Hundreds of children's books with an international flavor are organized by continent and then by country, and suggested activities accompany the titles, encouraging students to interpret information related to historical or geographic concepts and use problem-solving skills. Activities range from those appropriate for beginners to experienced researchers/writers. All call for high-level thinking and most provide opportunities to respond in creative ways. In addition, all of the activities are keyed to selected national standards in language arts and social studies. The picture books suggested are not only excellent choices to capture a booktalk audience's attention and educate young readers about world culture, but also to demonstrate how human beings have adapted to the various environments of the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new reading of Virginia Woolf in the context of “long modernism.” In recent decades, Virginia Woolf’s contribution to literary history has been located primarily within a female tradition. Elizabeth Abel dislodges Woolf from her iconic place within this tradition to uncover her shadowy presence in other literary genealogies. Abel elicits unexpected echoes of Woolf in four major writers from diverse cultural contexts: Nella Larsen, James Baldwin, Roland Barthes, and W. G. Sebald. By mapping the wayward paths of what Woolf called “odd affinities” that traverse the boundaries of gender, race, and nationality, Abel offers a new account of the arc of Woolf’s career and the transnational modernist genealogy constituted by her elusive and shifting presence. Odd Affinities will appeal to students and scholars working in New Modernist studies, comparative literature, gender and sexuality studies, and African American studies.

Book excerpt: In this fourth and final entry in the Jon Mote Mysteries, our accidental sleuth and his sister Judy find themselves entangled in an international web of evil done and evil revenged. The often confused but always curious Jon finds himself the father of triplets and, for reasons not always clear even to himself, back in church. Judy, a woman with mental challenges but a heart as wide as the horizon, is now living with Jon and wife Zillah, helping them raise “our children.” New to church, but somehow appointed to the Missions Committee (soon renamed the Care and Compassion Committee), Jon is asked to be the liaison with an immigrant family from Iraq the church wishes to aid. No one realizes that offering such help puts everyone in jeopardy, as evil done afar comes near to roost. The cast of characters from past novels in the series reappears, including the band of residents from Judy’s group home and the iron-willed theologian Sister Brigit. All are involved in this dramatic investigation into the nature of evil in the human experience and all contribute to Jon’s stumbling but dogged pilgrimage toward greater wholeness.

Book A Sense of Place My Life and Times on Roaring Creek

Download or read book A Sense of Place My Life and Times on Roaring Creek written by Chris R. Hughes and published by BookLocker.com, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-09-30 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagine a place in the 21st Century that has remained only moderately fazed by the passing of time. In the heart of North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains, such a place actually exists! A Sense of Place: My Life and Times on Roaring Creek explores the author’s connectedness to a fairly remote Southern Appalachian Highlands community called Roaring Creek. The people and customs of the Roaring Creek Valley have always, and are still considered by many as being unique, even among fellow Avery Countians. Vacillating between the sublime, the ordinary, and the downright ridiculous, this work both embraces and celebrates that uniqueness. A Sense of Place: My Life and Times on Roaring Creek is a coming-of-age memoir. The book touches on such varied themes as history, family dynamics, geography, dialect, food, customs, demographics, and religion. Woven throughout the book is an obvious thread of contemplative, Christian spirituality. Parts of the book will move the reader to tears, some parts out-loud laughter, but hopefully all parts will spur personal reflection. The book both begins and ends on a passionate note of personal reflections. Even those sections of the book that are written in heavier tones, always conclude on positive, inspirational, major keys. A Sense of Place consists of seventeen chapters, with a total page count of 172. Six representative chapter titles are: No Home Like Place; Thicker Than Water; And That's the Way We Were; That Roaring Creek Brogue; Gravy is My Favorite Beverage; The Face of the Deep. In his stories, reflective essays, and brief historical summaries, the author illustrates how cultural context exerts such a powerful, impelling influence on all. He offers head-on critiques of his perspectives and life experiences that gave shape to his own story. It is the author’s intention for his audience to understand the uniqueness of life in the Southern Appalachian Highlands, and how that uniqueness came about in the first place. Sharing some important stretches of his journey, the author anticipates that the readers may gain a better understanding of their own journey.
