As a cover up, she is forced to marry a sixty-year-old man who already has three wives, several children and grandchildren older than her. Soon after delivery, her brute husband learns of the hidden truth, and all hell breaks loose. Langa is an orphan, adopted by a wealthy Greek couple. He has a chance at real happiness until his adoptive mother dies. His adoptive father turns to alcohol and eventually sexual abuse. When the odious man finally dies, Langa is left with nothing. At a crossroads, both on his sexual orientation and unpredictable future, the eighteen-year-old sets off to make his way in the unknown world. Lucilla is born into a family already torn apart by ruthless bandits. Her broken parents end up dead, leaving her to fight for survival by any means necessary. Now, in 2012, a handsome banker, a sexy undercover agent, and a desperate prostitute clash in a single act of betrayal that leaves hearts broken and destinies derailed. Attempting to overcome the ghosts of their haunted pasts, Maya, Langa and Lucilla unleash a sequence of events that swings the pendulum of the judicial system, saves the republic from a critical error of judgment, and opens a historic chapter for children rights, social equality, and gender diversity. Still, the past lingers, so what is the price they must pay to let it go?

Her story takes us back to a shattered childhood world, a runaway’s odyssey of love and madness, and ultimately to a legendary mountain range in central Africa. In Mountains of the Moon, I. J. Kay has crafted a haunting, hallucinatory, and suspenseful tale of the ultimate triumph of language and imagination, of witnessing and forgiveness. This richly imagined debut novel has garnered comparisons to the swift pacing of mystery master Stieg Larsson and the dazzling literary styles of Cormac McCarthy and William Faulkner.

Book Bruce Dickinson Insights

  • Author : Brigitte Schön
  • Publisher : Troubador Publishing Ltd

  • Pages : 200 pages

Download or read book Bruce Dickinson Insights written by Brigitte Schön and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2015-11-28 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bruce Dickinson, best known as the lead vocalist of Iron Maiden, seems to have unbounded energy, ideas and imagination. He mesmerises thousands of fans with his integrity, vitality and wit. Wouldn’t it be great to know what makes him tick? Those who know Bruce Dickinson know: this man doesn’t do things by halves. Thus, he was voted a living example of a polymath by Intelligent Life magazine in 2009. Bruce has been recognised as a singer, a TV presenter, a record producer, a pilot and a fencer. Therefore, it should be no surprise that his lyrics also stand out. His subject matters are challenging – he reflects on life and death, freedom and destiny, man and God, sex and religion. Asked about the complexity of his lyrics, Bruce said in an interview: “I ask myself, does it rock? And if it does, who gives a s**t what’s it’s about? All information’s there if people choose to dig for it.” The treasures you can find are absolutely worth the digging. Bruce also added: “And if they don’t then it doesn’t matter, so long as they enjoy it.” Bruce Dickinson is an undisputed master of heavy metal; his voice and music are a natural force. The subjects are extremely interesting and Bruce succeeds in artfully getting to the heart of them. This is why this book is dedicated to Bruce as a songwriter, as a poet of lyrics, some of which represent little masterpieces – even without music. They point beyond themselves by means of powerful imagery. Their ambiguity holds some surprises. The best way to get to know the real Bruce Dickinson probably is to have a beer with him. But he admitted that through his lyrics “you can certainly maybe get an idea of what is going {sic} on with myself,” and that’s why all fans of Bruce, and Iron Maiden, should read this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transnational Cinematic & Popular Music Icons: Lena Horne, Dorothy Dandridge, & Queen Latifah, 1917-2017 centers twentieth and twenty-first century black-transnational stereotypes, celebrities, and symbols Lena Horne's, Dorothy Dandridge;s, and Queen Latifah’s transnational popular cultural struggles between domination and autonomy, with a particular emphasis on their films and popular music. Linking each performer to twentieth century U.S., African-American, and global gender histories and noting the intersections of race, gender, sexuality, class, and empire in their overlapping transnational biographies, Transnational Cinematic & Popular Music Icons: Lena Horne, Dorothy Dandridge, & Queen Latifah, 1917-2017 connects Horne, Dandridge, and Latifah to each other and legacies of Hollywood stereotypes and popular music’s internationally-routed politics. Through a close reading of Horne's, Dandridge's, and Latifah’s films and popular music, the performers tie to historic black-transnational caricatures, from the “tragic mulatto” to Sapphire, Mammy, and Jezebel, and additional, non-white female performers, from Josephine Baker to Halle Berry, maneuvering within transnational popular culture industrial matrices and against white supremacist and hetero-patriarchal forces.

Book excerpt: Tuttwyler, Ohio, is the perfect Midwestern town. Beautiful square. Gazebo dripping with gingerbread. Leafy streets lined with big white houses. Even the town’s annual summer festival is perfect. It commemorates the unfortunate clubbing death of the Indian princess Podewedka, by the town’s founding fathers, John and Amos Tuttwyler, back in 1803. The only thing that’s not perfect is Howie Dornick’s house. It’s right on the parade route and it hasn’t been painted in years. But that’s going to change, now that D. William Aitchbone is chairman of the Squaw Days Committee. You can bet on that! But Bill Aitchbone has to tread carefully. Howie, after all, is the illegitimate son of local war hero Artie Brown. Howie finally does paint his house. But not white like all the others. He paints it the most obnoxious shade of green imaginable. Howie’s really in hot water now. Then Hugh Harbinger sees Howie’s green house. Hugh was once New York City’s most famous color designer. Before going off the deep end, he created 300 different shades of black! He’s determined to make a comeback. Determined to make “Serendipity Green” the most popular color ever. Serendipity Green not only lampoons America’s small town festivals, it lowers the boom on big city trendiness as well. It is irreverent and iconoclastic and simply irresistible.

Book The Films of Agnes Moorehead

Download or read book The Films of Agnes Moorehead written by Axel Nissen and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2013-07-11 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before she achieved immortality on the long-running situation comedy Bewitched, Agnes Moorehead had established a distinguished career as a character actress. After her screen debut in Citizen Kane (1941), Moorehead became one of the most familiar female faces on the silver screen. For moviegoers of the 1940s and ‘50s, she was the quintessential character actress, earning four Academy Award nominations during a career that saw her gain the respect of her peers in all four major entertainment media: radio, film, theater, and television. In The Films of Agnes Moorehead, Axel Nissen looks at the actress’s sixty-three feature films between 1941 and 1973. Each film is profiled here, with particular emphasis placed on the films that merit closer attention: Citizen Kane, The Magnificent Ambersons, Mrs. Parkington, Dark Passage, All That Heaven Allows, The Left Hand of God, The Swan, Tempest, The Bat, and Hush… Hush, Sweet Charlotte. Arranged in chronological order, the discussion of these films highlights Moorehead’s contribution to each feature. In addition to analyzing her performances, the author discusses the development of Moorehead’s career as a whole, along with her relationship with various studios, directors, producers, and fellow actors. Based on extensive interviews with the actress’s surviving friends and co-workers, as well as detailed archival research into primary sources, this book brings to light new information not just about Moorehead’s work in film, but on her life and career in general. Though this book will certainly appeal to movie buffs, The Films of Agnes Moorehead will also be of interest to students and scholars of classic Hollywood films, including those interested in women and film, gender studies, and film history.

Book Luke Widows Judges and Stereotypes

Download or read book Luke Widows Judges and Stereotypes written by Febbie C. Dickerson and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-08-01 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biblical narratives are not simply sacred stories for religious communities: They are stories that provide transformative insight into cultural biases. By putting historical criticism and reception history into dialogue with womanist biblical hermeneutics, Luke, Widows, Judges, and Stereotypes offers a provocative reading of Jesus’ parable about a widow who confronts a judge and obtains what she seeks by means of physical threat. Rather than simply reading the widow as the model for “one who prays always and does not lose heart” (Luke 18:1), Dickerson shows that read in the context of Luke’s wider narrative, the widow, domesticated and robbed both of her agency and moral ambiguity, is more likely demanding vengeance instead of justice. Likewise, rather than simply reading the judge as one "who neither feared God nor had respect for people" (Luke 18:2), Dickerson argues that the judge is both an ideal man and one who compromises standards of ancient masculinity. Then, reading both the widow and judge through African American stereotypes (Mammy, Jezebel, Sapphire, Cool Black Male, Master-Pastor, and Foolish Judge) that are used to degrade, debase, and control, and reading them into and in light of the parable, Dickerson demonstrates how the parable calls into question these stereotypes thereby producing new liberative readings.
