Book Ovis Has Trouble With School

Download or read book Ovis Has Trouble With School written by Kelly Beins and published by . This book was released on 2016-12-25 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ovis is a sheep that is misunderstood by his teacher and his peers. He has sensory processing issues, therefore he misbehaves. But when Ovis gets some new ideas about how to cope from an occupational therapist, he gets back on track. The world of sensory processing can be a confusing place. 1 in 15 school-aged children experience sensory differences. Despite an advancing body of research and a quickly expanding body of knowledge, those children and families living with sensory differences often feel misunderstood, and at a loss for how to communicate to others what they are going through and what they need. This book seeks to offer Ovis and his family as someone to whom families can relate. There is no medical diagnosis of sensory processing disorder. However, sensory challenges are a part of many existing diagnoses and regardless of diagnosis or "condition," our human experience makes us sensory beings. By reading to children we support various sensory systems and create a nurturing welcoming place for them to feel connected, both to themselves and to other people. This alone is a good place to start when trying to support a child with sensory processing differences.

Book Meet the Overs and the Unders

Download or read book Meet the Overs and the Unders written by OTRL Jackie Brown and published by Aapc Publishing. This book was released on 2019-07-15 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meet the Overs and the Unders: Making Sense of Sensory Processing is appropriate for children, parents, families, teachers, and professionals. As an occupational therapist (OT) for many years I have found it challenging to talk to children about sensory processing. One of the hardest parts is finding a simple definition and way to discuss an important process of our body that helps us complete things we do every day. As a clinician, I have found the most important part of addressing sensory challenges is to first identify whether a child is over-responsive or under-responsive. Over-responsive (or over-reactive) individuals need LESS sensory information than most others. For example, if too many things are going on around them, they may try to run, hide or have a meltdown. Under-responsive (or under-reactive) individuals need MORE sensory information than most others. For example, they may not respond if their name is called or notice when they bump into someone else. A child's ability to make sense of their sensory processing style is an invaluable skill. Discovering whether someone is over- or under-responsive helps determine what sensory tools will best meet their sensory needs to help them feel more comfortable and confident. The good news is, with this interactive tool, children will now have help visualizing different areas of sensory processing, to help them understand that they are not alone and that they are able to find tools to help them throughout their days. In this book, your child will be introduced to two different families, the Overs and the Unders, as they explore the eight different sensory systems and their over- or under-reactions to different sensory input. Beautiful illustrations paired with just the right questions, this book will help open the lines of communication to start talking more easily about sensory processing with elementary school-age children. Your child will be able to return to this book if they ever need to revisit their sensory processing style, and we include a downloadable worksheet for your child to complete any time they want.

Book excerpt: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) presents itself in many different ways, and teachers must be able to identify individual and shared characteristics to provide proper support. This can often present problems for teachers who lack experience of working with children across the entire spectrum, which ranges from supporting those with severe learning difficulties to working with highly able young people. Using real-life examples from their decades of experience, Francine Brower and Keith MacKenzie Cox explain how to identify diverse characteristics of autism and explore key challenges that individuals and schools face. Covering a range of autism presentations, including sensory differences, communication, behaviour and socialisation, this is the ideal book for mainstream and special school teachers looking to improve their special educational needs provision, and develop the best possible learning outcomes for all pupils on the autism spectrum.
