Book excerpt: "The Classic tale of a girl and the horse she loved" ZZ Black is the moving story of two lost souls, one a young girl, the other a troubled horse, brought together by circumstance, or perhaps something far greater, in this magical tale of a girl and her horse. Set in the present day, this is the story of Kate, a teenager struggling to deal with the loss of her mother, while living on a magical farm where she is able to talk to the animals. Kate has always wanted a horse of her own, and when a troubled stallion, ZZ black comes to the farm, Kate soon realizes that she might be the only one who can get through to the stubborn creature, who refuses to speak, despite the enchantment of the farm. Will Kate be able to solve the mystery of ZZ Black before her father and the adult world condemns the horse to a terrible fate, and will she be willing to make the ultimate sacrifice in the process, risking the thing she loves the most?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the early day of mining in colonial Virginia and Maryland up to the time of World War II, blacks were an important part of the labor force in the coal industry. Yet in this, as in other enterprises, their role has heretofore been largely ignored. Now Roland L. Lewis redresses the balance in this comprehensive history of black coal miners in America. The experience of blacks in the industry has varied widely over time and by region, and the approach of this study is therefore more comparative than chronological. Its aim is to define the patterns of race relations that prevailed among the miners. Using this approach, Lewis finds five distractive systems of race relations. There was in the South before and after the Civil War a system of slavery and convict labor -- an enforced servitude without legal compensation. This was succeeded by an exploitative system whereby the southern coal operators, using race as an excuse, paid lower wages to blacks and thus succeeded in depressing the entire wage scale. By contrast, in northern and midwestern mines, the pattern was to exclude blacks from the industry so that whites could control their jobs and their communities. In the central Appalachians, although blacks enjoyed greater social equality, the mine operators manipulated racial tensions to keep the work force divided and therefore weak. Finally, with the advent of mechanization, black laborers were displaced from the mines to such an extent that their presence in the coal fields in now nearly a thing of the past. By analyzing the ways race, class, and community shaped social relations in the coal fields, Black Coal Miners in America makes a major contribution to the understanding of regional, labor, social, and African-American history.

  • Author : Daniel Z. Freedman

Download or read book Supergravity written by Daniel Z. Freedman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-04-05 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supergravity, together with string theory, is one of the most significant developments in theoretical physics. Written by two of the most respected workers in the field, this is the first-ever authoritative and systematic account of supergravity. The book starts by reviewing aspects of relativistic field theory in Minkowski spacetime. After introducing the relevant ingredients of differential geometry and gravity, some basic supergravity theories (D=4 and D=11) and the main gauge theory tools are explained. In the second half of the book, complex geometry and N=1 and N=2 supergravity theories are covered. Classical solutions and a chapter on AdS/CFT complete the book. Numerous exercises and examples make it ideal for Ph.D. students, and with applications to model building, cosmology and solutions of supergravity theories, it is also invaluable to researchers. A website hosted by the authors, featuring solutions to some exercises and additional reading material, can be found at www.cambridge.org/supergravity.
