Book excerpt: This work describes the technology necessary to optimize the performance of any refractory lining. It provides an overview of the thermomechanical behaviour and wear of refractory lining systems, and details the structural behaviour of several classical refractory geometries, highlighting the critical regions of each lining system where high stress is most likely to create fractures.
Download or read book Monolithic Refractories written by Subrata Banerjee and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1998-09-02 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this valuable handbook, various monolithic refractories currently in use are described in detail, with particular attention paid to their chemical and physical behaviors during manufacturing, installation, and the duty cycle. Critical aspects of reactions involved within the refractory body as it approaches the used temperature within the processing environment are addressed from the practitioner's point of view. To ensure optimum performance, the application, installation, and design of refractory components are described in detail. In short, the book contains a comprehensive discussion on monolithic refractories concerning their formulation, manufacture, and use. The information is most current, with suitable tables and figures. Also, historical perspectives on the evolution of the refractory industry are provided. This book is primarily designed to serve as a handbook for practicing ceramic engineers, scientists, raw material suppliers, and research and development personnel in the refractory manufacturing industry and industries associated with high temperature material processing. It may also be used in courses for ceramic engineering students specializing in refractories. Download or read book Safety in the Handling of Cryogenic Fluids written by Frederick J. Edeskuty and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1996-05-31 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of safety in any scientific endeavor is never in question. However, when cryogenic temperatures are involved, safety is especially important. In addition to observing the normal precautions, one must also take into account the variations of physical properties that occur at low temperatures. At these tempera tures, some properties not only exhibit large differences from their normal values but also can vary widely over a small temperature range. Before any cryogenic project is started, a thorough knowledge of the possible hazards is necessary. Only in this way can the safest operation be attained. Over the hundred-year history of cryogenic research, this has been shown to be the case. Keeping this requirement in mind is an essential ingredient in the quest for accident-free work. The past four or five decades have seen a great expansion of cryogenic technology. Cryogenic liquids, such as oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, and helium, have become commonly used in a number of different applications and are easily available in any part of the United States and, indeed, almost anywhere in the world. Not only are these liquids available, they have become less expensive and also available in ever larger quantities. As quantities increase, so also do the conse quences of mishaps. The future seems to hold promise of ever larger and more widespread use of the common cryogens. Thus, the importance of safety also increases as time progresses.
