Book excerpt: Excerpt from Zoroastrianism in Sassanian Times If the un - changing revelation of a changeful history of human civilisation divulges but one mystery of the human mind, it is that the essence underlying every concept of religion endures either as a feeling of absolute dependence, as Schleirmacher would put it, or as intuition of Union with the world, as Havelock Ellis would say, or as Murray announces, as that which brings us into relation with the great world-forces, or as Reinach says, sum of scruples which impede the free exercise of our faculties, though the forms, the vestments change, change eternally subject to change. Book A History of Zoroastrianism

Download or read book A History of Zoroastrianism written by Mary Boyce and published by BRILL. This book was released on 1989 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume traces the history of Zoroastrianism at times and places where its existence has previously been largely ignored, or treated only episodically. Literary, archaeological and numismatic evidence has been drawn on (some of it only recently brought to light), and local developments are distinguished. In Iran itself some 200 years of Macedonian rule had little effect on the national religion. To the east, Zoroastrianism survived in the Greco-Bactrian kingdoms and under Mauryan suzereinty, where it came into contact with Buddhism. In Eastern Mediterranean lands it was maintained by Iranian expatriates well down into Roman imperial times. They adopted Greek for their written tongue, and Zoroastrian doctrines thus became known in the Greco-Roman world. Study is made accordingly of Zoroastrian contributions to Hellenistic thought, and to Judaism, Christianity and Mithraism; and an excursus provides a thorough reassessment of the Zoroastrian pseudepigrapha.

Book excerpt: ""The Bundahišn, meaning primal or foundational creation, is the central Zoroastrian account of creation, cosmology, and eschatology, and one of the most important of the surviving testaments to Zoroastrian literature and pre-Islamic Iranian culture. Touching on geography, cosmogony, anthropology, zoology, astronomy, medicine, legend, and myth, the Bundahišn can be considered a concise compendium of Zoroastrian knowledge. The Bundahišn is well known in the field as an essential primary source for the study of ancient Iranian history, religions, literature, and languages. It is one of the most important texts composed in Zoroastrian Middle Persian, also known as Zoroastrian Book Pahlavi, in the centuries after the fall of the Sasanian Empire to the invading Arab and Islamic forces in the mid seventh century. The Bundahišn provides scholars with a particularly profitable window on Zoroastrianism's intellectual and religious history at a crucial transitional moment: centuries after the composition of the Avesta, the Zoroastrian sacred scriptures, and before the transformation of Zoroastrianism into a minority religion within Iran and adherents' dispersion throughout Central and South Asia. However, the Bundahišn is not only a scholarly tract. It is also a great work of literature in its own right, and ranks alongside the creation myths of other ancient traditions: Genesis, the Babylonian Emunah Elish, Hesiod's Theogony, and others. Informed by the latest research in Iranian Studies, this translation aims to bring to the fore the aesthetic quality, literary style, and complexity of this important work.""--

Book Zoroastrianism Ancient and Modern

Download or read book Zoroastrianism Ancient and Modern written by Ervad Phiroze Shapurji Masani and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Zoroastrianism Ancient and Modern: Comprising a Review of Dr. Dhalla's Book of Zoroastrian Theology The courageous action of that great Parsi, the late lamented Sir Dinshah Dhanjibhai Davar in convincing his colleagues on the board of the Parsi Panchayat Trustees, that Dr. Dhalla's book on Zoroastrian Theology was not worthy of the Trustees support, inasmuch as it was written along heterodox lines that were calculated to injure the deep-rooted religious sentiments of the large majority of his co-religionists, by reason of the doubts and ridicule cast therein on their time-hallowed tenets and practices, aroused great indignation and much recrimination in the tiny camp of so-called Keformers, but gave intense satisfaction to the community at large. It will be a matter of further satisfaction to my co-religionists (barring a handful of misguided Progress(! )-valas) that Ervad Pheroze Shahpoorji Masani, that energetic, enthusiastic and learned Athornan, who has won deserved popularity by his courageous efforts after religious revival and social purity, should have undertaken the task of publishing a detailed reply to the many harmful doctrines and interpretations which Dr. Dhalla has ventilated in that book. It is no doubt true that the ideas embodied in "Zoroastrian Theology" are not in any sense new or original, but are repetitions of what a thimbleful of self-styled reformers(!) have been moving heaven and earth, in season and out of season, to promulgate in the Parsi community; and though the latter, as a whole, has treated such attempts with silent con tempt, and turned a sneering deaf-ear to the fads of the more or less materialistic Sudharavalas, it might be as well to have in print a reply to these oft repeated arguments from one who is well qualified to refute them. Ervad Masani has received high University education and has for nearly twelve years made a study of the Parsi Scriptures in their original languages, the Avesta and Pahlavi. Book excerpt: Excerpt from French Views on Zoroastrianism Thesis, and in others where repetition of what had been expressed before, interfered with the onward march of the argument. A brief summary of the Avesta doctrines appended in the original to the section here styled the Age of Zoroaster, has been wholly left out; since it hardly starts any new grounds as respects the theory set forth in the chapter on the Persian idea of right. It is to be regretted however that such a rigorous mode of treatment should have excluded a few original remarks of M. Franck's, interspersed in the truncated passages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Zoroastrian Theology: From the Earliest Times to the Present Day Since the year 1771, when that worthy pioneer of romantic renown in Iranian studies, Anquetil du Perron, published his three volumes containing the first European translation of the Avesta, or Sacred Book of Zoroaster, great strides forward have been made in the West in the realm of Iranian research. The field is now replete with the lasting monuments of Western scholarship, whether in the department of standard editions of the sacred texts or the compilation of grammars and dictionaries, or again in the preparation of scientific translations as well as in making exegetical and philological researches. The service that these scholars have thus rendered to the Parsis is greater than can ever be expressed. By way of recording some expression, however inadequate, of the debt of gratitude that my community owes to them, I have inscribed this work to the Iranian scholars of the West, both past and present. Unto those who have passed away let the reward be vahishtem ahum ashaounam raochanghem vïspo-khväthrem, 'the shining, all-happy paradise of the righteous,' and may the noble band of workers who are still living be blessed with vohu-jiti us-jiti dareghem-jiti, 'good life, happy life, and long life.' It is through the Western scholars that the science of comparative philology, of scholarship based on scientific principles, and the spirit of research work have reached the Parsis. If the present work exhibits any methodic treatment on the lines of Western scholarship, it is due to the inspiring influence and scientific training of my former teacher and always friend, Professor A. V. Williams Jackson of Columbia University, who combines in his person the best elements of Iranian scholarship and the greatest zeal for Zoroastrian researches. I am grateful to him for the cordial response with which he has placed his time at my disposal and read over the entire manuscript before it went to the press. His scholarly criticism has been of great value to me for the interpretation and elucidation of the various problems that defy easy solution.
