Download or read book Zoo Studies written by Tracy McDonald and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2019-06-19 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do both the zoo and the mental hospital induce psychosis, as humans are treated as animals and animals are treated as humans? How have we looked at animals in the past, and how do we look at them today? How have zoos presented themselves, and their purpose, over time? In response to the emergence of environmental and animal studies, anthropologists, sociologists, philosophers, theorists, literature scholars, and historians around the world have begun to explore the significance of zoological parks, past and present. Zoo Studies considers the modern zoo from a range of approaches and disciplines, united in a desire to blur the boundaries between human and nonhuman animals. The volume begins with an account of the first modern mental hospital, La Salpêtrière, established in 1656, and the first panoptical zoo, the menagerie at Versailles, created in 1662 by the same royal architect; the final chapter presents a choreographic performance that imagines the Toronto Zoo as a place where the human body can be inspired by animal bodies. From beginning to end, through interdisciplinary collaboration, this volume decentres the human subject and offers alternative ways of thinking about zoos and their inhabitants. This collection immerses readers in the lives of animals and their experiences of captivity and asks us to reflect on our own assumptions about both humans and animals. An original and groundbreaking work, Zoo Studies will change the way readers see nonhuman animals and themselves.

Book excerpt: While a fantastic cause, can the task of protecting animal rights and habitats also be fun? The answer for Spanish photographer Yago Partal is "yes!" as he joyfully embraces important environmental activism with his form of inventive entertainment. His aim is to increase our awareness of animals who need protection - from the Amur leopard to the plains zebra - with his Zoo Portraits project, which launched in 2013. The project presents animals in anthropomorphized form, wearing clothing and accessories that echo the animal's temperament and preferred habitat. It is not Partal's intention to create distance or make light of the animals, but rather to make people think and nudge them to get involved in protect- ing animals via pictures, education, and awareness. Mission accomplished: Yago Partal's wonderful animal portraits have found a huge audience, with media like CBS and the Daily Mail reporting enthusiastically on the phenomenon. Beautiful, functional products including iPhone cases and even clothes hangers are available for purchase under the Zoo Portraits label. Ten percent of all proceeds are donated to animal welfare organisations. The book has the same objective: to make people smile as well as inform them. In addition to the unique pictures, there is information on each animal's habitat, size, and population as well as interesting and surprising facts. Presented in a clear and attractive format, this book is equally exciting for children and adults. AUTHOR: Yago Partal studied visual arts at the University of Barcelona. One of his creative projects gave him the inspiration for Zoo Portraits. With his enthusiasm for animals, cartoons, and fashion, he began experimenting with the popular anthropomorphisation of animals; the result was a cosmos of unique artworks. Yago Partal's work has been the subject of shows in Barcelona, London, Montreal, and Tokyo. His customers include world-renowned companies such as Apple and Body Shop. SELLING POINTS: * A creative animal atlas - new, unexpected, educational * Unique portraits of both familiar and less-known species as you've never seen them before * Lots of fun for everyone interested in animals and anyone who wants to join the movement to help protect them 70 colour photographs

Download or read book Photographic Realism written by Kieran Cashell and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-10-15 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most captivating and provocative artists of the Sensation generation, Richard Billingham (b. 1970) came to prominence in the late 1990s with his visceral photobook Ray's a Laugh, a slice of everyday life in a high-rise sink estate in the British West Midlands. This book is the first comprehensive discussion of Billingham's art practice. Articulating the socio-historical, aesthetic, geographical as well as anthropological aspects of Billingham's art, the book situates his work within the British neorealist tradition in visual art, cinema and televisual culture. Beginning with the first photographic studies of his father in the early 1990s, Cashell argues that these sympathetic, haunting images prefigure the later development of his thematic concerns. Significant consideration is also given to Billingham's cinematic oeuvre, including his recent feature-length autobiographical film, Ray & Liz, which substantially clarifies the complex continuity of his developing aesthetic vision. Illustrated throughout with colour and black and white reproductions, Photographic Realism: The Art of Richard Billingham combines investigative research with interviews and studio conversations, providing a subtle and sophisticated critical evaluation of the artist's key photographic and film-based works from the 1990s to the present.

The Zoo and Screen Media: Images of Exhibition and Encounter provides a new map of twentieth-century human-animal relations by exploring how the zoo, that modern apparatus for presenting living animals to human audiences, has itself been represented across a diverse range of moving image media.

Book Out of the Wild

Download or read book Out of the Wild written by and published by Glitterati. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photographer Boza Ivanovic artfully transforms the traditional animal-visitor dynamic in Out of the Wild. These animals are at once as terrifying as they are hauntingly beautiful. - Special interest for environmentalists, conservationists, animal enthusiasts, and photography fans; Ivanovic has worked for numerous publications, such as National Geographic. Zoos work to preserve nature, protecting animals from the encroaching human presence in their native environments. Cages and glass - these barriers exist to protect both the animals and the visitors. Photographer Boza Ivanovic, however, artfully transforms this dynamic in his latest book, Out of the Wild: Zoo Portraits. His photographs pull viewers past protective boundaries, reinstating a sensation of awe and even fear. Here, zoo animals appear as they do in nature - without the perceived safety of barriers. As a result of his careful presentation, Ivanovic inspires a tension in his viewers. These animals are at once as terrifying as they are hauntingly beautiful. They emerge from the darkness or swoop gracefully toward the lens. Ivanovic's carefully crafted images restore the majesty of these creatures, revealing that there is still a wild spirit in these animals' hearts - whether in the wild or out.
