Book Soil Mineral Stresses

Download or read book Soil Mineral Stresses written by Anthony R. Yeo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with the ways in which crops might be developed, or improved, for soils that are agriculturally unproductive because of excesses- high salinity and metal toxicity - and/or deficiencies of certain minerals. The aim is that those working to derive crops for growth on these problem soils should be aware of the many diverse avenues that areavailable. The methods discussed are conventional breeding, selection based on knowledge of the physiological basis of tolerance, the use of cell culture and cytogenetics, and the exploitation of native flora.

Book Rice

Download or read book Rice written by Bor S. Luh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 853 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rice is one of the principal cereals used by the world's inhabitants. The hope for improved nourishment of the world's population depends on the development of better rice varieties and improved methods for rice production and utilization. During the past four decades, interest in rice research and production has increased in many countries. The development of new and better varieties by the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines and other rice research institutes has stimulated numerous research stations to test the performance of these varieties in many countries under different climates, soil properties, cultural practices, and environmental conditions. The methods of harvesting, handling, drying, and milling rough rice have improved as a result of research efforts by the engineers and the rice milling industries. The first edition of Rice: Production and Utilization was published in 1980. This second edition presents the recent developments and progress made by the researchers, the industries, and various experiment stations. Because of the large amounts of literature available in recent years on rice production and utilization, this edition is divided into two volumes, Volume 1: Production and Volume II: Utilization. It is hoped that the books will be useful to rice researchers, processors, and people interested in rice production and utilization. Those studying v vi PREFACE the agronomy of rice plants, especially the genetics, breeding, cultivation, diseases, and insects that attack both the rice plant and the stored grain, will find this edition helpful in their search for new knowledge.

Book Soil Amendments and Environmental Quality

Download or read book Soil Amendments and Environmental Quality written by Jack E. Rechcigl and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1995-09-25 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive and balanced overview of soil amendments and their effect on the environment. It encompasses both positive and negative aspects of chemical fertilizers that supply nitrogen, phosphorous, sulfur, lime, micronutrients, and trace metals. Pros and cons are discussed with respect to the optimal and the most environmentally sound use of soil amendments, and guidance is provided on how to minimize the environmental effects of amendments. Natural fertilizers, including manure, sludge, fly ash, phosphogypsum, and byproduct gypsum are also discussed. Alternative agronomic practices and biotechnology that ameliorate or minimize potential adverse effects of fertilizer use are examined in detail. This authoritative and up-to-date treatise is multidisciplinary in nature and international in scope, a powerful reference tool for researchers, a thorough guide for practitioners and policy makers, and an excellent text book for academic courses.

Book Microbial Biofertilizers and Micronutrient Availability

Download or read book Microbial Biofertilizers and Micronutrient Availability written by Shams Tabrez, Khan and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-12-06 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses various issues related to micronutrient deficiency, especially zinc, and discusses the possible approaches for combating mineral deficiency among humans and plants. The book mainly focuses on the zinc biofortification of vegetable and cereal crops and highlights the consequences of zinc deficiency and the health risks associated with zinc deficiency, especially in children and expecting mothers. The authors discuss different types of food that are rich in zinc and other minerals, how diets can be designed to meet the daily zinc requirements, and the impact of zinc deficiency on plant health and quality of agricultural products and the role of micronutrients in abiotic stress tolerance. The book also covers sustainable approaches to zinc biofortification in crops, such as the microbial solubilization of zinc in soil to improve zinc uptake by plants, and the formulation of these microbes into biofertilizers. The book will be of interest to dieticians, agricultural scientists, students and microbiologists.

Book Proceedings of Symposium on Paddy Soils

Download or read book Proceedings of Symposium on Paddy Soils written by Institute of Soil Science, Academia Sinica and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 876 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China contributes a large part to rice production, one of the most important crops in the world. It is estimated that in China rice constitutes about half of the total food production, covering an area of about 30 % of \08 hectares of cultivated land of the whole country. Owing to the peculiar water regime, paddy soils possess quite different properties physically, chemically and biologically as compared with those of upland soils. Such properties have a conspicuous effect on fertility and management practice of paddy field. For the purpose of summing up the past work and opening up new prospects, a "Symposium on Paddy Soils" was organized under the auspices of Academia Sinica, held on October 19-24, 1980 in Nanjing, which was followed by a seven-day paddy soil excursion in the lower Changjiang Delta. In addition to 120 Chinese soil scientists, 56 guests coming from America, Asia, Europe and Oceania attended the symposium on invitation. A total of 110 papers were presented either orally or by poster. All these are collected and published in the present proceedings which we hope may be helpful to the scientific exchanges between soil scientists of China and other countries.
