Download or read book Thermodynamics of Systems Containing Flexible Chain Polymers written by V.J. Klenin and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1999-06-03 with total page 851 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the problems of the thermodynamics of systems containing flexible-chain polymers as the basis of polymer material science. The main thermodynamic quantities and concepts are introduced and discussed in the order of the objects getting more and more complicated: gases, magnets, low-molecular-weight substances and mixtures, and finally, polymers and polymer blends. All topics are considered in a common clue, using the principle of universality. The stability conditions for the one-phase state of multi-component systems are given. Phase separation is regarded as a result of loss in stability. The critical state of a system, with the one-phase state being close to the boundary of stability conditions breaking, is discussed in detail. The effects of both light scattering (elastic and dynamic) and diffusion, as directly depending on the thermodynamic parameters characterizing the one-phase state stability, are considered in detail. One of the versions of colloid scattering, namely, the turbidity spectrum method, is described as useful for the characterization of various heterogeneous structures and for the phase analysis of polymer systems. In the approximation of mean field theories and advanced field theory, formalisms expound the following divisions of the thermodynamics of binary and polynary systems with flexible-chain polymers: conformation of the polymer coil, composition fluctuations, elastic and dynamic light scattering, diffusion in the one-phase state (including the critical range), phase separation, polymer fractionation, the coil-globule transition, phase equilibrium and separation in the system network polymer + low-molecular-weight liquid, polymer blends and multiphase separation.

Download or read book Compact Cities and Sustainable Urban Development written by Gert de Roo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-24 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2000. Encouraging, even requiring, higher density urban development is a major policy in the European Community and of Agenda 21, and a central principle of growth management programmes used by cities around the world. This work takes a critical look at a number of claims made by proponents of this initiative, seeking to answer whether indeed this strategy controls the spread of urban suburbs into open lands, is acceptable to residents, reduces trip lengths and encourages use of public transit, improves efficiency in providing urban infrastructure and services, and results in environmental improvements supporting higher quality of life in cities.

Download or read book Algorithms and Complexity in Mathematics Epistemology and Science written by Nicolas Fillion and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-07 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ACMES (Algorithms and Complexity in Mathematics, Epistemology, and Science) is a multidisciplinary conference series that focuses on epistemological and mathematical issues relating to computation in modern science. This volume includes a selection of papers presented at the 2015 and 2016 conferences held at Western University that provide an interdisciplinary outlook on modern applied mathematics that draws from theory and practice, and situates it in proper context. These papers come from leading mathematicians, computational scientists, and philosophers of science, and cover a broad collection of mathematical and philosophical topics, including numerical analysis and its underlying philosophy, computer algebra, reliability and uncertainty quantification, computation and complexity theory, combinatorics, error analysis, perturbation theory, experimental mathematics, scientific epistemology, and foundations of mathematics. By bringing together contributions from researchers who approach the mathematical sciences from different perspectives, the volume will further readers' understanding of the multifaceted role of mathematics in modern science, informed by the state of the art in mathematics, scientific computing, and current modeling techniques.

Download or read book Modern Information Optics with MATLAB written by Yaping Zhang and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-12-31 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An easy-to-understand course book, based on the authentic lectures and detailed research, conducted by the authors themselves, on information optics, holography and MATLAB. This book is the first to highlight the incoherent optical system, provide up-to-date, novel digital holography techniques, and demonstrate MATLAB codes to accomplish tasks such as optical image processing and pattern recognition. This title is a comprehensive introduction to the basics of Fourier optics as well as optical image processing and digital holography. A step-by-step guide which details the vast majority of the derivations, without omitting essential steps, to facilitate a clear mathematical understanding. This book also features exercises at the end of each chapter, providing hands-on experience and consolidating understanding. An ideal companion for graduates and researchers involved in engineering and applied physics, as well as interested in the growing field of information optics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fair question to ask of an advocate of subjective Bayesianism (which the author is) is "how would you model uncertainty?" In this book, the author writes about how he has done it using real problems from the past, and offers additional comments about the context in which he was working.
Download or read book Burning in Blueness The Dark Light of a Countertenor written by Maxine Handy and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2011-06-21 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Burning in Blueness is a haunting memoir of the world's foremost countertenor James Bowman. The author lyrically portrays and interprets her affinity with the great man and his music. The text is in three parts covering a total of three decades, to include James' work with David Munrow, Britten and Pears, and as the voice of Robert King's five-year Purcell series. The account is not chronological, but traces the creative contact between the author's literary interests and James Bowman's musical genius. The book makes a valuable contribution to musical history, as the famous and intensely private countertenor himself, has always resisted the suggestion of a conventional biography. Burning in Blueness is part of James' legacy as he approaches his 70th birthday in 2011.

Download or read book A Casebook on Roman Property Law written by Herbert Hausmaninger and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-02-07 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a thorough introduction to Roman property law by means of "cases," consisting of brief excerpts from Roman juristic sources in the original Latin with accompanying English translations. The cases are selected and grouped so as to provide an overview of each topic and an orderly exposition of its parts. To each case is attached a set of questions that invite the reader to, e.g., clarify ambiguities in the jurist's argument, reconcile one holding with another, supply missing but necessary facts to account for the holding, and/or engage in other analytical activities. The casebook also illustrates the survival and adaptation of elements of Roman property law in the modern European civil codes, especially the three most influential of those codes: the General Civil Code of Austria (Allgemeines Bürgerliches Gesetzbuch), the German Civil Code (Bürgerliches Gesetzbuch), and the Civil Code of Switzerland (Zivilgesetzbuch). All code excerpts are accompanied by English translations. By comparing and contrasting how the codes have adopted, adapted, or rejected an underlying Roman rule or concept, it is possible for the reader to observe the dynamic character and continuing life of the Roman legal tradition. To facilitate comparison with corresponding rules and concepts in the English common law tradition, additional texts and questions prepared by the translator will be mounted on an accompanying website, www.oup.com/us/romanpropertylaw.
