Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by a 1937 map and travelogue of a newspaperman’s tour, author Mark W. Nichols embarked on his own long journey into the unique cities of the South. En route he met beekeepers, cheese makers, crawfish “bawlers,” duck callers, and a licensed alligator hunter, as well as entrepreneurs and governors. His keen observations encompass the southern states from Virginia to Arkansas and points south, and he unpacks the unique qualities of every city he visits. “It’s easy to say that getting to meet so many interesting and wonderful people was the best part of the journey--because it’s true,” Nichols writes. “I know there are friendly people everywhere, but southern friendliness is different.” His story embraces a wealth of southern charm from local characters, folklore, and customs to food, music, and dancing. Besides being just plain fun to read, Nichols’s account of his journey gives readers a true taste of the flavor of the evolving modern South.

Download or read book The Cajun Prairie written by Malcolm F. Vidrine and published by . This book was released on 2019-02-28 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cajun Prairie is 99.9 percent destroyed. However, the authors discovered remnants of this prairie habitat along railroad rights-of-ways in the 1980s and photographed these remnants during their years of investigation. More than 200 of these images are arranged into monthly displays in an effort to provide views of the prairie as it may have appeared in the 1800s. The remnants were each distinctive in their biodiversity, and each provided a splash of color from the blooming plants at different times of the year. These remnants are now decimated; thus these images are basically all that remains. An essay on the discovery of these remnants and the discoveries made while studying these remnants introduces and closes the monthly presentation of images.

Book Haunted Halls of Ivy

Download or read book Haunted Halls of Ivy written by Daniel W. Barefoot and published by John F. Blair, Publisher. This book was released on 2004 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you're touring Flagler College in historic St. Augustine, look for an old man in a straw hat who wanders away from your group. He is Henry Flagler, railroad magnate, co-owner of Standard Oil, and perhaps the man most responsible for the Florida boom. He built the spectacular, 540-room, Moorish Revival palace that now houses his namesake college. And he died back in 1913. The glow around the door of the unoccupied room on the third floor is the spirit of Henry Flagler's second wife. The phantom footsteps on the marble stairs to the mezzanine are the wraith of his third wife. The woman in black beckoning from the fourth floor is the ghost of his mistress, said to be imprisoned there. Haunted Halls of Ivy contains thirty-nine supernatural tales from colleges and universities throughout the South. Some of the region's oldest, largest, and most famous institutions are represented here, as are smaller, well-respected schools. This isn't the dull, archetypal stuff you had to learn in Professor Staff's Paranormal Events 101 class back at State Tech U.

Tahoma's life journey includes early adoption, recognition of his unique talent, and a meteoric rise to fame in the Santa Fe art world followed by alcoholism. Following research into spotty records, the authors completed this compelling true story through oral histories from over 50 people, most of whom knew Tahoma personally. This book includes his work from his formative years discovering art at the Santa Fe Indian School to his winning the coveted Philbrook Award. Book They Called Us River Rats

Download or read book They Called Us River Rats written by Macon Fry and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2021-05-04 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They Called Us River Rats: The Last Batture Settlement of New Orleans is the previously untold story of perhaps the oldest outsider settlement in America, an invisible community on the annually flooded shores of the Mississippi River. This community exists in the place between the normal high and low water line of the Mississippi River, a zone known in Louisiana as the batture. For the better part of two centuries, batture dwellers such as Macon Fry have raised shantyboats on stilts, built water-adapted homes, foraged, fished, and survived using the skills a river teaches. Until now the stories of this way of life have existed only in the memories of those who have lived here. Beginning in 2000, Fry set about recording the stories of all the old batture dwellers he could find: maritime workers, willow furniture makers, fishermen, artists, and river shrimpers. Along the way, Fry uncovered fascinating tales of fortune tellers, faith healers, and wild bird trappers who defiantly lived on the river. They Called Us River Rats also explores the troubled relationship between people inside the levees, the often-reviled batture folks, and the river itself. It traces the struggle between batture folks and city authorities, the commercial interests that claimed the river, and Louisiana’s most powerful politicians. These conflicts have ended in legal battles, displacement, incarceration, and even lynching. Today Fry is among the senior generation of “River Rats” living in a vestigial colony of twelve “camps” on New Orleans’s river batture, a fragment of a settlement that once stretched nearly six miles and numbered hundreds of homes. It is the last riparian settlement on the Lower Mississippi and a contrarian, independent life outside urban zoning, planning, and flood protection. This book is for everyone who ever felt the pull of the Mississippi River or saw its towering levees and wondered who could live on the other side.
