well as the cultivation of new ideas, and complimentary schemes - all thoroughly presented in a book designed to be read cover-to-cover or as a broad reference source. Chapters 1-7 describe fundamental and advanced concepts (I particularly like the chapters on reading and manipulating the defense to optimize play calling) relevant to all play series, while Chapters 8-16 can be approached as independent frameworks that do not need to be read in sequence. There is some redundancy in these latter chapters that is deliberate, and intended to allow the reader to view these chapters in any order. We've also included an expansive Appendix that is essentially a book within the book, rounding out a very informative body of work that any football coach will appreciate. In contributing to this effort I have learned a great deal from a master coach that has left no stone unturned in his efforts to better understand and teach what is necessary to build and sustain a successful football program. The appendices are substantive and reveal much about Jack's personal coaching philosophy as it relates to the responsibilities he assumes for the kids he trains; they offer a unique insight into his perspective on developing a team of young athletes -"Success is not always derived by having a winning season, but on how well your players develop into a team of warriors committed to a common cause." -Jack Gregory

Many coaches list alternate formations, and most of the plays can be adapted to any offensive system. And since the book features contributions from coaches in the high school, college, and pro ranks, you'll find plays that work at all levels. Football's Best Offensive Playbook is an excellent resource for: - coaches looking to add to their playlists or develop new wrinkles for existing plays, - players attempting to better understand offensive strategy and play selection, and - students of the game trying to become more knowledgeable about what makes an offense click. The book features a balance of running and passing plays organized by formation. Part I, ""Running Plays,"" features 44 inside, off-tackle, and outside plays from coaches who have established their teams as perennial title contenders through the ground game. Greats like Bob Reade (whose teams once won 63 straight games) at Augustana College, Illinois, and John McKissick (the winningest high school coach in the country) of Summerville High School, South Carolina, contribute some of their most successful plays. Part II, ""Passing Plays,"" features 45 plays designed for modern controlled passing schemes, centered around precise timing and pinpoint accuracy. The plays are divided into play action and dropback passes. Contributing to this section are such notable passing architects as Dennis Erickson of perennial national championship contender University of Miami, Tom Coughlin of the NFL expansion Jacksonville Jaguars, and LaVell Edwards of Brigham Young, who has coached such great quarterbacks as Jim McMahon, Steve Young, and Ty Detmer. Part III, ""Special Plays,"" features 13 gadgets designed to burn cheating defenses. Included are 5 reverses, 3 throwback passes, 3 PATs, and 2 trick plays. A Play Finder index lists plays by type of run (power, speed, or deception), pass (yardage needed and drop-back or roll-out), and formation. The book also features a key to symbols used in the diagrams and a glossary of important terms. Strengthen your playlist with help from many of the game's most successful coaches.
