Book excerpt: Zipporah, the wife of the lawgiver Moses and daughter of Jethro, the Priest of Midian, tells her father's story. From humble origins, Jethro becomes an apprentice to Ahaz, a priest of Baal and member of the diplomatic council of Jericho, a small kingdom pressed by the Midianites on the east and the Philistines on the west. As a priest, Jethro rises to great prominence: a military leader, emissary between the people and the gods, and counsel to the king. A leader in battle, Jethro humiliates his foes, and in diplomacy, he forms a bond with the Kingdoms of Bethel and Hebron. His love for Elizabeth, Ahaz's daughter, brings him great happiness but he can never win the approval of his father who resembles the tyrannical Baal, the god he has sworn to serve. Jethro's struggle to discover the true religion plunges him from the heights of power but wins him freedom and peace. Contains graphic descriptions of pagan fertility rites.

Book Midrash VaYosha

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rachel S. Mikva
  • Publisher : Mohr Siebeck
  • Release : 2012
  • ISBN : 9783161510090
  • Pages : 382 pages

Download or read book Midrash VaYosha written by Rachel S. Mikva and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2012 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rachel S. Mikva undertakes a close examination of Midrash vaYosha, a medieval rabbinic text which explicates the Song at the Sea (Ex 15:1-18) and the events of the exodus from Egypt leading up to that climactic moment. Relatively short midrashim focusing on a brief biblical narrative or theme were composed in large numbers during the medieval period, and their extant manuscripts are sufficient in number to demonstrate the great popularity of the genre. Based on early manuscripts, two different recensions are transcribed and translated with significant annotation exploring variants, parallels, exegetical significance and literary style. A thorough historical analysis suggests that the midrash was performed as explication of the Torah reading at a certain point in its development - part of the gradual attenuation of live Targum. As Midrash vaYosha leaves the synagogue, its narrative dimension grows tremendously, yielding significant insight into the development of medieval Jewish exegesis.

Book Zipporah Wife of Moses

Download or read book Zipporah Wife of Moses written by Marek Halter and published by Crown. This book was released on 2005-07-05 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the internationally bestselling author of Sarah comes the riveting story of the remarkable woman who walked beside Moses. Although she is a Cushite by birth—one of the people of the lands to the south—Zipporah grew up as the beloved daughter of Jethro, high priest and sage of the Midianites. But the color of Zipporah’s skin sets her apart, making her an outsider to the men of her adopted tribe, who do not want her as a wife. Then one day while drawing water from a well, she meets a handsome young stranger. Like her, he is an outsider. A Hebrew raised in the house of the Egyptian Pharaoh, Moses is a fugitive, forced to flee his homeland. Zipporah realizes that this man will be the husband and partner she never thought she would have. Moses wants nothing more than a peaceful life with the Midianites, but Zipporah won’t let Moses forget his past—or turn away from his true destiny. She refuses to marry him until he returns to Egypt to free his people. When God reveals himself to Moses in a burning bush, his words echo Zipporah’s, and Moses returns to Egypt with his passionate and generous wife by his side. A woman ahead of her time, Zipporah leaps from the pages of this remarkable novel. Bold, independent, and a true survivor, she is a captivating heroine, and her world of deserts, temples, and ancient wonders is a fitting backdrop to an epic tale.
