Download or read book Digital Activism in the Social Media Era written by Bruce Mutsvairo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-12 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book probes the vitality, potentiality and ability of new communication and technological changes to drive online-based civil action across Africa. In a continent booming with mobile innovation and a plethora of social networking sites, the Internet is considered a powerful platform used by pro-democracy activists to negotiate and sometimes push for reform-based political and social changes in Africa. The book discusses and theorizes digital activism within social and geo-political realms, analysing cases such as the #FeesMustFall and #BringBackOurGirls campaigns in South Africa and Nigeria respectively to question the extent to which they have changed the dynamics of digital activism in sub-Saharan Africa. Comparative case study reflections in eight African countries identify and critique digital concepts questioning what impact they have had on the civil society. Cases also explore the African LGBT community as a social movement while discussing opportunities and challenges faced by online activists fighting for LGBT equality. Finally, gender-based activists using digital tools to gain attention and facilitate social changes are also appraised.
Download or read book SADC Gender Protocol 2019 Barometer written by Morna, Colleen Lowe and published by Gender Links. This book was released on 2019-08-23 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scoring another goal for gender equality, the 2019 Southern African Development Community (SADC) Gender Protocol Barometer breaks with past tradition in focusing solely on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights. Measuring 100 indicators across seven themes, the Barometer is the first civil society shadow report on SADC’s new SRHR Strategy Score Card, ranking countries based on their performance, while offering detailed analysis and insights into what is changing and still needs to change. The no-hold-barred #VoiceandChoice Barometer features the first stand-along chapters on Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, Safe Abortion, and Sexual Diversity. It provides the data that underpins 40 national campaigns led the focal networks of the Southern African Gender Protocol Alliance, and 174 local campaigns led by the Centres of Excellence for Gender in Local Government. A must read for all those committed to Action and Results for Agenda 2030 in the SADC region.

Download or read book Gender Population and Development written by Maithreyi Krishna Raj and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One million women are "missing" from India's population due to female neglect of various sorts--and possibly one million more due to acts of direct elimination before birth. Within that context, this collection employs several field surveys to explore the connections between population, gender, and development by way of two distinct sets of conditions. The first set involves individual endowments--the resources that a household will allocate to its women. The second set concerns the ways in which the productive and reproductive roles of men and women are structured in societies. With the help of theoretical reviews and empirical studies, this book illustrates the powerful, intermediary effects of gender relations in modifying or reinforcing gender biases.
