Modeled after successful automotive books on the same theme, this book contains interesting and little-known facts about all aspects of aviation, written by a host of contributing authors, all of whom are well-respected experts in their fields. This book provides an insightful and in-depth look at aviation history by highlighting many little-known, yet very important aviation facts. More than 100 excellent photographs serve as visual highlights complementing the text. In 1903, the Wright brothers made history when they made their first motor-powered flight. Their invention was called the Wright Flyer and was the first plane to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The flight was a sensation and the Wright brothers were thrilled. However, Wilbur and Orville were unable to fly successfully. The Wright brothers were fascinated with birds' flight and spent years studying bird bodies. After his breakthrough, Giovanni Borelli proved that human muscles cannot lift the wings of an aeroplane. In 1903, Orville Wright flew the first motor-powered airplane, the Wright Flyer, which flew 120 feet in just twelve seconds. The first flight was a success, but it was not the first. But this collection of infrequently-asked questions puts the fun back into self-quizzing, encouraging you to stretch your knowledge base and go beyond the subjects learned during student pilot days. Some of Schiff's questions are for pure entertainment. Some take you right to the airport: "Q: A pilot is taxiing along a narrow taxiway at an uncontrolled airport on a cloudless day when he notices another 172 approaching from the opposite direction. Without stopping, how can both pilots be certain that their wingtips will not touch as they pass one another?" Some questions share tips from a pro; other material will spark lively discussions for hangar flying.
