It can be one of these two that decides the type of child that will be born. If born out of love the world will rejoice and if out of anger it will be distressed. The ancient Hindus were aware of this and have designed a special set of ceremonies and prayers that will welcome only great children borne out of love and happiness. Swami Ram has expertly explained the scientific procedure with the objective of changing the world into a wonderful one by asking parents to produce stalwarts and highly intelligent children that will be produced by the emotions of divinity and love.

He describes the unfolding chain of events that led up to the Battle in the Hussainiwala and provides intricate details of the battle, along with its plans. What makes this battle particularly noteworthy is that it was fought against the backdrop of the larger military defeat and debacle of East Pakistan. Determined not to fail, the tenacious troops of the 106 Brigade under Brig M. Mumtaz Khan HJ, SJ of the Frontier Force Regiment fought courageously in Hussainiwala prevailing against the very strong opposition of the Indian forces and finally defeated them. This well-crafted book takes us behind the scenes, leaving us wiser and more appreciative of how unyielding troops could help defend a nation and protect its future. The author, now in his late seventies, was inspired to write this book to uncover factual details of the event and help both the armed forces and the civil society understand the intricacies of how this difficult battle was fought and won. The book also pays homage to the officers and men who laid down their lives in the line of duty.

Indica: A Deep Natural History of the Indian Subcontinent fills this gap. From the oldest rocks, formed three billion years ago in Karnataka, to the arrival of our ancestors 50,000 years ago on the banks of the Indus, the author meticulously sifts through wide-ranging scientific disciplines and through the layers of earth to tell us the story of India, filled with a variety of fierce reptiles, fantastic dinosaurs, gargantuan mammals and amazing plants. Beautifully produced in full colour, with a rare collection of images, illustrations and maps, Indica is full of fascinating, lesser-known facts. It shows us how every piece of rock and inch of soil is a virtual museum, and how, over billions of years, millions of spectacular creatures have reproduced, walked and lived over and under it.

Book excerpt: “I fell captive to the spells of its stories—Scheherezade and her command over wild nights of imagination come to mind. Maybe it's the way Talukder manages to both evoke Urdu poetic tradition and create her own—these poems swoon with the restrained sensuality of the old world while dancing with the glittering passions of the new. Let yourself get caught up in this book's wondrous whorls and whirls—you won't regret it." —Tarfia Faizullah, author of Registers of Illuminated Villages and Seam “After everything we thought we knew about ourselves, and our loss, there is more to find: 'When the color left / my cheeks,' the poet writes, 'You / left too.' This book is an exquisite lyrical feast.” —Ilya Kaminsky, author of Deaf Republic and Dancing in Odessa “Adeeba Talukder's City of the Beloved hovers on the nexus of heartache and joy, a meeting point of arrival and exodus, and where love is the revolving door to the world of the unknown. Recalling the concision and scintillating acumen of Emily Dickinson, Mirabai, Rabia and Sappho, and drawing on the masters of Urdu and Persian poetry, Talukder renders a full world of heart, soul, and body, profound and daunting, sensual and sacred, enchanting and redeemable. This is a beautiful, stunning and unforgettable book.” — Khaled Mattawa, author of Mare Nostrum Adeeba Shahid Talukder is a Pakistani American poet, singer, and translator of Urdu and Persian poetry. She is the author of the chapbook What Is Not Beautiful (Glass Poetry Press, 2018).

Book The Mahabharata

    Book Details:
  • Author :
  • Publisher : Penguin UK
  • Release : 2015-06-01
  • ISBN : 9351188760
  • Pages : 746 pages

Download or read book The Mahabharata written by and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 746 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mahabharata is one of the greatest stories ever told. Though the basic plot is widely known, there is much more to the epic than the dispute between Kouravas and Pandavas that led to the battle in Kurukshetra. It has innumerable sub-plots that accommodate fascinating meanderings and digressions, and it has rarely been translated in full, given its formidable length of 80,000 shlokas or couplets. This magnificent 10-volume unabridged translation of the epic is based on the Critical Edition compiled at the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute. * The final volume ends the instructions of the Anushasana Parva. The horse sacrifice is held, and Dhritarashtra, Gandhari, Kunti, Vidura and Sanjaya leave for the forest. Krishna and Balarama die as the Yadavas fight among themselves. The Pandavas leave on the great journey with the famous companion—Dharma disguised as a dog. Refusing to abandon the dog, Yudhishthira goes to heaven in his physical body and sees all the Kurus and the Pandavas are already there. * Every conceivable human emotion figures in the Mahabharata, the reason why the epic continues to hold sway over our imagination. In this lucid, nuanced and confident translation, Bibek Debroy makes the Mahabharata marvellously accessible to contemporary readers.
