Book excerpt: Why is the topic of religion so contentious? Since childhood, everywhere he goes, Chacko sees a “clash of heavens” between people of different religions. He was brought up in the Christian Mar Thoma Church in a small village in India in the 1940s and has practised Christianity throughout his life. However, as he travels around the world, from India to Canada via Ghana, and witnesses political transitions and coups, acts of terrorism and war, and learns more about various religions, he is drawn into deep discussions with friends about belief, the Bible, and God. Was Jesus really a historical figure? Why are there different versions of the creation story? How does Darwin’s Theory of Evolution fit in? Why is God referred to as “Father,” and not “Mother” or “Sister”? Who is God? Along his journey of discovery and truth, Chacko meets “angels” from all walks of life who contribute to his outlook on humanity—but also bring him to question himself even more. Will his quest ever end? The Clash of Heavens: A Journey of Discovery with Angels explores the spiritual conflicts that can both disconnect and connect us from each other, the courage it takes to question the beliefs you’ve been taught in order to find your own truth, and how religion has shaped the world, from practices and folklore to beliefs and actions.

Book Creating a Green and Cultural Economy

Download or read book Creating a Green and Cultural Economy written by Ram Ramprasad and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique book that takes the reader into the depths and mysteries of creating a wondrous people-initiated economic plan grounded in centuries of cultural and ecological wisdom. In a tapestry of factual and everyday events, the author makes a well-reasoned argument that we first need to address culture, then a sustainable lifestyle, then ecology, and finally economics. The author strongly reasons that this paradigm in the current century has been reversed by all the countries of the world. The authors compelling argument makes the reader ask some thought-provoking questions: Is our present state of affairs increasing costs in all areas of the economy? Is our system of education placing a distorted emphasis in creating an army of misplaced problem solvers? Is this the right approach? What is cultural economy? Is a culture-based economy better than a consumer economy? The adventure-filled story telling in this book is a blend of the ancient wisdom of the East with suggestions to using the right sources of practical technological wisdom from the East and the West. It takes the current state of our affairs and economic planning and simply turns the current logic on its head. The reader finds several clues on how to implement and create a people-initiated economic plan without necessarily changing his or her current station in life. The beauty of the book is that any person can help create a technological culture that is aligned with nature and ecology. A scholarly book that offers a fascinating reading, as pleasant as reading a novel.

Download or read book Why I Write written by Aakar Patel and published by Penguin Random House India Private Limited. This book was released on 2023-03-06 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the greatest raconteurs of 20th century, Saadat Hasan Manto declared that he was forced to write when his wife routinely demanded that he put bread on the table for the family. He didn't attribute any genius to his skills as a writer and convinced his readers that the stories flowed even as he minded his daughters or tossed a salad. Equally, Manto treated his tryst with Bollywood with disdain and unmasked the cardboard lives of tinsel town when a horse was painted to double up for a zebra or multiple fans rotate to create a deluge. In these essays, two of Manto's favourite and recurring themes-women and Partition-find special mention as he brings to focus the bizarre morality in the context of feminine beauty and the futile presence of religiosity in the creation of a nation he was to adopt later in life. For the first time ever, this unique collection of nonfiction writing from the subcontinent's greatest writer, translated by well known author and journalist, Aakar Patel, showcases Saadat Hasan Manto's brilliance while dealing with life's most mundane things-graveyards, bumming cigarettes, a film crew with motley characters from mythology and a sharp dissection of what ails the subcontinent even after six decades, Hindi or Urdu, vile politicians and the hopelessness of living under the shadow of fear.

Through a selection of prose and poetry – The direct outcome of this horrific event and an introduction that traces the history of events leading to the massacre – Rakhshanda Jalil, a literary historian and translator from Urdu and Hindi, attempts to open a window into the world of possibilities that literature offers to reflect, interpret and analyse events of momentous historical import. The selection offers ways of ‘seeing’ history, of exploring how an incident that stirred the conscience of millions, one that had far-reaching implications for the National freedom struggle and British rule, found its way through pen and Paper to reach the nooks and crannies of popular imagination filtered through the mind of the creative writer. The stalwarts and acknowledged doyens of Indian literature featured in this volume include Saadat Hasan Manto, Mulk Raj Anand, Krishna Chander, Abdullah Hussein, Bhisham Sahni, Ghulam Abbas, subadhra Kumari Chauhan, Sarojini Naidu, sohan Singh Misha, Muhammad Iqbal, Josh malihabadi, Nanak Singh, to name a few. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Indian film music book is a collection of eighty essays about the people who made remarkable music in Bollywood cinema, especially during the great era, and the ideas such people brought to the recording studios. When songs had to go without rhythms or when melodies had plenty of Q n A in them. In this music book, we flirt with Rock n Roll and scan songs that speed up at the end, we peep behind the screen to see what the idea was behind chorus songs in our films – even if there was no one to sing that chorus on the screen; it’s a huge list. These pages are a reflection of the time when everyone was fired up in their art, and when no one wanted to finish last in the race. It is about artists who every now and then dreamt ideas, and only after crystallizing things perfectly in their mind’s eye, went out to translate and transform their dreams into unforgettable melodies in Indian movies. Jukebox will interest the layman as well as the academician.
