Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “If the Polish armed forces are of interest to you this title covering their distinguished service during World War II should appeal to many.” —Armorama The First Polish Armored Division was formed in Scotland in February 1942 from Polish exiles who had escaped first Poland and then France. Its commander, Stanislaw Maczek, and many of its men had previously served in Polish 10th Motorized Cavalry Brigade (10 BKS), which had taken part in the Polish invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1938 and given a good account of itself in the defense of Poland against German and Soviet invasion of 1939. Under Maczek’s leadership the division was trained and equipped along British lines in preparation for the invasion of France. Attached to 1st Canadian Army, the division was sent to Normandy in late July 1944. It suffered heavily during Operation Totalize but went on to play a crucial role in preventing an orderly German withdrawal from the Falaise Pocket by its stand at Hill 262. They then played their part in the advance across Western Europe and into Germany. This detailed history, supported by dozens of archive photos, concludes by looking at the often-poor treatment of Maczek and his men after the war. “A Polish armoured division comprising volunteers from Polish refugees—it reads like a story from the Boys Own Paper . . . Astonishing!” —Books Monthly

This book was released on 1999 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the darkest days in modern history was September 1, 1939, when the German war machine rolled into Poland. After a five-week struggle against a ruthless enemy far superior in equipment and personnel, Poland succumbed. But in their hearts, the Poles refused to admit defeat. Although the regular fighting on Polish soil came to an end, it continued underground, and carried into foreign lands. Polish officers and men, risking their lives, made their way to France to join the new Polish Army being organized there, then to Great Britain and the Middle East. Time and again, the Polish Armed Forces were a major influence on the course of the Second World War. Beset by invaders throughout history, they had become a tough and resolute people, determined to restore their independence and their country's freedom. This book is a tribute to those who fought the battle for a free Poland.

Book Straddling the Iron Curtain

Download or read book Straddling the Iron Curtain written by Machteld Venken and published by Studies in History, Memory and Politics. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book neither researches structural integration, nor starts from ethnically defined categories. At the basis are two clearly distinguishable migration streams entering Belgium in the aftermath of World War II. First, there were about 350 soldiers from Poland who served with the Allies, had met Flemish young women during their liberation march through Flanders, married their financ?es in 1945 and 1946 and settled in their wives' hometowns and villages. And second, there were the Ostarbeiterinnen-- Soviet young women of Ukrainian, Russian, or Belarusian decent, who after the German invasion of the Soviet Union on 22 June 1941, were deported to Nazi Germany to do forced labor. While at work, the young women met Western European deported workers, volunteers, and prisoners of war. Although any off-duty contact between them was prohibited, numerous love affairs flourished and after their liberation by the Western Allies, about 4,000 Ostarbeiterinnen chose to migrate further to Belgium rather than be repatriated to the Soviet Union where they could be accused of collaboration ... The central question of this study is as follows: are the war experiences and war memories of these two migration streams similar because they were all displaced persons living in the 'same standardised refugee world'?"--Introd.
