Book Human Rights as Indivisible Rights

Download or read book Human Rights as Indivisible Rights written by Ida Koch and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-09-28 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is usually assumed that economic, social and cultural rights are two different kinds of rights. Despite this dichotomous perception of human rights we talk about human rights as indivisible, interrelated and interdependent. The purpose of the book has been to examine how the European Court of Human Rights perceives of the indivisibility notion as a legal phenomenon. This is done by analysing five different socio-economic rights: the right to health, the right to housing, the right to education, the right to social cash benefits and various work related rights. The examination clearly illustrates that the Court perceives of human rights as indivisible rights and this integrated approach to human rights protection and its further potential is discussed from a hermeneutic perspective.

Book On the Early Development of Mind

Download or read book On the Early Development of Mind written by Edward Glover and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the Early Development of Mind by Edward Glover covers a period of thirty years in which he gathered together and annotated his various contributions to this most obscure of all psychoanalytical themes. He approaches mind from various angles, in particular the vicissitudes of the libido, of ego-formation, and of the emotions. The work is offered in chronological order and with unabashed changes to enhance readability. His clinical studies are orientated from the same angles and he deals, inter alia, with the developmental aspects of normal and disordered character, alcoholism, drug addiction, perversions, obsessional neuroses, and psychoses. Of out standing significance are his papers on the psychoanalytical classification of mental disorders, on the nature of reality sense, and on the 'functional' aspects of the mental apparatus. Glover was well aware of the dangers of uncontrolled, abstract theorizing, and several of his later essays exhibit an unflinching resolution to apply the strictest scientific standards not only in the regulation of research and the control of technique, but also in the teaching and the training of psychoanalysts. The book represents a remarkable achievement indispensable to the psychoanalytical student, the psychiatrist, and all who wish to ground themselves in the principles and history of psychoanalysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bestselling feminist classic that revolutionized the way we think about rape, as a historical phenomenon and as an urgent crisis—essential reading in the era of #MeToo. “A major work of history.”—The Village Voice • One of the New York Public Library’s 100 Books of the Century As powerful and timely now as when it was first published, Against Our Will stands as a unique document of the history, politics, and sociology of rape and the inherent and ingrained inequality of men and women under the law. Fact by fact, Susan Brownmiller pulls back the centuries of damaging lies and misrepresentations to reveal how rape has been accepted in all societies and how it continues to profoundly affect women’s lives today. A keen and prescient analyst, a detailed historian, Susan Brownmiller discusses the consequences of rape in biblical times, rape as an accepted spoil of war, as well as child molestation, marital rape, and date rape (a term that she coined). In lucid, persuasive prose, Brownmiller uses her experience as a journalist to create a definitive, devastating work of lasting social importance. Praise for Against Our Will “The most comprehensive study of rape ever offered to the public . . . It forces readers to take a fresh look at their own attitudes toward this devastating crime.”—Newsweek “A classic . . . No one who reads it will come away untouched.”—The Village Voice “Chilling and monumental . . . Deserves a place next to those rare books which force us to change the way we feel about what we know.”—The New York Times Book Review “A landmark work, one of the most significant books to emerge in this decade.”—Houston Chronicle “A definitive text, startling, compelling, and a landmark.”—St. Louis Post-Dispatch “An overwhelming indictment. We need it, it is a hideous revelation and it should be required reading.”—Los Angeles Times Book Review “Chilling, monumental, exhaustive, detailed, absorbing and original. . . . Brownmiller’s greatest contribution is establishing the continuity between rape and other facets of American culture.”—Commonweal

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An anthology of essays examining the nature and practice of sexual masochism The contested psychoanalytic concept of masochism has served to open up pathways into less-explored regions of the human mind and behavior. In this significant addition to the Essential Papers in Psychoanalysis series, Margaret Ann Fitzpatrick Hanly presents an anthology of the most outstanding writings in the psychoanalytic study of masochism. In bringing these essays together, Dr. Fitzpatrick Hanly expertly combines classic and contemporary theories by the most respected scholars in the field to create a varied and integrated volume.
