Numerous critics of globalisation, transnationalism and cosmopolitanism have posited an overwhelming feeling of homelessness not only among people who have been displaced from their original home/lands, but also among those who feel estranged from their places of origin due to rapid social change or environmental decline. Arguably, homesickness is prevalent in today’s developed world, and can be – and sometimes indeed is – felt even for times and places unrelated to someone’s personal roots. Memory has been mobilised to justify recent conflicts, to question mainstream interpretations of past events, or to demand compensation for the suffering of earlier generations. Nostalgia has been employed as a “utopia in reverse”, revealing more about our unattainable “ideal present”, than about the elusive “lost” past it invokes. A corollary of nostalgia in the late modern politics of loss, melancholy has been a way of dis-identifying from both the horrors of recent history, and the growing insecurities of the present. The volume raises complex questions related to the ways people have coped with displacement and time-space compression, arguably the two most manifest symptoms of late modernity. How do we grapple with the traumatic experience of the loss of home? What strategies do we use, and what is their underlying politics? How do they intersect with identity positions, such as gender, class and sexuality? How might they contribute to the preservation of national cultures? How has our understanding of home changed in a time of mobility and flow? Spanning multiple Eurasian and Northern American cultural contexts, the book is of interest to an international academic readership within the fields of cultural studies, memory studies, gender studies, literature, art, performance, film and media studies.

Nevertheless, "Remembering Yesterday," talks about a timid little immigrant boy named Gregorio; his wonderful protective mother; his working, dedicated, and honest father, who was forced to immigrate to six different countries before coming to America, looking for work so his family could survive; and his two siblings: Andrea, the daring one; and Matteo, the thick headed one. The book opens up with the main character Gregorio Di Nardo as an adult teaching English as a Second Language at a local Community College, to immigrant adult students. the author then moves to narrate more about the main character as a little boy growing up in his little village. The story continues with some surprising and unexpected information: Gregorio and his family would be leaving their little town for America. The news upsets the little boy for abandoning his present existence, his friends, the piazza, and his small house; but his mother and siblings however, were happy as they could be to leave the poor conditions behind and embrace new ones knowing they were starting from nothing. The narration picks up with a long dangerous journey to America: first on a train, then on transatlantic boat named "Vulcania", and finally growing up to adulthood in the city of Newark with no language, no friends, no one to cling to except his parents and two siblings. The family settles in the city of Newark, where they lived and experienced Newark reality at its best and safest period; as well as its downfall. It is here where they first experienced one of the many gloomy embarrassments, despondent, sour moments of racism and hardships. The desperate souls came with nothing except their clothes, a strong will to work and produce; and to overcome the hunger they left behind due to poor economic conditions they were subjected to.

Traversing Turkana’s constituent livelihoods and examining the historical relationships between them in relation to shifting economic, ecological and political factors, the book asks what perspective emerges from an in-depth understanding of the everyday things that have taken part in processes of substantial socio-cultural transformation. By setting out a series of new examples established through long-term research in the region, it offers a characterisation of Turkana’s iterative transformation as the articulation of a set of long-term continuities. Investigating quotidian personal and community histories, it argues that Turkana’s complex network of livelihood interactions has, on the whole, strengthened over time through its continual reformulation, as identities, livelihood practices and social institutions have been re-imagined and reshaped with each new generation in order to reconstruct accumulated memory and knowledges. Remembering Turkana provides a wide-ranging socio-historical overview of the Turkana region and people, situating critical contemporary issues within diverse bodies of literature.
